Short answer

For a bedroom up to 222 sq ft the pick is the Levoit Core 300-P: the AHAM Verifide directory lists its smoke CADR at 143 and its suggested room size at 222 sq ft, CARB lists it as Mechanical (filtration only, no ions), and Levoit prints 56 W and a 2-year warranty. For a living room up to 674 sq ft the pick on paper is the Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max: smoke CADR 435 at 46 W, ENERGY STAR certified, but CARB lists it as Electronic and AHAM records an ion generator. The runner-up for a living room that wants a Mechanical listing is the Honeywell HPA304 at AHAM smoke CADR 300 and 465 sq ft. Skip every unit here if the room is larger than its AHAM suggested size: AHAM’s rule is a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the floor area, and the box figure is the one-air-change number, about five times larger. Skip the Electronic listings if you want no ionizer.

The picks

  1. A bedroom under about 220 sq ft and wants a filter-only unit

Levoit Core 300-P (bedroom, up to 222 sq ft)

AHAM directory: smoke/dust/pollen CADR 143/153/167, suggested room 222 sq ft at 4.8 ACH; CARB list: Mechanical (G-19-112); Levoit page: 56 W, 24-54.5 dB, 2-year limited warranty, filter Core 300-P-RF every 6 to 8 months; not in the ENERGY STAR dataset

Winix page: CADR 253 smoke / 252 dust / 247 pollen, AHAM Verified 392 sq ft, 23.5 dB lowest speed, Filter Q 1712-0123-00 at 12 months, 2-year warranty, 8-hour TWA ozone 0.22 ppbv in a 30 m3 chamber; CARB list: Electronic (G-24-234); not in the ENERGY STAR dataset

  6. Wants a 1-year HEPA filter interval and does not need an AHAM listing

    Coway Airmega AP-1512HH Mighty

Coway page: CADR 233 smoke / 246 dust / 240 pollen, 361 sq ft at 4.8 ACH, 77 W, 24-53 dB(A), HEPA filter 1 year and deodorization filter 6 months, bipolar device; CARB list: Electronic (G-16-011); no US AHAM directory entry; not in the ENERGY STAR dataset

  7. Wants the longest filter interval and does not need a CADR figure

    Shark NeverChange HP152

Shark page: up to 650 sq ft at one air change per hour (AHAM AC-1), 26 W, True HEPA Multi-Filter, NeverChange filter up to 5 years, 2-year limited warranty; no CADR, dB, ENERGY STAR or CARB statement on the page; CARB list: Mechanical (G-23-286); no US AHAM directory entry

  8. Wants the largest CARB Mechanical room size here, 465 sq ft

    Honeywell HPA304

AHAM directory: CADR 300/320/300, suggested room 465 sq ft at 4.8 ACH; CARB list: Mechanical (G-18-062); not in the ENERGY STAR dataset; Honeywell's product page returned 403 this session, so watts, dB, filter interval and warranty are not printed here

If you have not measured the room yet, this is the wrong page until you have: the CADR room-size calculator turns length and width into the smoke CADR you need, and it decides between the units below.

How was this shortlist built?

OwnerSpec compared eight units sold on Amazon US on four published listings, read on 2 October 2026. Nothing was run or measured; this is a spec comparison.

ListingWhat it givesWhere it was read
AHAM Verifide directorySmoke, dust and pollen CADR and a suggested room size at 4.8 air changes per hourahamdir.com, US market
ENERGY STAR Room Air Cleaners V3.0 datasetWhether the model is certified, its kWh per yeardata.energystar.gov, 247 rows
CARB certified air cleaning devicesMechanical (filtration only) or Electronic (may generate ozone, tested at or below 0.050 ppm)ww2.arb.ca.gov
Maker product pageWatts, dB, filter part number and interval, warrantyLevoit, Coway, Winix, Blueair, Shark

CADR, the clean air delivery rate, is the cubic feet per minute of particle-free air a unit delivers under AHAM’s test. AHAM’s 2026 white paper states the suggested room size is smoke CADR times 1.55 at 4.8 air changes per hour. AHAM’s consumer rule is simpler: a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room’s square feet, so a 200 sq ft room needs 132 or more.

Coway and Shark have no entries in the US AHAM directory, so their figures here are the makers’ own. Honeywell’s product page returned 403, so the HPA304 appears with AHAM and CARB data only.

How do the units compare on paper?

Room sizes are AHAM’s suggested size at 4.8 ACH unless marked as the maker’s figure. Watts, dB and filter intervals are the maker’s printed figures.

Every maker words HEPA differently: Levoit prints “HEPA-grade”, Winix and Shark “True HEPA”, Coway “HEPA Filter”, Blueair “HEPASilent”. AHAM files the Levoit units as “HEPA-Type” and the Blueair as “Fabric”. None of those is a certification.

Levoit Core 300-P: buy it or skip it?

Buy it if the bedroom is 222 sq ft or smaller and you want a unit CARB lists as Mechanical. AHAM’s directory prints smoke, dust and pollen CADR of 143, 153 and 167 and a suggested room size of 222 sq ft. Levoit’s page prints 56 W, 24 to 54.5 dB and a 2-year limited warranty.

Check price on Amazon

The flaw is the box claim: Levoit prints 1066 sq ft at one air change per hour next to 222 sq ft at 4.8, and the first number is the one on the carton. It is absent from the ENERGY STAR dataset.

The filter is the Core 300-P-RF, replaced every 6 to 8 months on Levoit’s page; the replacement filter page lists it with the other models here. Skip it over 222 sq ft: the next size up is the Vital 200S-P.

Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max: buy it or skip it?

Buy it if the living room runs to 674 sq ft and you accept an Electronic listing. Blueair’s page prints CADR of 435 smoke, 452 dust and 450 pollen, 674 sq ft at 4.8 ACH, 46 W and 23 to 53 dB. The ENERGY STAR dataset lists it at 259 kWh per year with a Most Efficient flag, the only unit here with one.

Check price on Amazon

The flaw is what the page does not say. CARB lists model 3613111100 as Electronic (G-23-076) and AHAM files it as a fan filter with an ion generator, while Blueair’s page never uses the word ionizer; it describes HEPASilent as electrostatic plus mechanical filtration. CARB’s fact sheet notes that ionizers charge particles so they deposit on nearby surfaces.

The ENERGY STAR dataset prints a smoke CADR of 443 and 687 sq ft against Blueair’s 435 and 674; this page uses the maker’s lower figure. The filter lasts up to 9 months and the warranty is 1 year, extendable to 3 on registration.

Skip it if you want no ion generator in the room: the Honeywell HPA304 is the largest Mechanical listing here.

Levoit Core 400S-P and Vital 200S-P: buy them or skip them?

Buy the Core 400S-P if ENERGY STAR matters and the room is under 358 sq ft. Levoit prints CADR 231, 358 sq ft at 4.8 ACH, 38 W, 22 to 52 dB and a 2-year limited warranty, and the ENERGY STAR dataset lists the Core 400S at 237 kWh per year. It draws the fewest watts of any unit here except the Shark.

Check price on Amazon

The flaw is the CARB listing, which splits by model code: “Core 400S” is Mechanical (G-21-166) and “LAP-C401S-WUSR”, which CARB names Core 400S-P, is Electronic (G-21-279). Levoit’s page prints the 358 sq ft and CADR 231 that AHAM files under “Core 400S”; AHAM’s LAP-C401S-WUSR row prints 363 sq ft. Check the code on the carton if the Mechanical listing is the reason to buy. Levoit’s Core 400S filter page names no fixed month interval.

Buy the Vital 200S-P if you want the largest Levoit that CARB lists as Mechanical (G-22-455). AHAM prints CADR 250, 254 and 289 and 388 sq ft; Levoit prints 50 W, 23 to 54 dB, a 2-year limited warranty and a filter designed to last 6 to 12 months.

Check price on Amazon

The flaw is the HEPA wording: Levoit says the filter is HEPA-grade “while operating in Sleep Mode, as tested by an independent lab”, which is a narrower statement than the carton suggests. It is not in the ENERGY STAR dataset. Skip both if the room exceeds 388 sq ft.

Winix 5510 and Coway Airmega AP-1512HH: buy them or skip them?

Buy the Winix 5510 if you want the highest AHAM-verified room size under 400 sq ft. Winix prints CADR 253 smoke, 252 dust and 247 pollen, an AHAM Verified 392 sq ft, 23.5 dB on the lowest speed, a 2-year warranty and Filter Q, part 1712-0123-00, at 12 months. The older 5500-2 uses Filter H, part 116130, on the same 12-month interval.

Check price on Amazon

The flaw is PlasmaWave. CARB lists the 5510 as Electronic (G-24-234), and Winix prints an 8-hour time-weighted ozone figure of 0.22 ppbv in a 30 cubic metre chamber, under CARB’s 0.050 ppm (50 ppb) ceiling but not zero. PlasmaWave switches off; the listing does not change. Winix prints no wattage.

Buy the Coway AP-1512HH if a 1-year HEPA filter interval and a 6-month deodorization filter suit you. Coway prints CADR 233 smoke, 246 dust and 240 pollen, 361 sq ft at 4.8 ACH, 77 W and 24 to 53 dB(A).

Check price on Amazon

The flaw is twofold: Coway has no US AHAM directory entry, so the CADR is the maker’s alone, and CARB lists the AP-1512HH as Electronic (G-16-011); Coway’s page lists a bipolar device. At 77 W it draws the most power here. Skip both if a Mechanical listing is the requirement.

Shark NeverChange HP152 and Honeywell HPA304: buy them or skip them?

Buy the Shark HP152 if the filter interval decides. Shark prints a NeverChange filter lasting up to 5 years, 26 W, a True HEPA Multi-Filter and a 2-year limited warranty, and CARB lists it as Mechanical (G-23-286).

Check price on Amazon

The flaw is that there is no CADR anywhere. Shark’s 650 sq ft is “based on AHAM AC-1, at one air change per hour”, the directory has no Shark rows, and the page prints no dB and no ENERGY STAR or CARB statement. Without a CADR this page cannot compute the 4.8 ACH room size. Skip it if you want a verified one.

Buy the Honeywell HPA304 if you want the largest Mechanical listing here. AHAM prints CADR 300, 320 and 300 and 465 sq ft; CARB lists it as Mechanical (G-18-062).

Check price on Amazon

The flaw is this page’s own gap: Honeywell’s product page would not load, so watts, dB, filter interval and warranty are not printed here. It is not in the ENERGY STAR dataset.

Measure before you buy

Do not order any of these until the room’s length times width is known. AHAM’s rule puts the smoke CADR at two-thirds of that figure, so a 15 by 20 ft living room (300 sq ft) needs 200 or more, which rules out the Core 300-P. Prices and any discount show on the cards above; the deal check explains how to read them against the CADR.

Who should skip all of them?

Anyone with a room larger than 674 sq ft. The Blueair is the ceiling here. An open-plan floor is sized as the whole connected area, and AHAM’s wildfire guidance asks for a smoke CADR equal to the room area.

Anyone who wants an ionizer or ozone feature. CARB’s fact sheet advises against intentional ozone generators, and its certification caps emissions at 0.050 ppm. This page recommends none of the Electronic listings for that purpose.

What goes wrong?

The room was sized off the carton. Levoit’s Core 300-P carton figure of 1066 sq ft is 4.8 times its AHAM room size of 222. Levoit and Shark both print a one-air-change figure.

The model code on the box is not the one on the list. The Core 400S and the LAP-C401S-WUSR carry different CARB types. Compare the code, not the name.

The filter interval was assumed. Core 300-P 6 to 8 months, Vital 200S-P 6 to 12, Winix 12, Blueair up to 9, Shark up to 5 years: a year of filters is a cost the card does not show.

Frequently asked questions

What size air purifier does a bedroom need?

AHAM's rule is a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room's floor area: its own example is a 200 sq ft room needing a smoke CADR of 132 or more. The Levoit Core 300-P is AHAM-listed at smoke CADR 143 with a suggested room size of 222 sq ft. Measure the bedroom first; a 12 by 14 ft room is 168 sq ft.

Why does the box say 1,000 sq ft when AHAM says 222?

The two numbers describe the same fan at different air-change rates. Levoit's Core 300-P page prints 1066 sq ft at one air change per hour and 222 sq ft at 4.8 air changes per hour. AHAM's Verifide seal uses 4.8 ACH, and its 2026 white paper gives the formula: room size in sq ft equals smoke CADR times 1.55. Size by the 4.8 ACH figure.

What does CARB Mechanical versus Electronic mean?

The California Air Resources Board lists every certified air cleaner as Mechanical or Electronic. CARB's fact sheet says Mechanical devices use physical filtration only and produce no ozone or ions, while Electronic devices may be capable of generating ozone but tested at or below 0.050 ppm. On this page the Winix 5510, Coway AP-1512HH and Blueair 211i Max are listed Electronic.

Which of these air purifiers is ENERGY STAR certified?

The ENERGY STAR Certified Room Air Cleaners dataset, read on 2026-10-02, lists the Levoit Core 400S at 237 kWh per year and the Blueair 3613111100 (Blue Pure 211i Max) at 259 kWh per year with a Most Efficient flag. It does not list the Core 300, Vital 200S, Coway AP-1512HH, Winix 5510, Honeywell HPA304 or any Shark model.

Is the Coway AP-1512HH AHAM verified?

Not in the US directory read on 2026-10-02: ahamdir.com returned no Coway, Airmega or Shark rows among its 58 brands. Coway's own page prints a smoke CADR of 233 and 361 sq ft at 4.8 ACH, so the figures exist, but they are the maker's and not AHAM-verified. The Levoit, Winix, Blueair and Honeywell units on this page all have directory entries.

Fact sheet and how to cite this page

Answer
For a bedroom up to 222 sq ft the pick is the Levoit Core 300-P: AHAM smoke CADR 143, CARB Mechanical, 56 W. For a living room up to 674 sq ft the pick on paper is the Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max: smoke CADR 435, ENERGY STAR certified, 46 W, but CARB lists it Electronic. The largest CARB Mechanical unit here is the Honeywell HPA304 at 465 sq ft.
Comparison basis
AHAM Verifide directory smoke, dust and pollen CADR and suggested room size at 4.8 ACH; the ENERGY STAR Certified Room Air Cleaners V3.0 dataset; the CARB list of certified air cleaning devices (Mechanical or Electronic); maker pages for watts, dB, filter part number, filter interval and warranty, for eight units sold on Amazon US.
Assumptions
  • Room area is length x width of one room with the door closed; AHAM’s suggested room size assumes 4.8 air changes per hour
  • A maker’s one-air-change room size describes the same CADR as its 4.8 ACH figure; the ratio between them is the maker’s, not OwnerSpec’s
  • AHAM, ENERGY STAR and CARB listings were read on 2026-10-02 and change as makers certify new revisions; the model code on the box must match the listed code
Method
OwnerSpec compared certifier listings and manufacturer-published specifications read on 2026-10-02 and confirmed each Amazon listing in stock the same day; it did not run, measure or test any air purifier, prints no health outcome, and reports only figures the cited document states.
