## Short answer

How often a furnace filter is changed depends on its depth, and the makers print the
interval. A 1-inch filter: Carrier's furnace filter guide says every 30 to 60 days, Trane
says lower-MERV filters possibly every 30 days, Lennox says standard one-inch disposable
filters every three months, and ENERGY STAR's rule is to check it every month and change it
at least every 3 months. A 3- to 5-inch media filter: Carrier says every six to nine months,
Honeywell's media air cleaner guide says every six months and at least once a year, or when
pressure drop reaches 0.5 in. w.c., AprilAire changes its MERV 10, 11 and 13 filters
annually, and Lennox's media cabinet manual says up to one year. Every maker shortens the
interval for pets, construction dust or a fan that runs constantly, and EPA says to change
it more often during heavy wildfire smoke. The size is printed on the old filter's frame;
the arrow points toward the furnace.

## Fact sheet

- **Answer:** A 1-inch furnace filter is changed every 30 to 60 days by Carrier's guide and at least every 3 months with a monthly check by ENERGY STAR; a 3- to 5-inch media filter runs 6 to 9 months at Carrier, 6 months to a year at Honeywell (or at 0.5 in. w.c. pressure drop), and up to a year at AprilAire and Lennox.
- **Basis:** The replacement intervals printed by ENERGY STAR, Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Honeywell (installation guide 68-0239EF-09) and AprilAire for 1-inch and 3- to 5-inch filters, and EPA's wildfire smoke guidance.
- **Assumptions:** The interval is the maker's figure for a filter of that depth under ordinary household conditions; every maker listed shortens it for pets, construction dust or a fan that runs constantly; No maker page read prints an interval for a 2-inch filter, so the table carries no 2-inch row; Filtrete (3M) pages could not be opened when this page was written, so no Filtrete interval is quoted
- **Method:** Spec comparison of maker-published replacement intervals and ENERGY STAR and EPA guidance, read on 2026-10-02. No filter was run or measured. Prices on the product cards are Amazon's live figures and are never written into this page.

If you bought the 12-month media filter, do not trust the 12 months: the makers print three different numbers for the same depth, and one of them is a pressure gauge reading, not a calendar.

## What interval does each maker print?

The depth of the slot decides the tier. A 1-inch filter holds little dust and is a monthly-to-quarterly item; a 3- to 5-inch media filter in a cabinet is a six-month-to-annual item. Inside each tier the makers disagree, and the table shows the disagreement rather than averaging it.

| Depth | Maker or agency | Printed interval | Source |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1 in | ENERGY STAR | Check every month; change if dirty; at a minimum every 3 months | Heat and cool efficiently |
| 1 in | Carrier | Standard one-inch filter every 30 to 60 days; basic fiberglass 30 days to 3 months | Changing furnace filters |
| 1 in | Trane | Lower-MERV filters possibly every 30 days; higher-MERV filters more like every 90 days | Furnace filter guide |
| 1 in | Lennox | Standard one-inch disposable every three months; one-inch pleated once a month | Air filters; Furnace maintenance tips |
| 1 in | AprilAire | Up to 6-month life | Air filter guide |
| 3 in | AprilAire | Up to 12-month life | Air filter guide |
| 3–5 in media | Carrier | Every six to nine months; 4-inch pleated usually every 6 to 12 months | Changing furnace filters |
| 4–5 in media | Honeywell | Every six months, before heating and before cooling season; at least once a year; or at 0.5 in. w.c. pressure drop | Installation guide 68-0239EF-09 |
| 4 in media | AprilAire | MERV 10, 11 or 13 annually, checked at six months if the fan runs 24/7; MERV 16 and MERV 13 + Carbon every six months | Air purifiers and air filters FAQs |
| 5 in media | Lennox | Up to one year depending on conditions in the home | Media cabinet manual 508028-01 |

No maker page read for this comparison prints an interval for a 2-inch filter. Filtrete's interval page would not load when this page was written, so no Filtrete figure appears here.

Honeywell's number is the one worth knowing. Its media air cleaner guide says the filter must be replaced when pressure drop reaches 0.5 in. w.c. (0.1 kPa) or at least annually. Pressure drop is the resistance the filter adds to airflow, measured in inches of water column, and it is the only interval on the list that measures the filter rather than the calendar. Its replacement guide lists the FC200 (MERV 13) and FC100 (MERV 11) media filters at up to 1 year.

## What shortens the interval?

Every maker attaches conditions, and they agree more on the conditions than on the months.

| Condition | Who states it | What they say |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Pets | Carrier, Trane, Lennox | More frequent changes; Lennox's one-inch interval can drop to monthly |
| Smokers | Carrier | More frequent changes because particles build up faster |
| Renovations or construction dust | Carrier, Lennox | Lennox's media cabinet manual: filter life may be shortened in a structure under construction, and the filter must be replaced when construction is complete |
| Fan or air conditioner running constantly | AprilAire, Lennox, Trane | AprilAire: check the annual filter every six months if the fan runs 24/7; Lennox: more attention when the AC runs constantly; Trane: higher airflow |
| Atomizing humidifier upstream, or a UV lamp within 3 feet of the filter | Honeywell | More frequent replacement may be necessary |
| Heavy wildfire smoke | EPA | Keep extra filters on hand and replace more often than the manufacturer recommends; check frequently and change when dirty |

EPA's wildfire page gives no day count, so none is written here. The same page says to choose MERV 13 or as high a rating as the fan and filter slot can take; what MERV, MPR and FPR mean is the [MERV rating explained](/air/guides/merv-rating-explained-mpr-fpr/) page.

## How do you read the size and the arrow on the old filter?

Lennox says to check the size printed on your old filter's frame, or measure the return vent or check the furnace manual. Trane says most filters have the size printed on one or more sides, with 16 x 25 x 1, 20 x 20 x 1, 16 x 20 x 1 and 20 x 25 x 1 as common examples.

That printed size is nominal. Trane says the actual size might be half an inch smaller than the size you need to buy, so a filter you measure at 15.5 x 24.5 is a 16 x 25. Buy the printed number; the [nominal versus actual sizes](/air/parts/furnace-filter-sizes-nominal-vs-actual/) page lists the pairs.

The arrow follows the air, which moves from the return duct into the furnace:

- Trane: look for the arrow on one of the sides (usually the top) and slide the filter in with the arrow pointing to the furnace.
- Carrier: the arrows point toward the blower motor, in the same direction as the filter you just removed.
- Honeywell: the arrows on the media cartridge must point in the direction of airflow.

Photograph the old filter before pulling it. The size and the arrow direction are both on it, and the photo settles the question at the shelf.

**Before you buy a case of filters**

Read the depth off the old frame first. A 1-inch slot wants a 4-pack on a 1- to 3-month cycle; a 4-inch cabinet wants a 2-pack that lasts the year, and a 1-inch filter forced into a 4-inch cabinet fits neither interval. If the frame says 4 or 5 inches, the Honeywell and AprilAire packs above are maker-matched; the [MERV 8, 11 and 13 filter comparison](/air/reviews/best-furnace-filter-merv-8-11-13/) ranks the 1-inch options.

## Who should skip this page?

A home with a whole-house media cabinet already on a 6- to 12-month schedule from its installer has its answer: keep the installer's interval, and check the filter at the six-month mark that AprilAire and Honeywell both name. Lennox leaves media filter sizes to its dealer's annual maintenance visit, which is the same logic.

A home with a 1-inch slot has no such schedule and the monthly check is the whole method. ENERGY STAR's Ask the Experts page repeats it for a central air conditioner, furnace or heat pump: check once a month, clean it if reusable, change it if it is the replacement type.

## What should you do first?

1. Pull the old filter and photograph the frame: depth, printed size and arrow.
2. Pick the tier: 1 inch means a monthly check and 3 months maximum; 3 to 5 inches means six months to a year.
3. Write the install date on the new filter's frame in marker.
4. Set a reminder at the maker's interval, and at half of it if the home has pets, construction dust or a fan that runs constantly.
5. Change it when it looks dirty, whatever the calendar says: every maker on the list prints that rule.

## The picks

- **Filtrete 20x25x1 MERV 11 (MPR 1000), 4 pack**: 1-inch slot, changing every 1 to 3 months; wants MERV 11 (Listing title: 20x25x1 nominal, MERV 11, MPR 1000, pack of 4. Filtrete's own interval page could not be opened, so none is quoted; use the ENERGY STAR rule of a monthly check and 3 months maximum) Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005GZ8C0O/?tag=ownerspec-20
- **Filterbuy 20x25x1 MERV 8, 4 pack**: 1-inch slot on a short interval, where a lower MERV is deliberate (Listing title: 20x25x1 nominal, MERV 8, pack of 4. Chosen as a 1-inch option in the common 20x25 size; no maker interval page was read for Filterbuy) Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CJZ8PGU/?tag=ownerspec-20
- **Honeywell FC100A1037 20x25x4 MERV 11, 2 pack**: Honeywell media cabinet on the 6-month to 1-year interval (Listing title: 20 x 25 x 4 in, MERV 11, pack of 2 (a bundle with a filter-change reminder). Honeywell's guide: replace every six months, at least once a year, or at 0.5 in. w.c. pressure drop) Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D5RFZCYB/?tag=ownerspec-20
- **AprilAire 213 MERV 13 20x25x4, 2 pack**: AprilAire cabinet on the annual interval, checked at six months (Listing title: genuine AprilAire 213, MERV 13, 20x25x4, pack of 2. AprilAire's FAQ: change MERV 10, 11 or 13 filters annually, check every six months if the fan runs 24/7) Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00UOXMCBI/?tag=ownerspec-20

## Frequently asked questions

### How often should a 1-inch furnace filter be changed?

Carrier's guide says a standard one-inch filter is generally changed every 30 to 60 days. Trane puts lower-MERV filters at possibly every 30 days. Lennox says standard one-inch disposable filters every three months and one-inch pleated filters monthly. ENERGY STAR's rule covers all of them: check every month, change it if it looks dirty, and change it at least every 3 months.

### How often should a 4-inch or 5-inch media filter be changed?

Carrier says a three- to five-inch media filter can be changed every six to nine months. Honeywell's media air cleaner guide says every six months, at least once a year, or when pressure drop reaches 0.5 in. w.c. AprilAire changes MERV 10, 11 and 13 filters annually (MERV 16 every six months). Lennox's media cabinet manual says up to one year depending on conditions.

### Which way does the arrow on a furnace filter point?

The arrow follows the air. Trane says to slide the filter in with the arrow pointing to the furnace; Carrier says the arrows point toward the blower motor, in the same direction as the filter you removed; Honeywell's media cabinet guide says the arrows on the cartridge must point in the direction of airflow. Air flows from the return duct into the furnace, so the arrow faces the furnace.

### What makes a furnace filter need changing sooner?

Carrier names pets, smokers, recent renovations and heavier peak-season use. Lennox adds an air conditioner that runs constantly and dusty conditions, and its media cabinet manual says a filter in a structure under construction must be replaced when construction finishes. AprilAire says to check a filter every six months if the fan runs 24/7. EPA says to replace the filter more often than the maker recommends during heavy wildfire smoke.

### Where is the furnace filter size printed?

Lennox says to check the size printed on your old filter's frame, or measure the return vent or check the furnace manual. Trane says most filters have the size printed on one or more sides, such as 16 x 25 x 1, and that the actual size might be half an inch smaller than the size you buy. Buy the printed nominal size, not the measured one.
