## Short answer

For a standard 1-inch slot the pick is the Filtrete 20x25x1 MPR 1000, which 3M's own MPR
versus MERV chart pairs with MERV 11, and the runner-up is the Filterbuy 20x25x1 MERV 11,
whose product page prints an actual size of 19.5 x 24.5 x 0.75 in, electrostatically charged
media, a beverage board frame and a 3-month interval. Neither comes before the
furnace. The U.S. Department of Energy's Building America profile says most home filter boxes
were sized for a 1-inch fiberglass filter of about MERV 2, that systems run efficiently when
total pressure drop stays at or below 0.4 to 0.5 in. WC, and that the MERV 8 pleats it tested
had 2.7 to 4.7 times the pressure drop of fiberglass, with MERV 12 at over four times. Lennox's
EL196UHE manual is not certified above 0.5 in. w.c. in heating. Skip every filter here if the
cabinet takes a 4 or 5 inch media filter, and skip MERV 13 unless the furnace maker's data
allows it.

## Fact sheet

- **Answer:** For a standard 1-inch slot the pick is the Filtrete 20x25x1 MPR 1000, which 3M's own chart pairs with MERV 11, with the Filterbuy 20x25x1 MERV 11 (actual 19.5 x 24.5 x 0.75 in, 3-month interval) as runner-up. DOE's Building America profile caps total system pressure drop at 0.4 to 0.5 in. WC and found MERV 8 pleats at 2.7 to 4.7 times the drop of fiberglass, so the furnace's limit decides before the brand.
- **Comparison basis:** Maker-published specifications for 1-inch pleated filters from 3M Filtrete (MPR vs MERV chart), Filterbuy (20x25x1 MERV 8 and 11, 16x25x1 MERV 13 product pages), Nordic Pure and Aerostar (company sites), compared on MERV or MPR as printed, pack count, maker replacement interval, electrostatic charge, frame material, actual dimensions and whether a test lab or ASHRAE 52.2 is named, against the DOE Building America pressure-drop figures and the Lennox EL196UHE installation instructions.
- **Assumptions:** The furnace has a standard 1-inch filter slot; a 4 or 5 inch media cabinet takes a different filter and this page does not apply; The furnace maker's static-pressure limit, not the filter rating, is the ceiling; Lennox's EL196UHE manual is the one example read and other makers publish their own; Pack counts and in-stock status are as the Amazon listing showed on 2026-10-02; Filtrete's own product pages did not load this session, so Filtrete rows carry only what 3M's MPR chart prints
- **Method:** OwnerSpec compared manufacturer-published specifications read on 2026-10-02 and confirmed each listing in stock the same day; it did not install, run, pressure-test or bench-test any filter, prints no air-quality or health outcome, and reports only the figures the cited document states. Where a maker page did not load or did not print a figure, the table says so.

If the filter in the cabinet is 4 or 5 inches deep, this is the wrong page: every filter below is
a 1-inch pleat, and the [sizes page](/air/parts/furnace-filter-sizes-nominal-vs-actual/) covers
the deep ones.

## How was this shortlist built?

The candidates are 1-inch pleats sold in 16x25x1 and 20x25x1, the two sizes Lennox's EL196UHE
installation instructions recommend. Each was compared on what its maker prints: MERV (or MPR
where 3M prints that), pack count, replacement interval, electrostatic charge, frame, actual
dimensions and whether a test lab or ASHRAE 52.2 is named.

Nothing was bench tested; the pressure-drop figures are DOE's. Honeywell Home and Resideo are
absent because no 1-inch pleated product page could be found.

## What decides before the brand?

Static pressure is the resistance to airflow across the system, measured in inches of water
column (in. WC). DOE's Building America profile says most residential systems operate efficiently
when total pressure drop, filter included, is no higher than 0.4 or 0.5 in. WC, and that a filter
with a 0.25 drop alone can take half of a 0.5 in. WC allotment.

The same profile says the filter box in the vast majority of home systems was sized for 1-inch
spun fiberglass of about MERV 2. In the ARBI testing it reports, clean MERV 8 filters had 2.7 to
4.7 times that fiberglass filter's pressure drop, and every commonly available MERV 12 tested had
over four times.

The furnace manual holds the ceiling. Lennox's EL196UHE instructions say the furnace is not
certified for heating with external static pressure above 0.5 in. w.c., warn that high-efficiency
filters have a higher pressure drop than standard glass or foam filters, list the consequences
(reduced capacity, more limit trips in winter, a frozen indoor coil in summer), and tell owners to
check the filter maker's specifications against the Lennox Product Specifications bulletin.

DOE says a permanent split capacitor (PSC) motor keeps running above 0.5 in. WC but airflow falls
below the desired 400 cfm per ton, while an electronically commutated motor (ECM) holds airflow and
can use over 50% more energy if the filter and ducts are improperly sized.

## How do the filters compare on paper?

Every figure is the maker's. "Not printed" means the page read did not state it.

| Filter | Rating as printed | Pack | Maker interval | Electrostatic | Frame | Actual size (in) | Lab or ASHRAE 52.2 named |

No maker page read names a test lab or ASHRAE 52.2 next to its rating. EPA says MERV comes from
an ASHRAE test method and reports capture of particles between 0.3 and 10 microns; the makers
print the result, not the test.

## What does MPR mean against MERV?

MPR is 3M's own scale and 3M's chart is the only primary conversion. 3M describes MPR as capture
of particles between 0.3 and 1 micron, narrower than MERV's 0.3 to 10, and prints minimum capture
for the E1, E2 and E3 particle ranges on both scales.

| 3M MPR | 3M pairs it with | MPR minimum capture E1 / E2 / E3 | MERV minimum capture E1 / E2 / E3 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| MPR 300 | MERV 5 | 12 / 38 / 34% | n/a / n/a / 20% |
| MPR 600 | MERV 7 | 23 / 54 / 55% | n/a / n/a / 50% |
| MPR 1000 | MERV 11 | 41 / 77 / 88% | 20 / 65 / 85% |
| MPR 1200 | MERV 11 | 43 / 78 / 88% | 20 / 65 / 85% |
| MPR 1500 | MERV 12 | 54 / 83 / 90% | 35 / 80 / 90% |
| MPR 1900 | MERV 13 | 62 / 87 / 95% | 50 / 85 / 90% |
| MPR 2200 | MERV 13 | 69 / 90 / 96% | 50 / 85 / 90% |

FPR is a retailer's scale with no maker conversion chart read, so it appears only where Filterbuy
names it; the [MERV, MPR and FPR guide](/air/guides/merv-rating-explained-mpr-fpr/) has the detail.

## Filtrete MPR 1000 and MPR 1500: buy them or skip them?

Buy the Filtrete 20x25x1 MPR 1000 if the slot is
a standard 20x25x1 and the furnace manual sets no MERV ceiling. 3M's chart pairs MPR 1000 with
MERV 11 and prints minimum capture of 41, 77 and 88% across E1, E2 and E3, against 20, 65 and 85%
for a bare MERV 11.

The flaw is everything 3M's chart does not print: Filtrete's product pages timed out this session,
so interval, actual size, frame and electrostatic claim are absent here, and the chart names no lab.

Skip the Filtrete 20x25x1 MPR 1500 unless the
furnace maker's data allows a MERV 12, the rating DOE found at over four times fiberglass's
pressure drop. 3M pairs MPR 1500 with MERV 12 at 54, 83 and 90% minimum capture.

## Filterbuy MERV 8 and MERV 11: buy them or skip them?

Buy the Filterbuy 20x25x1 MERV 11 if you want
the specs in print. Filterbuy's page lists an actual size of 19.5 x 24.5 x 0.75 in, a beverage
board frame with aluminum dual wire backing, electrostatically charged media, a change every 3
months and a comparable rating of MPR 1000/1200 and FPR 7.

The flaw is shared with every row: Filterbuy names no test lab and no ASHRAE 52.2 for the MERV 11
claim.

Buy the Filterbuy 20x25x1 MERV 8 if the furnace
manual warns about high-efficiency filters, the blower is a PSC motor, or nobody has measured the
static pressure. It is the lowest rating here and the only one whose maker prints a shortened
schedule: 60 days with pets, 30 in a pollution zone, against the standard 3 months. Filterbuy calls
it comparable with MPR 600 to 1000 and FPR 4 to 7.

Skip it if the furnace maker has already signed off on a MERV 13 pressure drop.

## MERV 13 picks: Filtrete MPR 1900 and Filterbuy MERV 13, buy them or skip them?

Buy the Filtrete 16x25x1 MPR 1900 only with the
furnace maker's static-pressure data in hand. EPA says to choose MERV 13, or as high a rating as
the system fan and filter slot can accommodate, and to consult an HVAC technician. 3M pairs MPR
1900 with MERV 13 at 62, 87 and 95% minimum capture.

The flaw is the slot. DOE's route to high MERV in a system sized for 1 inch is surface area: a
filter with 4-in pleats has twice the surface area of one with 2-in pleats. A 1-inch MERV 13 in a
fiberglass-sized box is the case DOE's profile warns about.

The Filterbuy 16x25x1 MERV 13 is the same bet in
a 4-pack, the cheaper way to learn whether the frame seats before buying six. Filterbuy prints
15.5 x 24.5 x 0.75 in, a beverage board frame, electrostatic media, 3 months (up to 90 days) and a
comparable MPR 1500/1900 and FPR 10.

## Nordic Pure, Aerostar and Amazon Basics: buy them or skip them?

Buy the Nordic Pure 20x25x1 MERV 12 if the frame
matters: Nordic Pure's site describes a heavy-duty, moisture-resistant frame with a metal mesh grid
bonded to the pleats, made in the USA, changed every 30 to 90 days. The flaw is no printed actual
size or electrostatic claim, and MERV 12 carries DOE's four-times finding like the MPR 1500.

Buy the Aerostar 20x25x1 MERV 11 if US
manufacture is the tiebreaker. Aerostar's site prints no interval in months, actual size, frame or
electrostatic claim, only that high-efficiency filters usually last longer than fiberglass changed
every month.

Buy the Amazon Basics 20x25x1 MERV 11 only if
listing-level specs are enough: there is no maker page, and the listing title alone states
electrostatic media and 19.75 x 24.75 x 0.75 in actual, a quarter inch wider and taller than
Filterbuy's 20x25x1. Check that against the slot before switching.

**Do the cost per month with your own price**

Do not compare packs on the sticker. Divide the pack price on the card by pack count times the
maker's interval in months: a 6-pack at Filterbuy's 3-month interval covers 18 months, so divide by
18; a 4-pack at 3 months divides by 12. Nordic Pure's 30 to 90 days gives two answers, and Aerostar
and Filtrete print no usable interval, so put your own schedule in. The
[furnace filter interval guide](/air/guides/how-often-change-furnace-filter/) covers what shortens it.

## Who should skip every filter on this page?

**Anyone with a 4 or 5 inch media cabinet.** Those take a deep pleat with, per DOE, twice the
surface area and a lower pressure drop; a 1-inch filter there is the wrong part. The
[sizes page](/air/parts/furnace-filter-sizes-nominal-vs-actual/) covers nominal against actual.

**Anyone whose furnace manual sets a static-pressure limit nobody has measured against.** Lennox's
0.5 in. w.c. is one maker's number; the manual for the furnace in the basement counts.

**Anyone buying MERV 13 on a PSC blower without the furnace maker's data.** EPA's wording is "as
high a rating as your system fan and filter slot can accommodate", and the fan is the half that
gets skipped.

## What goes wrong?

**The frame does not seat.** Actual sizes differ by a quarter inch between brands at the same
nominal size: 19.5 x 24.5 against 19.75 x 24.75 above.

**The limit trips or the coil freezes.** Lennox's manual lists both as consequences of too much
pressure drop.

**The interval was the wrong one.** A pleat on a "3 months" habit with pets in the house runs past
the 60 days Filterbuy prints for that case.

- **Filterbuy 16x25x1 MERV 13, 4-pack**: A 16x25 slot, MERV 13 allowed by the furnace maker, and a 4-pack to test fit first (Filterbuy product page: actual 15.5 x 24.5 x 0.75 in, beverage board frame, electrostatically charged media, change every 3 months (up to 90 days), comparable with MPR 1500/1900 and FPR 10; no test lab or ASHRAE 52.2 named) Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CJZ77FK/?tag=ownerspec-20
- **Nordic Pure 20x25x1 MERV 12, 6-pack**: Wants a metal-mesh-backed frame and a US-made MERV 12 (Nordic Pure site: change every 30 to 90 days; heavy-duty moisture-resistant frame with a metal mesh support grid bonded to the pleats; made in the USA. Actual size, electrostatic status and any test lab were not on the page read) Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004QL764M/?tag=ownerspec-20
- **Aerostar 20x25x1 MERV 11, 6-pack**: Wants a US-made MERV 11 and does not need the maker to print an interval (Aerostar site: made in the USA; high-efficiency filters usually last longer than fiberglass, which needs changing every month. The listing title alone states electrostatic media and an actual size of 19.75 x 24.75 x 0.75 in; nothing on this row comes from a maker document) Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B088BYSCJ4/?tag=ownerspec-20

## Frequently asked questions

### Is a MERV 13 furnace filter too restrictive for a 1-inch slot?

It depends on the furnace, not the filter. DOE's Building America profile says most home filter boxes were sized for 1-inch fiberglass at about MERV 2, that systems run efficiently when total pressure drop stays at or below 0.4 to 0.5 in. WC, and that the MERV 12 pleats it tested had over four times the drop of fiberglass. Check the furnace maker's static-pressure data before any MERV 13.

### What MERV does Filtrete MPR 1000, 1500 and 1900 equal?

3M's own MPR versus MERV chart pairs MPR 1000 with MERV 11, MPR 1500 with MERV 12 and MPR 1900 with MERV 13, and also pairs MPR 300 with MERV 5, MPR 600 with MERV 7 and MPR 2200 with MERV 13. 3M describes MPR as capture of particles between 0.3 and 1 micron, a narrower band than the 0.3 to 10 microns EPA says MERV reports.

### How often do the makers say to change a 1-inch pleated filter?

Filterbuy prints change every 3 months on its MERV 8, 11 and 13 pages, with 60 days for homes with pets and 30 days in a pollution zone on the MERV 8 page. Nordic Pure says every 30 to 90 days. Aerostar prints no interval, only that high-efficiency filters usually last longer than fiberglass changed monthly. Filtrete's pages did not load this session.

### Does the actual size of a 20x25x1 filter differ by brand?

Yes. Filterbuy prints 19.5 x 24.5 x 0.75 in for its 20x25x1 filters and 15.5 x 24.5 x 0.75 in for 16x25x1. The Amazon Basics listing title states 19.75 x 24.75 x 0.75 in, a quarter inch larger each way, from the listing rather than a maker page. Measure the slot and the old filter's printed actual size before switching brands, because a quarter inch decides whether the frame seats.

### Which furnace filter should I buy for a Lennox furnace?

Lennox's EL196UHE installation instructions list 16 x 25 x 1 or 20 x 25 x 1 as recommended sizes, say the furnace is not certified for heating with external static pressure above 0.5 in. w.c., warn that high-efficiency filters have a higher pressure drop, and tell owners to check the filter maker's specifications against the Lennox Product Specifications bulletin. That bulletin, not a brand, is the answer.
