# Best large-room humidifier: the output, tank, coverage, wick part and humidistat each maker prints for its console and tower units, and why the sq ft on the box compares nothing

> Maker sheets compared: AIRCARE MA1201 3,600 sq ft and 3.6 gal, Levoit Superior 6000S 1,500 mL/h, Vornado EVDC500 3.5 gal per 24 h. No AHAM rating printed anywhere.

## Short answer

For a large open floor on hard tap water the pick is the AIRCARE MA1201, an evaporative
console: AIRCARE's product page prints coverage up to 3,600 sq ft, a 3.6 gallon tank, a
36 hour maximum run time, 4 fan speeds, an adjustable humidistat and the MAF1 SuperWick.
The runner-up is the Levoit Superior 6000S, the highest printed output on this page at
1,500 mL/h (about 9.5 gallons a day if run flat out, by arithmetic, not a rating), with a
6 gallon tank, 3,000 sq ft effective range and tap water refills. Under 840 sq ft the
Vornado EVDC500 is the value pick, and the only unit whose maker prints gallons per day:
3.5 in 24 hours. Skip every console if the room is under 600 sq ft (the Levoit OasisMist
1000S fits, on distilled water) or if a hygrometer already reads above the 50 percent EPA
says not to exceed. No maker page read prints an AHAM output rating.

## Fact sheet

- **Answer:** For a large open floor on hard tap water the pick is the AIRCARE MA1201: its product page prints up to 3,600 sq ft, a 3.6 gallon tank, a 36 hour maximum run time and the MAF1 wick. The Levoit Superior 6000S prints the highest output here, 1,500 mL/h, about 9.5 gal per day by arithmetic. No maker page read on 2026-10-09 prints an AHAM output rating.
- **Comparison basis:** Manufacturer product pages and manuals for the AIRCARE MA1201, EP9 800 and D46 720, Levoit Superior 6000S and OasisMist 1000S, Vornado EVDC500 and Evap40, Honeywell HEV685 and Dreo HM735S, compared on type, printed output, tank, coverage, run time, humidistat, wick part and warranty, against EPA's Use and Care of Home Humidifiers guidance.
- **Assumptions:** Coverage figures are maker claims with no shared test method and no AHAM rating printed, so they rank units from one maker only; Gallons per day printed as arithmetic (mL/h x 24 h / 3,785 mL per US gallon) is the maker's maximum setting run flat out, not a rated output; Tap water in most of the US carries enough minerals for an ultrasonic unit to leave white dust; EPA's distilled-water advice is the assumption behind the ultrasonic row
- **Method:** OwnerSpec compared manufacturer-published specifications read on 2026-10-09 from the product pages and manuals named in Sources, and confirmed each listed unit in stock the same day. No unit was run, measured or used; this is a spec comparison, not a test.

If the box says "up to 1,000 sq ft" and that is the number you are shopping by, close this page: no maker here prints a rated output, so that figure compares nothing, and the [indoor humidity calculator](/air/calculators/indoor-humidity-by-outdoor-temperature/) gives you the number that does.

## How was this shortlist built?

Every figure on this page is a manufacturer-published specification read on 2026-10-09 from
the product page or manual named beside it. Nothing was run, measured or used by this site,
and every listed unit was confirmed in stock the same day. Units were compared on type,
printed output, tank size, maker coverage, run time, humidistat, wick part number and warranty.

A console humidifier is a floor-standing evaporative unit with a tank of 2 gallons or more,
sized for a floor rather than a room: the step between the
[bedroom units](/air/reviews/best-humidifier-for-bedroom/) and the furnace-mounted
[whole-house units](/air/reviews/best-whole-house-humidifier/).

The limit the comparison turns on is EPA's: the Use and Care of Home Humidifiers page says
"Do not humidify to indoor relative humidity levels exceeding 50 percent," and in a cold
climate the window glass sets a lower ceiling still. The
[indoor humidity calculator](/air/calculators/indoor-humidity-by-outdoor-temperature/)
prints that ceiling for your outdoor temperature from the CEE table.

One gap runs through the whole table. No maker page read this session, from AIRCARE, Levoit,
Vornado, Honeywell or Dreo, prints an AHAM or ANSI output rating. Output and coverage are
therefore labelled maker-stated and rank units only within one brand. Elechomes' site refused
every fetch, so it is absent rather than guessed.

## How do the units compare on paper?

| Unit | Type | Printed output | Tank | Coverage (maker-stated) | Run time (max) | Humidistat | Wick or filter | AHAM rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AIRCARE MA1201 console | Evaporative | Not printed | 3.6 gal | Up to 3,600 sq ft | 36 h | Adjustable | MAF1 SuperWick, included | Not printed |
| AIRCARE EP9 800 pedestal | Evaporative | Not printed | 3.5 gal | Up to 2,400 sq ft | 60 h | Adjustable | 1043 SuperWick | Not printed |
| AIRCARE D46 720 tower | Evaporative | Not printed | 2 gal, two tanks | Up to 1,200 sq ft | 50 h | Adjustable | SuperWick 1040 | Not printed |
| Levoit Superior 6000S | Evaporative | 1,500 mL/h max | 6 gal / 22.7 L | 3,000 sq ft | 72 h on low | App, Auto Mode | 4 wick filters pre-installed | Not printed |
| Vornado EVDC500 | Evaporative | 3.5 gal in 24 h | 2 gal, two tanks | Up to 840 sq ft | Not printed | Automatic | MD1-0034 | Not printed |
| Vornado Evap40 | Evaporative | Up to 4 gal in 24 h | 4 gal | Up to 1,000 sq ft | Not printed | Built-in | 2 filters included | Not printed |
| Levoit OasisMist 1000S | Ultrasonic, cool mist | 350 mL/h max | 2.6 gal / 10 L | 300 to 600 sq ft | 100 h on low | Auto Mode, 40 to 80% target | None; manual says use distilled | Not printed |
| Honeywell HEV685 | Evaporative | Not printed | Two 1.5 gal tanks | Not printed | 24 h | Adjustable | Filter E (HC14) | Not printed |
| Dreo HM735S | Not printed | Not printed | 11 L | Up to 700 sq ft | 100 h | Not printed | Not printed | Not printed |

Three rows are there to be ruled out. Honeywell's store page marks the HEV685 discontinued
and prints no coverage; Dreo's HM735S page prints neither mist type nor output; the Evap40
showed out of stock on vornado.com on the day of writing.

Converting the Levoit figures is arithmetic, not a rating: 1,500 mL/h for 24 hours is 36 L,
about 9.5 US gallons (3,785 mL per gallon); 350 mL/h is 8.4 L, about 2.2 gallons. Both assume
the maximum setting running all day, which the Auto Mode on either unit will not do.

Wick fit and intervals for every family above are on the
[humidifier filter by model page](/air/parts/humidifier-filter-by-model/).

## AIRCARE MA1201: buy it or skip it?

Buy it if the space is one open floor and the tap water is hard. AIRCARE's page prints
coverage up to 3,600 sq ft, a 3.6 gallon tank, 36 hours maximum run time, 4 fan speeds, an
adjustable humidistat, casters, shut-off when empty and the MAF1 SuperWick in the box. As an
evaporative unit it is the type EPA says is not expected to disperse substantial amounts of
tap-water minerals.

The flaw is the missing output figure: AIRCARE prints no gallons per day for any of its three
units, so the MA1201 cannot be ranked against the Levoit or the Vornado on output. What can be
said is that 3.6 gallons over a 36 hour maximum run is 2.4 gallons a day at the slowest
setting, a floor, not a rating. The listing title calls it the MA Console; AIRCARE's own page
carries the SKU MA1201, and the Mini-Console is a different, smaller unit on the same listing.

Skip it if the room is under about 1,200 sq ft: AIRCARE's own D46 720 tower prints that
coverage with 2 gallons in two removable tanks and a 50 hour run time, and the EP9 800
pedestal prints 2,400 sq ft, 3.5 gallons and 60 hours with 9 fan speeds. Neither listing
could be matched to its model number on 2026-10-09, so neither is linked here.

## Levoit Superior 6000S: buy it or skip it?

Buy it if you want the highest printed output on this page and an app to hold the target.
Levoit's page prints a 6 gallon (22.7 L) tank, 1,500 mL/h, an effective range of 3,000 sq ft,
up to 72 hours on low, 28 to 45 dB, 30 W and a 2-year limited warranty. It is evaporative:
the page says the built-in wick filters capture minerals, ships four pre-installed, and fills
from a hose and funnel with "simple tap water".

The flaw is the paperwork around the wicks. The page sells a 4-pack replacement but prints no
interval and no part number, and the 1,500 mL/h row sits under a mislabelled "Max Runtime"
heading on the maker's own table. Four wicks at a time is the cost that decides this pick
against the AIRCARE.

Skip it if you will not run an app. The humidity target lives in VeSync, and Levoit's page
prints no on-unit humidistat range.

## Vornado EVDC500: buy it or skip it?

Buy it if the room is a large bedroom or living room under about 840 sq ft. Vornado's page is
the only one here that prints a daily figure: 3.5 gallons of output in 24 hours from a 2
gallon tank (two 1 gallon tanks), coverage up to 840 sq ft, automatic humidity control, the
MD1-0034 wick and a 5-Year Satisfaction Guarantee. Vornado calls the DC motor up to 90 percent
more energy-efficient.

The flaw is the tank against the output: at the printed 3.5 gallons a day a 2 gallon tank
empties in about 14 hours, so a cold snap means a refill morning and night. The Amazon title
says up to 1,000 sq ft; Vornado's own page says 840, and this page uses the maker's number.

Skip it if the whole floor is open: the printed 840 sq ft is a bedroom-and-hallway figure,
not a great room.

## Levoit OasisMist 1000S: buy it or skip it?

Buy it if the room is under 600 sq ft, the fill water will be distilled, and noise decides.
Levoit's page and manual print a 2.6 gallon (10 L) tank, 350 mL/h maximum mist, an effective
range of 300 to 600 sq ft, up to 100 hours on low, under 28 dB, 27.5 W, model LUH-M101S-WUS
and a 2-year limited warranty. Auto Mode holds a target set from 40 to 80 percent in steps
of 10.

The flaw is in the manual twice. It says "Using tap water may result in a white dust (dried
minerals) on surfaces" and recommends purified or distilled water; the
[white dust guide](/water/guides/humidifier-white-dust-hard-water/) explains why a softener
does not fix that. And the Auto Mode default target is 60 percent, above EPA's 50 percent
line, so set it down by hand on the first day.

Skip it if the tap water is hard and distilled water is not in the budget: at 350 mL/h on
high that is about 2.2 gallons of bought water a day.

**Two numbers before you buy**

Do not order any console until a hygrometer has read the space for one night and the
[indoor humidity calculator](/air/calculators/indoor-humidity-by-outdoor-temperature/) has
given the winter ceiling for your climate. Water already on the glass means the purchase is
the [window condensation guide](/air/guides/condensation-on-inside-of-windows-winter/), not a
humidifier. Hard water sends you to the AIRCARE, Levoit Superior or Vornado wick units; the
[hardness converter](/water/calculators/water-hardness-unit-converter/) turns a utility report
into gpg. Prices move in Q4: the
[humidifier deal check](/air/guides/humidifier-black-friday-prime-day-deal-check/) tracks
Prime Day and Black Friday listings for these models.

## What goes wrong?

**White dust on every surface.** An ultrasonic unit on tap water. EPA says ultrasonic and
impeller humidifiers are very efficient at dispersing tap-water minerals into the air, and
that white dust means a demineralization cartridge is not keeping up. The console units here
are all evaporative for that reason.

**The wick stops drawing.** Scale from hard water stiffens an evaporative wick; the AIRCARE
MA1201 page lists a demineralization cartridge, AU5003PK, as compatible. Vornado's MD1-0034 wick
page prints 4 to 8 weeks depending on use, and AIRCARE prints no interval at all, so the
[parts page](/air/parts/humidifier-filter-by-model/) is where the schedule lives.

**The floor overshoots.** A target left at a 60 percent default fogs the windows. EPA's test
is simple: water on windows, walls or pictures means relocate the unit, lower its humidistat
or reduce its use.

## Frequently asked questions

### How many gallons per day does a large-room humidifier need to put out?

No maker page read here prints an AHAM rating, so there is no standard figure to size against. Vornado is the only maker printing gallons per 24 hours (EVDC500 3.5, Evap40 4); Levoit prints mL/h (Superior 6000S 1,500, about 9.5 gal a day by arithmetic); AIRCARE prints tank size and run time only. Size by the winter humidity ceiling for your outdoor temperature, then compare output within one maker.

### Is an evaporative or an ultrasonic humidifier better for a large room?

On hard tap water, evaporative. EPA says ultrasonic and impeller humidifiers are very efficient at dispersing tap-water minerals into the air, while evaporative and steam types are not expected to disperse substantial amounts. Levoit's OasisMist 1000S manual says tap water may leave white dust and recommends purified or distilled water; its Superior 6000S, an evaporative unit, is built for tap water refills.

### What wick does each AIRCARE console take?

AIRCARE's own product pages print the fit: the MA1201 console takes the MAF1 SuperWick and comes with one, the EP9 800 pedestal takes the 1043 SuperWick, and the D46 720 tower takes the SuperWick 1040. The Vornado EVDC500 takes the MD1-0034 wick, which Vornado's wick page says to replace every 4 to 8 weeks depending on use. AIRCARE prints no interval on these pages.

### Why does the Amazon title say 1,000 sq ft when Vornado says 840?

Because there is no common test behind the number. Vornado's own EVDC500 page prints coverage up to 840 sq ft, and the Amazon listing title for the same model says up to 1,000 sq ft. This page uses the maker's figure. The gap is the reason the comparison table labels every coverage column maker-stated and ranks units only within one brand.

### What indoor humidity should a large-room humidifier be set to?

EPA's humidifier guidance says not to humidify indoor air above 50 percent relative humidity, and to relocate the unit, lower its humidistat or reduce its use if water condenses on windows, walls or pictures. In a cold climate the ceiling is lower still: the indoor humidity calculator on this site gives the winter limit for your outdoor temperature from the CEE table.
