How often to replace an air purifier filter: the HEPA, carbon and pre-filter intervals Levoit, Coway, Winix, Blueair, Honeywell and Shark print, and which filter lights measure anything
Levoit Core 300 every 6 to 8 months, Coway and Winix HEPA 12 months, Blueair 6 to 9, Honeywell HEPA 12 and pre-filter 3, Shark up to 5 years. Timer vs sensor.

Short answer
Replace an air purifier filter on the interval the maker prints for that model, then shorten it for smoke, pets or 24-hour running. Levoit’s Core 300 filter page says every 6 to 8 months; the Core 400S-P manual recommends 12 months, with its indicator based on 12 hours of daily use. Coway’s AP-1512HH page lists the HEPA filter at 1 year and the deodorization filter at 6 months. Winix’s 5500-2 manual puts the True HEPA and washable AOC carbon filter at approximately 12 months, with the carbon filter washed every 3 months and the pre-filter cleaned every 14 days. Blueair’s 211+ page says 6 to 9 months; Honeywell’s manual says HEPA every 12 months and the odor-reducing pre-filter every 3 months; Shark’s HP152 page says up to 5 years. Only Honeywell says its reminder counts hours of use, so read the light as a prompt to look at the filter, not as a measurement of it.
If your filter light came on last week and the pleats are still white, keep reading before you buy: the makers below print calendars, and only two of them describe measuring anything.
Which interval does each maker print?
Every figure in the table is the maker’s own wording, read on 10 October 2026, and matches the filter by model page, which carries the part numbers and the live listings. Dyson is missing because dyson.com returned 403 on every page tried; no Dyson interval is quoted here.
| Purifier family | HEPA interval | Carbon interval | Pre-filter care | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Levoit Core 300-P, 300S-P | Every 6 to 8 months (one combined 3-stage filter) | Same combined filter | Not stated on the filter page read | Levoit Core 300 filter page |
| Levoit Core 400S-P | 12 months recommended; indicator at about 12 months | Same combined filter, 12 months | Brush or vacuum every 2 to 4 weeks; no water or liquids | Core 400S-P manual |
| Coway Airmega AP-1512HH, 200M | 1 year | Deodorization filter 6 months | Removable, washable; water or vacuum, dry fully before refitting | Coway AP-1512HH page |
| Winix 5500-2, AM80 | Approximately 12 months; cannot be washed | Washable AOC carbon filter: clean every 3 months, replace at approximately 12 months | Permanent pre-filter cleaned every 14 days | Winix 5500-2 manual |
| Blueair Blue Pure 211+ | 6 to 9 months (combined particle + carbon) | Same combined filter | Washable fabric pre-filter: rinse under water or machine wash, air dry | Blueair 211 collection page |
| Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max | Up to 9 months, tracked by RealTrack | Same combined filter | Not stated on the filter page read | Blueair 211i Max filter page |
| Honeywell HPA090 to HPA300 | Every 12 months | Odor-reducing pre-filter every 3 months, replaced not washed | The pre-filter is the carbon layer; vacuum around the unit to prolong filter life | Honeywell owner’s manual |
| Shark NeverChange HP152 | Up to 5 years; no hours basis printed | Not stated on the page read | Washable Debris Defense screen; no cleaning interval printed | Shark HP152 page |
The spread is 6 months to 5 years for the same job, so the interval is a property of the model, not of HEPA media. The running cost calculator turns each interval into filters a year: Levoit’s 6 to 8 months is 1.5 to 2 filters, Shark’s 5 years is 0.2.
What shortens the printed interval?
Three makers tie their interval to conditions in words, and none prints a shorter number of months for smoke or pets.
| Condition | What the maker prints |
|---|---|
| Heavy odors and particles | Honeywell: replace the odor-reducing pre-filter every 3 months, “especially if there have been heavy odors and particles in the home”; filters may need replacing more or less often depending on environment and hours used |
| Air quality, usage time, household conditions | Blueair 211+: “Filters last 6-9 months depending on air quality, usage time, and household conditions”; the pre-filter catches dust and hair “extending main filter life” |
| Environment | Winix 5500-2: “Intervals between filter replacement may vary depending on environment” |
| Babies, pets, smokers, cooking | Levoit: the Core 300 filter is “ideal for homes with” these, listed as use cases, with no separate shorter interval |
Hours matter as much as conditions. Levoit’s Core 400S-P manual bases its filter-life percentage on 12 hours of daily use, so a bedroom unit left on around the clock reaches the same count in roughly half the calendar time. A wildfire week or a shedding dog is the case for checking the filter monthly rather than trusting the light; the wildfire smoke purifier review and the pet hair and odor purifier review cover the units built for those two loads.
Is the filter light a timer or a sensor?
The light decides when most owners buy, so what it measures matters. Here is what each maker actually prints.
| Maker | Indicator | What the document says it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Honeywell | Check Filter and Check Pre-Filter lights | “Based on the air purifier’s hours of use”: a timer |
| Levoit Core 400S-P | Check Filter indicator, VeSync app percentage | App “uses a scientific algorithm to determine your filter life based on air quality, amount of use, and other factors”; percentage based on 12 hours of daily use; the indicator “should turn on at about 12 months” and you may not need to change yet |
| Levoit Core 300 | Filter Life Indicator | “Built-in algorithm”; works only with authentic filters; basis not stated on the filter page |
| Blueair 211i Max | Indicator light and app alerts | RealTrack “tracks filter life based on actual use and pollution levels” |
| Coway AP-1512HH | Filter Change Indicator | Pages read do not state timer or sensor; “Your Airmega will let you know” |
| Winix 5500-2 | Check Filter LED | Manual does not state the basis; reset by holding Filter Reset for 5 seconds |
| Shark HP152 | CleanSense IQ air-quality display | No filter-replacement timeline printed |
A timer counts the hours the fan ran and nothing about the air that went through it. A reminder that reads air quality, as Levoit’s app and Blueair’s RealTrack describe, can at least shorten itself in a dusty house. Neither kind sees the filter: Levoit’s own manual says the light may come on before the filter needs changing. An air quality monitor reading PM2.5 next to the outlet is the closest thing an owner has to a direct check.
Which parts are washable and which are not?
| Part | Wash it? | Maker’s instruction |
|---|---|---|
| HEPA filter | No | Winix: the True HEPA filter cannot be washed; Levoit: the main filter is not cleaned |
| Carbon filter | Only Winix’s AOC filter | Winix: wash every 3 months, no detergent, no water over 104 F, dry 24 hours or more; “filter performance may decrease after each wash”. Levoit: the activated carbon filter is not cleaned |
| Fabric or mesh pre-filter | Yes, for Coway, Winix and Blueair | Coway: water or vacuum, fully dried; Winix: every 14 days; Blueair: rinse, machine wash, air dry |
| Levoit pre-filter | Brush or vacuum only | Core 400S-P manual: every 2 to 4 weeks, “not with water or other liquids” |
| Honeywell pre-filter | No, replaced | Every 3 months; it is the carbon layer |
The pre-filter is the one part on this page that costs nothing to maintain, and Blueair says plainly that it extends the main filter’s life. Two minutes with a vacuum every two weeks is the cheapest way to make the printed interval true. Whether the main filter deserves the word HEPA at all is a separate question, answered on the True HEPA vs HEPA-type page.
Before you order a filter
Do not buy on the light alone. Open the unit, read the model label inside the housing, and look at the filter: grey, packed pleats or a drop in airflow mean replace, a white filter with a lit indicator means reset and check again next month. Then match the label to the part number on the filter by model page, because Levoit says its filter life indicator only works with authentic filters, and Blueair’s Auto and non-Auto 211+ filters are not interchangeable. If the purifier is undersized for the room in the first place, a new filter will not fix that; the bedroom and living room purifier review compares published CADR figures.
What should you do first?
- Find the maker’s interval for your exact model in the table above and write the install date on the filter frame.
- Clean the pre-filter now, on the maker’s schedule: Winix every 14 days, Levoit every 2 to 4 weeks, Coway and Blueair when visibly loaded.
- If the unit runs 24 hours a day, halve Levoit’s 12-hour-based figure and expect Honeywell’s hour counter to trip early.
- When the light comes on, inspect the filter before ordering; reset the indicator only after fitting a new one.
- Put the filter’s price and interval into the running cost calculator to see what the model costs a year before you buy the next purifier.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to wait for the filter light before replacing the filter?
No. Honeywell's owner's manual says its reminder counts the purifier's hours of use, and Levoit's Core 400S-P manual says the Check Filter indicator comes on at about 12 months but that you may not need to change the filter yet. Treat the light as a prompt to look at the filter, and replace it when the pleats are grey or the airflow has dropped.
Can I wash a HEPA filter instead of replacing it?
The makers read for this page say no. Winix's 5500-2 manual says the True HEPA filter cannot be washed, and Levoit's Core 400S-P manual says the main filter and the activated carbon filter are not cleaned. The washable parts are the pre-filters: Coway's, Winix's and Blueair's fabric or mesh screens, and Winix's AOC carbon filter, which Winix says loses some performance after each wash.
Does running the purifier 24 hours a day shorten the filter life?
Yes, where the maker counts hours. Levoit's Core 400S-P manual bases its filter-life percentage on 12 hours of daily use, so a unit run around the clock reaches the same count in about half the calendar time. Honeywell's reminder runs on hours of use. Blueair's 211+ page lists usage time alongside air quality and household conditions as what decides its 6 to 9 months.
Why does the carbon filter have a shorter interval than the HEPA filter?
Because the makers print one. Coway lists its deodorization filter at 6 months against 1 year for the HEPA, and Honeywell lists its odor-reducing pre-filter at 3 months against 12 months for the HEPA, 'especially if there have been heavy odors and particles in the home'. Winix's AOC carbon filter is washed every 3 months and replaced with the HEPA at approximately 12 months.
How do I reset the filter indicator after a change?
Each maker prints its own sequence. Winix's 5500-2 manual says to hold the Filter Reset button for 5 seconds. Honeywell's manual says the lights can be reset by holding each button with the unit plugged in but not powered on. Levoit's indicator is reset on the unit or in the VeSync app. Resetting without a new filter only silences the reminder; it changes nothing in the filter.

- Answer
- Replace on the maker’s printed interval, then shorten it for smoke, pets and 24-hour running: Levoit Core 300-P every 6 to 8 months, Core 400S-P 12 months, Coway AP-1512HH HEPA 1 year and deodorization filter 6 months, Winix 5500-2 HEPA and carbon approx. 12 months, Blueair 211+ 6 to 9 months, Honeywell HPA300 HEPA 12 months and pre-filter 3 months, Shark HP152 up to 5 years.
- Basis
- Replacement intervals, cleaning intervals and filter-indicator wording as printed on each maker’s filter page or owner’s manual: Levoit (Core 300 filter page, Core 400S-P manual), Coway (AP-1512HH product and filter set pages), Winix (5500-2 manual), Blueair (211 collection and 211i Max filter pages), Honeywell (HPA090 to HPA300 owner’s manual) and Shark (HP152 product page).
- Assumptions
- Dyson’s purifier and support pages returned 403 on 2026-10-10, so Dyson is left out rather than quoted from memory
- ‘Not stated’ means the page or manual read on 2026-10-10 does not print the detail; it does not mean the unit lacks it
- Only Honeywell prints a basis for its reminder (hours of use) and only Levoit’s app and Blueair’s RealTrack describe use and air quality inputs; Coway and Winix do not say whether their indicator is a timer or a sensor
- Method
- Comparison of the replacement and cleaning intervals printed in six makers’ filter pages and manuals, read on 2026-10-10, tabulated against the intervals already on OwnerSpec’s filter-by-model page. No filter was run to exhaustion or measured; the page is a document comparison.
