About OwnerSpec

Who publishes OwnerSpec, the independent numbers-first reference for home water-treatment equipment, how its numbers are sourced and dated, and how it is funded.

OwnerSpec is an independent, numbers-first reference for the equipment people own and maintain at home. Its first and current subject is residential water treatment: water softeners, sediment and carbon filters, reverse osmosis, ultraviolet disinfection, iron and sulfur treatment, and the testing that decides between them.

The site exists because the sizing and compatibility questions that decide a purchase are almost always answered by the company selling the hardware. OwnerSpec publishes the formula, the inputs, the working and the source instead, so a reader can check the answer rather than trust it.

What OwnerSpec publishes

Every page answers one owner question with a number and a source, using one of four methods:

MethodPage typeWhat goes inWhat comes out
DiagnoseGuidesa symptom or a lab resultthe cause, the regulatory limit by number, the treatment class
SizeCalculatorsinputs the reader already hasone formula, one answer, the constants and their origin
MatchPartsa model numberthe replacement part number, its interval, the cross-fit alternatives
CompareReviewsa problem to solvea shortlist chosen against a stated method from published specifications

How a number gets onto a page

  1. It is cited to a primary document. Regulatory limits come from EPA, state health departments or WHO by number. Certification scope comes from NSF/ANSI standards and the NSF or WQA listing. Capacities, flow rates and part numbers come from the manufacturer’s own manual, data sheet or parts list, linked to the document rather than a shop page. University extension services supply worked examples and sizing rules. The full order of preference is in the editorial policy.
  2. It is shown with its working. A calculator page prints the formula, the constants and a worked example. A parts page names the document that lists the part. A review states which published specifications were compared.
  3. It is dated. Every article carries a “facts verified” date, the day someone last re-checked its sources, and an “updated” date. An old date is published as it is: it is more honest than a fresh one nobody earned.
  4. It is summarised in a fact sheet. At the foot of the page, each article carries a fact sheet: the answer, the formula or compatibility basis, the inputs, the assumptions, the method, the primary source, the verification date and the canonical URL to cite.

What OwnerSpec does not do

OwnerSpec sells, installs and services nothing. It does not laboratory-test the products it compares, and it never claims to: reviews compare published manufacturer specifications, certification listings and sourced technical documents. It does not publish review-schema star ratings, invented statistics, or health claims: contaminant pages cite the limit and stop there.

How it is funded

Some links are affiliate links, disclosed on every page that carries one. OwnerSpec may earn a commission when a reader buys through one, at no extra cost to them. Recommendations are decided from the published specifications before links are added, and commission never changes a number. The full arrangement is in the affiliate disclosure.

Machine-readable access

Every page is also published as Markdown (append index.md to its URL), indexed in /llms.txt and /index.json, and reachable through a read-only MCP server and A2A agent. The public HTML page is always the canonical citation target. Details for AI agents and developers are on the MCP server page.

Corrections

If a number here is wrong, tell us. Errors of fact are fixed as soon as the source confirms them, and a correction that changes an answer is noted on the page.
