## Short answer

A pink or orange film in a humidifier tank is residue that the maker cleaning steps are written to remove, not a reason to replace the unit. Honeywell's cleaning guide lists slimy residue or discoloration as a reason to clean more often than its weekly baseline. EPA's Use and Care of Home Humidifiers page says to empty the tank, wipe all surfaces dry and refill a portable humidifier daily, and to clean it every third day with a brush to remove scale, deposits or film. The descaling step is vinegar: Levoit's Classic 300S manual soaks the tank in 3 US cups (710 mL) of distilled white vinegar for 15 to 20 minutes, and Honeywell soaks in undiluted vinegar for about 20 minutes. Disinfecting is a separate step, 1 teaspoon of chlorine bleach in 1 gallon of water for 20 minutes (Honeywell and Vornado), never mixed with the vinegar. Refill with distilled water, which EPA recommends to limit dispersed minerals.

## Fact sheet

- **Answer:** A pink or orange film in a humidifier tank is residue the maker cleaning steps remove in two passes: a brush and vinegar soak to descale (Levoit 3 US cups for 15 to 20 minutes, Honeywell undiluted for about 20 minutes), then 1 teaspoon of chlorine bleach in 1 gallon of water for 20 minutes (Honeywell and Vornado). EPA says to empty, dry and refill daily and clean every third day.
- **Basis:** EPA's Use and Care of Home Humidifiers page for the daily refill, the every-third-day cleaning, the 50 percent relative humidity ceiling and the distilled-water advice; the Vornado EVAP3, Levoit Classic 300S, Honeywell HCM-350 and Pure Enrichment MistAire manuals and the Honeywell and AIRCARE cleaning pages for the intervals, solutions and minutes in the table
- **Assumptions:** The humidifier is a portable tabletop or console unit (ultrasonic or evaporative), not a furnace-mounted whole-house humidifier; The film is pink, orange or slimy and wipes off with a brush; a hard white crust is mineral scale, which the same vinegar step removes; No maker manual or EPA page opened for this page names the film by colour or names an organism, so this page calls it residue and uses Honeywell's words, slimy residue or discoloration; The Honeywell HCM-350 manual prints the vinegar and bleach steps but no soak minutes and no weekly interval; those two figures come from Honeywell's own cleaning guide page; Pure Enrichment and Levoit print no bleach step; AIRCARE's figures come from its own blog, not an owner's manual, because no AIRCARE manual PDF could be opened
- **Method:** Comparison of the cleaning instructions printed in maker manuals and maker cleaning pages for five brands, set against EPA's humidifier care page, all read on 2026-10-09; nothing was tested and no cleaning was timed for this page. Prices on the product cards are Amazon's live figures and are never written into this page.

If the tank is clean and your complaint is a fine white powder on the furniture, this is the wrong page: that is minerals in the fill water, covered in the [humidifier white dust guide](/water/guides/humidifier-white-dust-hard-water/).

## What is the film, and does it mean the humidifier is finished?

No. Nothing in the five maker manuals and pages read for this guide says to discard a unit over a film, and nothing in them names the film by colour. The closest wording is Honeywell's: slimy residue or discoloration is a reason to clean more often than weekly.

A humidifier that sits with water in it grows the film. Vornado's EVAP3 manual says that if the unit is off with water in the base for 8 hours or longer, or is not cleaned as recommended, algae or bacteria may grow. EPA's Mold Course says stand-alone humidifiers should be cleaned very frequently, and that humidifier filters can themselves become moldy.

So the film is a cleaning-interval problem, and a new unit filled the same way grows it in the same week. If the tank is cracked anyway, the [bedroom humidifier comparison](/air/reviews/best-humidifier-for-bedroom/) and the [large-room humidifier comparison](/air/reviews/best-large-room-humidifier/) list current units by output; if it is only dirty, read on.

| What you see | What the maker wording covers | What removes it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Pink, orange or slimy film on the tank or base | Honeywell: slimy residue or discoloration; Vornado: algae or bacteria may grow if water stands 8 hours or more | Brush, vinegar descale, then a separate bleach disinfect (Honeywell, Vornado) |
| Hard white or grey crust on the base, heater or transducer | Scale, deposits or film (EPA); mineral deposits (Vornado) | The same vinegar soak, 15 to 20 minutes (Levoit) or about 20 minutes (Honeywell, AIRCARE) |
| Discoloured, hard, crusty wick | Normal: minerals and impurities left behind as water evaporates (Vornado FAQ) | Replace the wick; never soak it in vinegar or bleach (Honeywell) |
| Fine white dust on furniture | Dispersed tap-water minerals (EPA) | Distilled or low-mineral water, not cleaning: see the white dust guide |

## How often, and with what, does each maker say to clean?

Interval is the figure that differs most. EPA's baseline is the strictest: daily empty, dry and refill, and a brush clean every third day. The makers print weekly or longer, and every one of them shortens it for hard water or visible residue.

| Brand (document read) | Cleaning interval | Descaling solution and time | Disinfecting step | Wick or filter |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| EPA baseline | Empty, dry, refill daily; clean every third day with a brush | Follow the maker's suggestions; rinse any cleaning agent thoroughly | 3 percent hydrogen peroxide on water-contact surfaces as an alternative | Not stated |
| Vornado (EVAP3 owner's guide) | Several times a season, or when algae, mineral deposits or other particles form | Not printed for the base; wick odor soak 2 tsp white vinegar per 1 gallon, 20 to 30 minutes | 1 tsp chlorine bleach in 1 gallon water, stand 20 minutes, rinse until the smell is gone | Wick lasts approximately 4 to 8 weeks; replace when hard and no longer absorbing |
| Levoit (Classic 300S manual) | Change water daily; clean every week and before storage | 3 US cups (710 mL) distilled white vinegar in the tank, 15 to 20 minutes; float, filter and silencer soaked the same; no detergents | None printed | Clean or replace; no interval printed |
| Honeywell (cleaning guide page; HCM-350 manual) | Weekly; more often with hard water, mineral buildup, musty odor, slimy residue or discoloration | Undiluted distilled white vinegar, about 20 minutes (guide); wipe base, cap and tank with undiluted vinegar (manual) | 1 tsp liquid chlorine bleach per 1 gallon cool water, after rinsing the vinegar; never mix the two | Remove before cleaning; never soak in chemicals; replace when hard, odorous or output drops (part HAC-504AW on the HCM-350) |
| Pure Enrichment (MistAire manual) | Descale weekly or every other week, by usage and water type | 1 tsp white vinegar plus 1 tsp water in the base, stand 5 minutes, if scale resists the brush | None printed | Decalcification cartridge PEHUMDCAL for white dust; no interval printed |
| AIRCARE (descaling page) | Not stated as an interval | Ultrasonic: 2 tbsp white vinegar in a just-over-half-full tank, 20 minutes; evaporative: about 1 cup in a half-filled cabinet, 20 minutes | Not printed on the page | Cartridges and wicks every 30 to 90 days, by water quality |

Two cells are blank on purpose. Levoit and Pure Enrichment print no disinfecting step, so this page does not add one to their units; EPA's hydrogen peroxide line is the only alternative a regulator prints. The Honeywell HCM-350 manual itself prints no soak minutes and no interval; those come from Honeywell's own cleaning guide page.

## In what order do the vinegar and the bleach go?

Scale removal first, disinfecting second, with a rinse between. That is the order the Honeywell HCM-350 manual prints as two named steps, and the reason is on Honeywell's guide: vinegar and bleach must never be mixed.

The brush matters more than the soak. EPA's instruction is to use a brush to remove scale, deposits or film, and Pure Enrichment reaches for vinegar only if scale resists the brush. A soak loosens what the brush then lifts.

1. Unplug, empty, and remove the wick or filter. Honeywell says the filter is destroyed if it meets vinegar or bleach.
2. Brush the base, tank and cap. Pour the vinegar as the table prints it for your brand and wait the printed minutes.
3. Rinse until no vinegar remains. EPA says to rinse any cleaning or disinfecting agent thoroughly so it is not released into the air.
4. If your maker prints a bleach step, mix 1 teaspoon of chlorine bleach in 1 gallon of water, wet every surface, stand 20 minutes, and rinse until the bleach smell is gone.
5. Dry everything before refilling with distilled water.

**Before you buy anything**

Do not buy a new humidifier because the tank turned pink, and do not buy a demineralization cartridge either until you know which problem you have. A film that returns inside a week after a full vinegar and bleach clean points at the fill routine (EPA: empty, dry and refill daily), not the unit. If the humidifier runs above the ceiling, EPA says not to humidify indoor relative humidity above 50 percent; the [indoor humidity by outdoor temperature calculator](/air/calculators/indoor-humidity-by-outdoor-temperature/) gives the winter setpoint for your weather. If the unit really is done, the [humidifier deal check](/air/guides/humidifier-black-friday-prime-day-deal-check/) says which weeks the bedroom and large-room picks go on sale.

## When is the wick the problem, not the tank?

A wick is the paper or foam pad an evaporative humidifier pulls water through, and it collects everything the water leaves behind. Vornado's FAQ says a discoloured, hard, crusty wick is normal, because minerals and impurities stay in the wick as water evaporates.

The replacement rule is a condition, not a date, for most makers: Honeywell says replace when it is hard, smells or output drops; Vornado says when it stops absorbing water halfway up. Only two intervals are printed, Vornado's approximately 4 to 8 weeks and AIRCARE's 30 to 90 days, both depending on water. The [humidifier filter by model](/air/parts/humidifier-filter-by-model/) page lists the part number for each unit.

Hard water shortens all of it, and Vornado says chemically softened water may harden wicks. EPA recommends low-mineral or distilled water for every type, and calls distillation the most effective mineral-removal method.

## What should you do first?

1. Empty the tank, wipe it dry and refill it, today and every day: EPA's daily rule is the cheapest step on this page.
2. Clean with a brush every third day (EPA), or weekly at minimum (Levoit, Honeywell), and sooner the moment the film shows.
3. Descale with vinegar for the minutes your maker prints, rinse, then disinfect only if your manual prints a bleach step.
4. Switch the fill water to distilled, or check the tap with the [white dust guide](/water/guides/humidifier-white-dust-hard-water/) if a crust forms faster than you can clean it.
5. Replace a hard or smelly wick with the part from the [filter by model](/air/parts/humidifier-filter-by-model/) page instead of trying to soak it clean.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the pink or orange slime in my humidifier?

No maker manual or EPA page read for this page names it. Honeywell's cleaning guide lists slimy residue or discoloration as a sign to clean more often than weekly, and Vornado's EVAP3 manual warns that algae or bacteria may grow if the unit sits with water in the base for 8 hours or longer. Treat it as residue and follow the maker's descale and disinfect steps.

### How much vinegar do I use to clean a humidifier, and for how long?

Levoit's Classic 300S manual says 3 US cups (710 mL) of distilled white vinegar in the tank for 15 to 20 minutes. Honeywell's guide says undiluted vinegar for about 20 minutes. AIRCARE says 2 tablespoons in an ultrasonic tank, or about 1 cup in a half-filled evaporative cabinet, for 20 minutes. Pure Enrichment says 1 teaspoon of vinegar plus 1 teaspoon of water for 5 minutes.

### What is the bleach ratio for disinfecting a humidifier?

Honeywell's HCM-350 manual and Vornado's EVAP3 manual both print 1 teaspoon of chlorine bleach in 1 gallon of water. Vornado says let it stand 20 minutes, then rinse until the bleach smell is gone. Honeywell's guide adds that vinegar and bleach must never be mixed: the bleach step comes after the vinegar scale removal and a rinse. Levoit and Pure Enrichment print no bleach step at all.

### Can I soak the wick filter in vinegar?

Honeywell says no: never soak or wash a wicking filter in vinegar, bleach, soap or other chemicals, and remove it before cleaning the base. Vornado prints one exception, a new-wick odor soak of 2 teaspoons of white vinegar in 1 gallon of water for 20 to 30 minutes, then a cool rinse. A wick that is hard, smells or stops absorbing water halfway up is replaced, not cleaned.

### How often should a humidifier be cleaned?

EPA says to empty the tank, wipe all surfaces dry and refill a portable humidifier daily, and to clean it every third day with a brush to remove scale, deposits or film. The makers print longer baselines: Levoit and Honeywell say weekly, Pure Enrichment weekly or every other week, Vornado several times a season or when deposits form. Hard water and any slimy residue shorten every one of those intervals.
