Best air purifier for wildfire smoke: AHAM's smoke-season rule is a smoke CADR equal to the room's square feet, and it shrinks every carton number by five

For wildfire smoke AHAM asks for a smoke CADR equal to the room's sq ft: Levoit Core 600S-P 391, Blueair 311i Max 283, Winix 5510 253. ENERGY STAR and CARB listed.

Short answer

For wildfire smoke AHAM Verifide recommends a smoke CADR equal to the room’s square feet, not the two-thirds for normal use, and EPA’s wildfire page says to choose a portable air cleaner sized for the room, one that does not produce ozone, run on the highest fan speed where people spend the most time. On that rule the Levoit Core 600S-P is the pick for a living room up to about 390 sq ft: the AHAM directory lists its smoke CADR at 391, the ENERGY STAR dataset at 387 kWh per year, and Levoit prints 49 W. For a bedroom up to about 250 sq ft the Winix 5510, smoke CADR 253 in the AHAM directory, is the budget pick, and the Coway Airmega 250, smoke CADR 249 on Coway’s page, is the CARB Mechanical pick. The Blueair 211i Max, smoke CADR 435 in the AHAM directory, is CARB Electronic, so a space above 390 sq ft is two units, not one.

The picks

  1. A bedroom up to about 250 sq ft in smoke season on the smallest budget

Winix 5510 (budget, smoke CADR 253)

AHAM directory: CADR 253 smoke / 252 dust / 247 pollen, 392 sq ft at 4.8 ACH; Winix page: Filter Q 1712-0123-00, HEPA and carbon 12 months, certifications AHAM / UL / CARB / Prop65; CARB list: Electronic (G-24-234); not in the ENERGY STAR dataset

  2. A room up to about 230 sq ft and wants ENERGY STAR and an AHAM row

Levoit Core 400S-P (mid, smoke CADR 231-234, ENERGY STAR)

AHAM directory: Core 400S 231/240/259 and 358 sq ft, LAP-C401S-WUSR 234/233/257 and 363 sq ft; ENERGY STAR dataset: 237 or 235 kWh/yr; Levoit page: 38 W, 2-year limited warranty; CARB list: Core 400S Mechanical (G-21-166), LAP-C401S-WUSR Electronic (G-21-279); filter part number not printed

  3. A room up to about 280 sq ft and wants the lowest running watts

Blueair Blue Pure 311i Max (mid, smoke CADR 283, 32 W)

AHAM directory: CADR 283/314/365, 439 sq ft at 4.8 ACH; ENERGY STAR dataset: 193 kWh/yr; Blueair page: 32 W, filter F3MAX up to 9 months, 1-year warranty extendable to 3 on registration; CARB list: Electronic (G-23-050)

  4. A living room up to about 390 sq ft in smoke season

Levoit Core 600S-P (large room, smoke CADR 391, ENERGY STAR)

    AHAM directory: CADR 391/398/436, 606 sq ft at 4.8 ACH; ENERGY STAR dataset: 387 kWh/yr; Levoit page: 49 W, 2-year limited warranty, filter LRF-C601-WUS; CARB list: LAP-C601S-WUS Mechanical (G-21-477), LAP-C601S-WUSR Electronic (G-21-516)

  5. A room up to about 250 sq ft and wants a filtration-only CARB listing

Coway Airmega 250 (CARB Mechanical, smoke CADR 249)

Coway page: CADR 249 smoke / 261 dust / 230 pollen, 465 sq ft at 4 ACH, 64 W, Max2 filter 1 year, washable pre-filter; CARB list: AP-1720H Mechanical (G-25-344); no AHAM directory row, not in the ENERGY STAR dataset

If the room only needs a purifier for ordinary dust and pollen, this is the wrong page: the bedroom and living room review sizes on AHAM’s two-thirds rule and costs less.

How was this shortlist built?

OwnerSpec compared ten units against four published listings and four EPA pages, read on 10 October 2026, and confirmed each linked Amazon listing in stock that day. Nothing was run or measured: this is a spec comparison.

CADR, the clean air delivery rate, is the cubic feet per minute of particle-free air a unit delivers under AHAM’s test. EPA’s Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home says to choose a portable air cleaner with a high CADR for tobacco smoke, which represents the smallest particles, and that its chart is based on an 8-foot ceiling. Only the smoke column decides anything here.

The Winix Tower XQ, the largest AHAM listing at smoke CADR 461, and the Honeywell HPA300 are in the table but not the picks: neither turned up as a complete unit in the Amazon US searches of 10 October. The large-room review covers the units above 400 sq ft on the everyday rule.

What does wildfire smoke change about sizing?

AHAM’s standards page states that for wildfire smoke it recommends a smoke CADR equal to the size of the room in square feet, where its normal rule is at least two-thirds of the room’s area, and that a ceiling above 8 feet needs a larger-rated cleaner. The CADR room-size calculator has a wildfire line for exactly this.

RoomEveryday smoke CADR (2/3 rule)Wildfire smoke CADR (AHAM)Picks that reach it
12 x 15 ft bedroom, 180 sq ft120180all five
15 x 20 ft living room, 300 sq ft200300Core 600S-P only
20 x 25 ft open plan, 500 sq ft334500none; two units

Ozone is the second filter. EPA’s wildfire page says to make sure the portable air cleaner does not produce ozone and names CARB’s list of air cleaners tested and shown to emit little or no ozone. CARB’s list page prints the limit, 0.050 parts per million (50 ppb), and adds that CARB does not evaluate effectiveness at removing pollutants; EPA’s ozone generator page states that ozone does not remove particles such as dust and pollen. The ozone and ionizer guide explains Mechanical and Electronic on that list.

Whether the unit is keeping up is a PM2.5 reading, not the purifier’s own light: the PM2.5 and AQI reading guide explains the scale and the air quality monitor review lists units that print one.

How do the units compare on paper?

Smoke CADR is the figure the named source prints; where AHAM and ENERGY STAR disagree both are shown. “Wildfire room” is the smoke CADR read as square feet, AHAM’s rule, rounded down. Room size is as the source prints it, at 4.8 ACH unless marked.

Coway has no row in the US AHAM directory, so its three figures are the maker’s, and the Airmega 400’s page prints 328 where the ENERGY STAR dataset prints 376 for the same AP-2015F: neither is used for a pick. The replacement part for every unit is on the filter-by-model parts page.

Levoit Core 600S-P: buy it or skip it?

Buy it if the smoky room is a living room up to about 390 sq ft and one unit has to do it. AHAM’s directory lists smoke CADR 391 and 606 sq ft, the ENERGY STAR dataset 387 kWh per year, and Levoit prints 49 W, a 2-year limited warranty and the filter LRF-C601-WUS.

Check price on Amazon

The flaw is the CARB code: LAP-C601S-WUS is Mechanical (G-21-477), LAP-C601S-WUSR is Electronic (G-21-516), and the Amazon listing does not say which ships, so check the carton if filtration-only is the requirement. Levoit’s filter page prints no fixed interval. Skip it under 250 sq ft: the Winix 5510 covers that for less.

Winix 5510: buy it or skip it?

Buy it if the room is a bedroom up to about 250 sq ft and the budget is the smallest here. AHAM’s directory lists smoke CADR 253 and 392 sq ft, and Winix prints Filter Q, part 1712-0123-00, with HEPA and carbon filters at 12 months each and “AHAM / UL / CARB / Prop65” under certifications.

Check price on Amazon

The flaw is the CARB listing: the 5510 is Electronic (G-24-234), Winix prints no wattage, and the unit is not in the ENERGY STAR dataset. Skip it above 250 sq ft in smoke season: a 300 sq ft room needs 300, and 253 is short.

Levoit Core 400S-P and Blueair Blue Pure 311i Max: buy them or skip them?

Buy the Core 400S-P if the room is up to about 230 sq ft and an AHAM row plus ENERGY STAR matter. AHAM lists the Core 400S at smoke CADR 231 and 358 sq ft and the LAP-C401S-WUSR code at 234 and 363 sq ft; the ENERGY STAR dataset lists 237 and 235 kWh per year; Levoit prints 38 W and a 2-year limited warranty.

Check price on Amazon

The flaw is twofold: Levoit’s filter page prints no part number, so the replacement is bought by model name, and the two codes carry different CARB types, Mechanical (G-21-166) and Electronic (G-21-279).

Buy the Blue Pure 311i Max if the room is up to about 280 sq ft and running watts decide. AHAM and the ENERGY STAR dataset both list smoke CADR 283, with 439 sq ft and 193 kWh per year; Blueair prints 32 W, the lowest here, the F3MAX filter at up to 9 months, and a 1-year warranty extendable to 3 on registration.

Check price on Amazon

The flaw is the CARB listing, Electronic (G-23-050), and the F3MAX interval is only “up to 9 months”, set by usage. Skip both at 300 sq ft: the wildfire rule asks for 300 and neither reaches it.

Coway Airmega 250: buy it or skip it?

Buy it if a CARB Mechanical listing is the requirement and the room is up to about 240 sq ft. CARB lists the AP-1720H as Mechanical (G-25-344), and Coway’s page prints smoke CADR 249, 465 sq ft at 4 air changes per hour, 64 W, a washable pre-filter and a Max2 filter replaced yearly.

Check price on Amazon

The flaw is that every figure is Coway’s: no AHAM directory row, no ENERGY STAR row, and Coway’s filter page did not load, so the Max2 part number is unverified. It also costs more than the Core 400S-P for 15 CADR. Skip it if a certifier’s CADR is the reason to buy.

Measure the room before the smoke arrives

Do not order any of these until length times width of the room the family will sit in is known. In smoke season AHAM’s rule is a smoke CADR equal to that number, so a 15 by 20 ft living room of 300 sq ft rules out four of the five picks, and a 180 sq ft bedroom admits all of them. Prices and any discount show on the cards; the air purifier deal check explains how to read a sale against the CADR.

What about the box-fan filter EPA describes?

EPA’s DIY page describes building one by attaching one or more furnace filters to a box fan with tape, brackets or a bungee cord, with a filter preferably rated MERV 13 or higher that is the same size and shape as the fan. The MERV rating guide explains what that rating means on a furnace filter.

EPA’s conditions: only certified fans with UL or ETL markings, 2012 model or newer; fans built before 2012 may pose fire risks and must not be left unattended or used while sleeping. EPA adds that commercial air cleaners with a measured CADR are typically preferred over DIY air cleaners, because the CADR tells you the size of the room they can serve. A DIY unit has no CADR, so the table above cannot size it.

What goes wrong?

The room was sized off the carton. Levoit’s 2909 sq ft for the Core 600S-P and 1,718 sq ft for the Core 400S-P are one-air-change figures; AHAM’s are 606 and 358, and the wildfire rule cuts them to 391 and 231.

An ozone-producing unit was bought for smoke. EPA’s Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home says to avoid portable air cleaners that intentionally produce ozone, and that no federal government agency has approved ozone generators for occupied spaces. Check the CARB list before the CADR.

ENERGY STAR was read as a performance mark. EPA’s guide states that the label does not refer to air-cleaning effectiveness in any way; it is the kWh column, nothing more. The true HEPA versus HEPA-type guide covers what the filter label says.

Frequently asked questions

What CADR does a room need for wildfire smoke?

AHAM Verifide's standards page states that for wildfire smoke it recommends a smoke CADR equal to the size of the room in square feet, against the two-thirds of the area it asks for in normal use. A 15 by 20 ft living room of 300 sq ft therefore needs a smoke CADR of 300, and only the Levoit Core 600S-P among the picks here reaches it.

Is a box fan with a furnace filter good enough for wildfire smoke?

EPA's DIY air cleaners page describes one as one or more furnace filters, preferably MERV 13 or higher and the same size as the fan, attached to a box fan with tape, brackets or a bungee cord, using only a UL or ETL listed fan from 2012 or newer. EPA adds that commercial units with a measured CADR are typically preferred because the CADR gives the room size.

Does CARB certification mean the purifier works on smoke?

No. CARB's list page states that CARB does not evaluate the effectiveness of air cleaners at removing pollutants. The certification is an ozone emission limit of 0.050 parts per million, printed on the same page, and a type: Mechanical for filtration only, Electronic for anything else. Smoke performance comes from the AHAM directory or the ENERGY STAR dataset, not from the CARB listing.

Which smoke purifiers are ENERGY STAR certified?

The ENERGY STAR Certified Room Air Cleaners dataset, read on 2026-10-10, lists the Levoit Core 400S at 237 kWh per year, the Core 600S-P at 387, the Blueair 311i Max at 193, the Blueair 211i Max at 259 with a Most Efficient flag, the Coway Airmega 400 at 366 and the Winix Tower XQ at 486. It has no row for the AP-1512HH, Airmega 250, Winix 5510 or HPA300.

Why does the carton say 1,733 sq ft when AHAM says 358?

Both describe the Levoit Core 400S-P. Levoit prints 1,718 sq ft at one air change per hour and 358 sq ft at 4.8 air changes per hour, and AHAM's directory sizes on 4.8. For wildfire smoke AHAM's rule is stricter again, a smoke CADR equal to the square footage, so the same unit is sized for a room of about 231 sq ft in smoke season.

Fact sheet and how to cite this page

Answer
For wildfire smoke AHAM recommends a smoke CADR equal to the room’s square feet, so the Levoit Core 600S-P (AHAM smoke CADR 391, ENERGY STAR 387 kWh per year, 49 W) covers a room of about 390 sq ft, the Blueair 311i Max (283, 32 W) about 280 sq ft and the Winix 5510 (253) about 250 sq ft. The Coway Airmega 250 (249, CARB Mechanical) is the filtration-only pick.
Comparison basis
AHAM Verifide directory smoke, dust and pollen CADR and suggested room size at 4.8 ACH; AHAM’s wildfire rule, smoke CADR equal to the room’s square feet; the ENERGY STAR Certified Room Air Cleaners V3.0 dataset; the CARB list of certified air cleaning devices and its 0.050 ppm ozone limit; EPA’s wildfire, air cleaner guide, DIY and ozone pages; maker pages for watts, filter part and interval, for ten units.
Assumptions
  • Room area is length times width of the space the air actually reaches, with an 8-foot ceiling, which is what AHAM’s rule and EPA’s chart assume
  • The maker’s one-air-change room size describes the same fan as its AHAM figure; divide a carton number by about five before applying the wildfire rule
  • AHAM, ENERGY STAR and CARB listings and Amazon stock were read on 2026-10-10; the model code on the box must match the listed code
Method
OwnerSpec compared certifier listings and manufacturer-published specifications read on 2026-10-10 and confirmed each linked Amazon listing in stock the same day; it did not run, measure or test any air purifier, makes no health claim beyond EPA’s and AHAM’s own words, and prints only figures the cited document states.
