Smart thermostat Black Friday and Prime Day deal check: confirm the 24 V wiring and the ENERGY STAR listing before you trust the discount

A smart thermostat deal is real only if your system is 24 V with a C wire or a maker's power kit, and the exact model number is on the ENERGY STAR list.

Short answer

A smart thermostat on sale is worth buying only after two checks the deal badge cannot show. First, the wiring: Google says Nest thermostats are designed to work with most 24 V systems and that high-voltage systems labelled 110, 115, 120 or 240 VAC, usually electric baseboard, are incompatible; ecobee prints the same 24-volt rule, and both makers sell a fix for a missing C wire, the Nest Power Connector and the ecobee Power Extender Kit. Second, the ENERGY STAR certified list, where a label means the model is independently certified, based on actual field data, to deliver energy savings. The list is indexed by model number family, so the ecobee Smart Thermostat Essential sits under EB-STATE7* and the Honeywell Home RTH9600WF under RTH9585WF. Then run your zip code through the ENERGY STAR Rebate Finder, because a utility rebate can beat a sale. Prime Big Deal Days run October 6-7, 2026 per Amazon; Black Friday is November 27, and Amazon has not announced its Black Friday window.

The picks

  1. 24 V system, heat pump or multi-stage, wants Google's checker first

Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) with Temperature Sensor

ENERGY STAR list: GA05###-** family qualified 2024-04-24, listed static temperature accuracy 0.09 F, network standby 0.10 W; Google: 20-30 VAC only, line voltage incompatible, some configurations need a C wire or the Nest Power Connector

  2. 24 V system with no C wire; the Power Extender Kit is in the box

    ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium

ENERGY STAR list: EB-STATE6* family qualified 2023-04-25, listed static temperature accuracy 0.53 F, network standby 1.83 W; ecobee: 24 VAC only, Power Extender Kit included, kit not for millivolt, high-voltage, dual transformer, fan coil or communicating systems

  3. Same wiring as the Premium without the built-in speaker or sensor

    ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced

ENERGY STAR list: EB-STATE6L* family qualified 2025-12-16, listed static temperature accuracy 1.11 F, network standby 1.51 W; ecobee: 24 VAC only, Power Extender Kit included

  4. Has a C wire already and wants the cheapest certified unit

    Amazon Smart Thermostat

ENERGY STAR list: S6ED3R qualified 2023-06-21, listed static temperature accuracy 0.31 F, network standby 0.89 W; the listing title itself reads C-wire required, and no Amazon support page was read to confirm it

Do not buy a smart thermostat because the deal badge is bright; if your baseboard thermostat says 240 V, every unit on this page is the wrong unit.

The price and any “Save” figure on each card above are Amazon’s live numbers with Amazon’s time stamp; this page states no price of its own.

Is the discount real?

The percentage depends on the denominator. Amazon’s seller guidance defines the struck-through List Price as the suggested retail price of a product as provided by a manufacturer, supplier or seller, sometimes called the MSRP, and a Typical Price as the median customers paid in the Amazon store over the past 90 days, not including limited-time promotions.

A saving against a List Price nobody paid is a different claim from a saving against the 90-day median. The FTC’s Guides Against Deceptive Pricing, 16 CFR 233.1, accept a former-price comparison when the former price is the actual, bona fide price at which the article was offered to the public on a regular basis for a reasonably substantial period of time.

Will it work on your system?

A C wire is the common wire that carries 24 V return power to the thermostat. Google says its thermostats are designed to work with most 24 V systems, even older ones, and prints 20-30 VAC for the 4th gen, 3rd gen, Nest Thermostat and Thermostat E; ecobee says its thermostats are compatible with most 24-volt residential heating and cooling systems in North America, including gas, oil, electric and dual-fuel.

Your systemGoogle Nest (Help pages)ecobee (support article and kit page)

Line voltage, thermostat labelled 110, 115, 120 or 240 VACIncompatible unless a professional fits a step-down transformer to 20-30 VNot compatible; look for 120 V or 240 V on the label, L1/L2 markings and thick wire nuts
Millivolt wall or floor heater, RV DC system, proprietary 1-2-3-4 or A-B-C-D wiring, solid fuelMillivolt, proprietary (non-standard labels such as 1, 2, 3 or A, B, C) and solid fuel are listed as incompatible or typically incompatible; RV DC not addressedNot compatible

Two details decide the cheap picks. ecobee’s kit page says the Power Extender Kit comes included with every ecobee thermostat except the Smart Thermostat Essential and Smart Thermostat Lite. The Amazon Smart Thermostat’s listing title reads C-wire required; no Amazon support page was found to confirm or soften that, so take the title as the rule.

ecobee says to ignore wire colours, which are not standardised, and read the connector label. Google offers an online Compatibility Checker to run before purchasing. The C-wire compatibility guide walks through the wall plate wire by wire.

Is the exact model on the ENERGY STAR list?

ENERGY STAR says smart thermostats that earn the label have been independently certified, based on actual field data, to deliver energy savings, under a specification effective January 1, 2017. The Version 1.0 criteria: static temperature accuracy within plus or minus 2.0 F, network standby power at most 3.0 W, and heating and cooling runtime reductions of at least 8% and 10% at the lower 95% confidence limit. The list is indexed by model number family, not by the listing name; rows read on 2026-10-03:

Two rows show why to search by number: “Essential” appears in no model name yet is certified under the ecobee 7 row, and RTH9600WF has no row of its own yet rides on RTH9585WF. A listing title that says ENERGY STAR is a claim; the row is the proof.

Which generation is on sale?

Google’s Help pages list the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen), the 3rd gen and the Thermostat E as separate models, and the ENERGY STAR list carries two Nest Learning Thermostat families: T3###, qualified 2019-12-03, and GA05###-, qualified 2024-04-24. A Black Friday listing can be either, so match the model number on the box to the family.

ecobee’s current names are Smart Thermostat Premium, Enhanced, Essential and Lite; the older SmartThermostat with voice control (EB-STATE5*), ecobee4 and ecobee3 are also listed, so an older ecobee on clearance is still a certified unit. The smart thermostat review compares the current models on the same specs.

Can a rebate beat the sale?

ENERGY STAR’s Rebate Finder says its partners sponsor rebates on certified products and asks for a zip code; Smart Thermostats is a listed category under Heating & Cooling. The page prints no amounts and this site has verified no utility’s figure, so run the search before the event and set the result against the card.

The saving after the sale is the setback, not the sticker: the setback savings calculator turns your fuel bill into a yearly number to set against the purchase.

Before you add it to the cart

Pull the old thermostat off the wall and photograph the terminals. A wire in the C terminal, or an ecobee with the kit in the box, makes the install a 24 V swap; a 240 V label makes every pick here a return. Then find the model number in the ENERGY STAR list and run your zip code through the Rebate Finder.

When do smart thermostats go on sale?

Amazon’s announcement puts Prime Big Deal Days at October 6-7, 2026, from 12:01 a.m. PDT on October 6, 48 hours across more than 35 categories. Black Friday is Friday November 27, 2026 and Cyber Monday November 30, by the calendar; as of 3 October Amazon had published no Black Friday window.

What should you do first?

  1. Switch the system off at the HVAC master switch or breaker, as ecobee describes, and pull the old thermostat.
  2. Read the terminal labels: R, W, Y, G and C mean 24 V; 120 V, 240 V or L1/L2 means line voltage.
  3. Find the model number family in the ENERGY STAR certified list, not the name on the listing.
  4. Run your zip code through the ENERGY STAR Rebate Finder.
  5. Compare the card’s saving against the Typical Price, not only the List Price.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my heating system can take a smart thermostat?

Open the old thermostat and read the wire labels, not the colours. Google says Nest thermostats are designed for most 24 V systems and that high-voltage systems, usually electric baseboard with thermostats labelled 110, 115, 120 or 240 VAC, are incompatible. ecobee prints the same 24-volt rule and adds millivolt, DC, proprietary and solid-fuel systems to its not-compatible list. Thick wires with wire nuts or L1/L2 labels mean line voltage.

Do I need a C wire for a Nest or ecobee thermostat?

Often, but not always. Google says heat-only, cool-only, single-stage heat pump and dual-fuel configurations need a C wire or the Nest Power Connector. ecobee says most owners power the thermostat with a C wire or the Power Extender Kit, which combines Y and G onto one wire to free a C wire; the kit works on 24 VAC systems only and ships with every ecobee except the Essential and Lite.

Is the ecobee Smart Thermostat Essential ENERGY STAR certified?

Yes, but not under its own name. The ENERGY STAR certified list files it under the model name ecobee 7 and the model number family EB-STATE7*, qualified 2024-07-30, with Ecobee Smart Thermostat Essential EB-STATE7-01 among the additional model numbers. The same row covers the Smart Thermostat Lite. Searching the list for Essential by name returns nothing, so search by the model number on the box.

What does the struck-through List Price on an Amazon thermostat listing mean?

Amazon's seller guidance defines the List Price as the suggested retail price of a product as provided by a manufacturer, supplier or seller, sometimes called the MSRP. A separate Typical Price is the median customers paid in the Amazon store over the past 90 days, not including limited-time promotions. The percentage saving on a card depends on which of those two is the denominator, so compare against the Typical Price.

When are Prime Big Deal Days and Black Friday 2026?

Amazon's announcement puts Prime Big Deal Days at October 6-7, 2026, starting October 6 at 12:01 a.m. PDT, 48 hours of Prime member deals across more than 35 categories. Black Friday falls on Friday November 27, 2026 and Cyber Monday on November 30 by the calendar; as of 3 October Amazon had not published a Black Friday window on any page this site could open.

Fact sheet and how to cite this page

Answer
A smart thermostat on sale is worth buying only after two checks: Google and ecobee both print that their thermostats fit most 24 V systems and that 110, 115, 120 or 240 VAC line-voltage systems are incompatible, and the ENERGY STAR certified list is indexed by model number family, so the ecobee Smart Thermostat Essential sits under EB-STATE7* and the Honeywell Home RTH9600WF under RTH9585WF. Prime Big Deal Days run October 6-7, 2026 per Amazon.
Basis
ENERGY STAR’s Connected Thermostats Version 1.0 key product criteria (static accuracy within 2.0 F, network standby at most 3.0 W, heating runtime reduction at least 8% and cooling at least 10% at the lower 95% confidence limit), the ENERGY STAR Certified Smart Thermostats dataset (120 rows, read 2026-10-03), Google Nest Help compatibility and technical specification pages, ecobee’s compatibility article and Power Extender Kit page, Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days announcement and List Price and Typical Price definitions, and 16 CFR 233.1.
Assumptions
  • Dates qualified, static temperature accuracy and network standby power are copied from the ENERGY STAR dataset’s date_qualified, static_temperature_accuracy and network_standby_average_power_consumption fields for each model number family
  • Prime Big Deal Days are October 6-7, 2026 per Amazon; Black Friday is Friday November 27, 2026 by the calendar, and Amazon had not announced a Black Friday window when this page was checked
  • A C wire requirement counts as confirmed only when the maker’s own page prints it; the Amazon Smart Thermostat’s requirement comes from its listing title alone and is flagged as such
Method
Spec comparison of the ENERGY STAR certified list and criteria, maker-published compatibility wording from Google Nest Help and ecobee support, and Amazon’s own event and pricing definitions, read on 2026-10-03. Nothing was bench-tested and no thermostat was wired. Prices and savings on the product cards are Amazon’s live figures and are never written into this page.
