Short answer

Buy a humidifier on Prime Big Deal Days (October 6-7, 2026, per Amazon) or on Black Friday (November 27, 2026, the day after Thanksgiving) only if two maker figures fit your house: the output in gallons per day against the room, and the humidifier type against your tap water. EPA fact sheet 402-F-22-002 says ultrasonic and impeller units disperse tap-water minerals into the air as white dust and scale, while evaporative and steam types are not expected to disperse substantial amounts, so a discounted ultrasonic unit in a hard-water house carries a distilled-water or cartridge bill that outlives the sale. Vornado rates the Evap40 at 4.0 gallons in 24 hours on High at 70 F and 30 percent relative humidity; Honeywell rates the HCM-350 at 2 US gallons a day, with a wick to replace every 30-60 days. Amazon’s strike-through is a List Price or a 90-day median, so the denominator, not the percentage, tells you what the deal is worth.

The picks

  1. A large open room or a hard-water house that wants to keep using tap water

    Vornado Evap40 evaporative humidifier

Vornado owner's guide: 4-gallon capacity, 4.0 gallons (+/- 10%) evaporated in 24 hours on High at 70 F and 30% RH, humidistat, wicks last about 4-8 weeks; Vornado product page: up to 1,000 sq ft, two wicks included, 5-year satisfaction guarantee

  2. A bedroom-sized room where the tank and tray should go in the dishwasher

    Honeywell HCM-350 evaporative humidifier (HCM350B)

Honeywell manual: 2 US gallons (7.6 L) output per day, filter HAC-504AW, UV bulb averages 3,000 hours, tank and tray top-rack dishwasher safe; honeywellstore.com: wicking filter replaced every 30-60 days

  3. Soft or distilled water available and a quiet 215-505 sq ft room

    Levoit Classic 300S ultrasonic humidifier

Levoit product page: coverage 215-505 sq ft, 1.58 gal / 6 L tank, up to 60 hours on low mist, 26 W, auto mode holds 40-50% RH, 2-year limited warranty; no gallons-per-day figure or cartridge interval printed

  4. Already owns an Evap40 and wants the season's wicks at the deal price

    Vornado MD1-0034 replacement wick, 2-pack

Vornado owner's guide: genuine wick part MD1-0034, replaced about every 4-8 weeks depending on use, water hardness and environment; softened water may harden wicks, lime or iron may shorten their life

  5. Already owns an HCM-350 series unit and wants the wick on the same order

    Honeywell Replacement Wicking Filter A (HAC-504), 1-pack

honeywellstore.com HAC-504 page: fits HCM-300, HEV-300, HCM-500, HCM-600, HCM-700, HCM-1000 and HCM-2000 series; replace every 30-60 days depending on water quality and usage, or when hard, crusty, brittle or odorous

Do not buy a humidifier because it is marked down; buy it because its gallons per day fit your room and its type fits your tap water, and if they do not, the discount is on the wrong unit.

Is the discount real?

Amazon says the List Price is the manufacturer’s suggested retail price, validated as a price customers can find on Amazon and at other retailers, and the Typical or “Was” Price is the median price paid on Amazon in the last 90 days, excluding limited-time deals. Savings are computed against one of those two.

The FTC’s 16 CFR 233.1 accepts a former price when it was the actual, bona fide price offered to the public on a regular basis for a reasonably substantial period; an inflated price set up to enable a large reduction makes the bargain a false one. The denominator decides the percentage.

Amazon confirms Prime Big Deal Days 2026 for October 6-7, 48 hours of Prime-member deals. Black Friday is November 27, 2026, the day after Thanksgiving (Thursday, November 26 on the OPM federal holiday schedule). No Amazon page opened for this guide announced a Black Friday window.

Which spec does a sale tempt you to skip?

Output: the water a unit can move into the air per day, printed at conditions the maker chooses. Vornado’s Evap40 guide says 4.0 gallons, plus or minus 10 percent, in 24 hours on High at 70 F and 30 percent relative humidity. Honeywell’s HCM-350 manual says 2 US gallons (7.6 L) per day. Levoit’s Classic 300S page prints coverage and tank size but no gallons per day.

UnitTypeMaker output ratingMaker room figureTank
Vornado Evap40Evaporative4.0 gal in 24 h on High at 70 F and 30 % RHUp to 1,000 sq ft4 gal
Honeywell HCM-350Evaporative2 US gal (7.6 L) per dayNot printed in the manualNot printed in the manual
Levoit Classic 300SUltrasonicNot printed; up to 60 h on low mist215-505 sq ft1.58 gal / 6 L

A 2-gallon unit at 40 percent off is not a better deal than a 4-gallon unit at 20 percent off if the room needs 4 gallons. The bedroom humidifier review sorts units by room.

Does your tap water fit the type?

This is the trap the sale price hides. EPA fact sheet 402-F-22-002 lists four types, ultrasonic, impeller, evaporative and steam vaporizer, and says ultrasonic and impeller units are “very efficient at dispersing minerals in tap water into the air”. The visible result is white dust; the hidden one is scale in the tank, which EPA calls the most compelling reason to find an alternative to tap water. Steam and evaporative units “are not expected to disperse substantial amounts of minerals”.

EPA’s alternatives for an ultrasonic unit are bottled water labeled “distilled” (the most effective mineral removal; deionized and reverse-osmosis water remove less) or a demineralization cartridge if the maker recommends one. EPA adds that cartridge performance “may vary widely”, that white dust means minerals are not being removed, and that where tap minerals are high distilled water may be less expensive than cartridges.

Hardness number first, type second, discount last. The white dust guide explains the mechanism and the hardness unit converter turns a report or test strip into grains per gallon. Evaporative wicks are not immune: Vornado’s guide says lime or iron may shorten wick life and the sodium in softened water may harden wicks.

What does it cost to run after the sale?

Two formulas, filled from the maker’s interval and the price on the live card.

Season wick cost = (weeks you run it / wick interval in weeks) x (pack price / wicks per pack). Vornado’s interval for the MD1-0034 wick is approximately 4-8 weeks; Honeywell’s for the HAC-504 is 30-60 days. A 20-week season at the short end of Vornado’s range is five wicks.

Season distilled-water cost = maker gallons per day x days you run it x cost per gallon. For an ultrasonic unit on hard water, take gallons per day from the maker’s rating (or tank size divided by printed run-time hours, times 24) and the cost per gallon from the distiller cost per gallon calculator or the jug price you pay.

ConsumableMaker intervalWhere the interval is printed
Vornado MD1-0034 wickApproximately 4-8 weeks, depending on use, water hardness and environmentEvap40 owner’s guide
Honeywell HAC-504AW wickEvery 30-60 days, depending on water quality and usagehoneywellstore.com HAC-504 page
Honeywell HCM-350 UV bulbAverage 3,000 hours; power light turns from green to redHCM-350 manual
Levoit demineralization cartridgeNo day interval printed on the maker pageLevoit Classic 300S page

How much cleaning does it ask for?

EPA’s schedule for portable humidifiers: empty, dry and refill daily, and clean every third day, removing scale, deposits or film with a brush. Where the maker gives no cleaning product advice, EPA says a 3 percent hydrogen peroxide solution, and it says not to humidify above 50 percent relative humidity.

UnitMaker cleaning instruction
Vornado Evap40Clean several times a season or when algae or mineral deposits form; disinfect the base with 1 teaspoon chlorine bleach in 1 gallon of water for 20 minutes
Honeywell HCM-350Tank and tray top-rack dishwasher safe; filter, tank cap and housing are not; remove the filter, then scale removal, then disinfecting with 1 tsp bleach per gallon
Levoit Classic 300SCleaning brush included; the maker page prints no schedule

A unit you will not clean every third day is the wrong unit at any price.

Before you click the deal

Do not buy a humidifier until you have two numbers: the room’s relative humidity from a hygrometer, against EPA’s 50 percent ceiling, and your tap water’s hardness in grains per gallon from the unit converter, which decides evaporative or ultrasonic before the discount does.

Which units are worth buying on sale?

The three humidifiers and two wicks above were re-checked in stock on October 2, 2026, and the maker figures sit on each card. The price and any saving on each card are Amazon’s live figures with Amazon’s time stamp; this page states neither.

What should you do first?

  1. Read the room’s relative humidity with a hygrometer; above 50 percent, stop here.
  2. Find your hardness in grains per gallon and decide evaporative or ultrasonic.
  3. Match the maker’s gallons per day to the room before looking at the percentage.
  4. Run the wick or distilled-water formula with the live card price.
  5. Note which reference price the saving is measured against, then decide.

Frequently asked questions

Is an ultrasonic humidifier a bad buy if I have hard water?

EPA fact sheet 402-F-22-002 says ultrasonic and impeller humidifiers are very efficient at dispersing tap-water minerals into the air, which shows up as white dust and as scale inside the tank. EPA's alternatives are water labeled distilled or a demineralization cartridge, and it notes distilled water may be cheaper than cartridges where tap minerals are high. An evaporative unit sidesteps the question.

What does the struck-through price on an Amazon humidifier listing mean?

Amazon says the List Price is the manufacturer's suggested retail price, validated as a price customers can find on Amazon and at other retailers, and the Typical or Was Price is the median price paid on Amazon in the last 90 days, excluding limited-time deals. The saving is computed against one of those, so the reference price decides how large the percentage looks.

How often does a humidifier wick need replacing?

Vornado's Evap40 owner's guide says its wicks last approximately 4-8 weeks depending on use, water hardness and environment, and that softened water can harden them. Honeywell's HAC-504 page says wicking filters should be replaced every 30-60 days depending on water quality and usage, or when hard, crusty, brittle or smelly. Count the weeks you run it and divide.

How often does EPA say to clean a portable humidifier?

EPA's fact sheet says to empty the tank, dry all surfaces and refill portable humidifiers daily, and to clean them every third day, removing scale, deposits or film with a brush. Where the maker gives no cleaning product advice, EPA says to use a 3 percent hydrogen peroxide solution. Honeywell's manual adds that its tank and tray are top-rack dishwasher safe.

How much humidity should a humidifier add?

EPA says not to humidify indoor air above 50 percent relative humidity and to check with a hygrometer. If water condenses on windows, walls or pictures, EPA says to move the unit, lower the humidistat or run it less. Levoit's Classic 300S holds 40-50 percent in auto mode and the Vornado Evap40 has a built-in humidistat for the same job.

Answer
A humidifier deal is worth taking only if the maker’s output fits the room and the type fits the tap water. EPA 402-F-22-002 says ultrasonic and impeller units disperse tap-water minerals as white dust while evaporative and steam types are not expected to. Vornado rates the Evap40 at 4 gallons in 24 hours on High; Honeywell rates the HCM-350 at 2 gallons a day with a wick every 30-60 days.
Basis
EPA fact sheet 402-F-22-002 (June 2022) on humidifier types, water and cleaning; the Vornado Evap40 owner’s guide and product page; the Honeywell HCM-350 manual and HAC-504 filter page; the Levoit Classic 300S product page; Amazon’s published definitions of List Price and Typical Price; 16 CFR 233.1 on former-price comparisons; the OPM 2026 holiday schedule.
Assumptions
  • Portable, plug-in humidifiers bought in the US store during Prime Big Deal Days (October 6-7, 2026) or the Black Friday period; the slug carries no year and the dates are updated in the copy
  • The price and any saving shown on each pick card are Amazon’s live figures with Amazon’s time stamp; this page states neither
  • Maker output ratings are the maker’s own figures at the maker’s stated conditions (Vornado: 70 F and 30% RH), not independent tests, and real output falls as room humidity rises
Method
OwnerSpec compared published figures only: the EPA fact sheet, the Vornado and Honeywell manuals and maker pages, the Levoit product page, Amazon, FTC and OPM pages, all opened on 2026-10-02, and confirmed each pick in stock on Amazon the same day. It did not run, meter or test any humidifier and it did not track any listing’s price history.
