## Short answer

The best space heater for one room is the Vornado MVH if a tip-over switch and a lab listing
matter most: Vornado's page prints a tip-over switch, a cool-touch case, overheat shut-off,
ETL Listed and a 5-year warranty, and its owner's guide prints 750, 1125 and 1500 W settings.
The Dreo Atom One is the pick for controls: Dreo prints 1000-1500 W, a 41-95 F digital
thermostat, a 1-12 hour timer and 37.5 dB, though the page read prints no lab listing. Heat
output is not a tiebreaker. EIA prints 1 kilowatthour as 3,412 Btu, so every 1500 W heater on
a standard 120 V outlet delivers about 5,118 BTU/h; ceramic, oil-filled and infrared only
change how that heat is delivered. Skip all of them if the whole house is cold: that is a
furnace or filter problem. CPSC says to plug a heater directly into the wall, never an
extension cord or power strip, and keep it 3 feet from anything combustible.

## Fact sheet

- **Answer:** Every 1500 W plug-in heater delivers about 5,118 BTU/h (1500 W times EIA's 3,412 Btu per kilowatthour), so the spec sheets decide on controls, not heat. The Dreo Atom One prints 1000-1500 W, a 41-95 F thermostat, a 1-12 h timer and 37.5 dB; the Vornado MVH prints a tip-over switch, ETL Listed and a 5-year warranty; the Lasko 751320 prints no tip-over switch; the De'Longhi EW7707CM runs with no fan.
- **Comparison basis:** Manufacturer product pages for the Dreo Atom One, Vornado MVH, Lasko 751320 and 5586 and De'Longhi EW7707CM-6A, plus the Vornado MVH owner's guide, compared on wattage settings, heater type, printed lab listing, tip-over switch, overheat protection, cool-touch housing, thermostat type and range, timer, noise and warranty; CPSC, NFPA and ESFI public pages for placement and plug rules; EIA for the Btu per kilowatthour constant.
- **Assumptions:** A standard US 120 V household outlet; the owner's guides and Lasko support put a 1500 W heater at 12.5 A on high; The 5,118 BTU/h figure is OwnerSpec's arithmetic from EIA's 3,412 Btu per kilowatthour, not a number EIA prints; The Vornado wattages come from the MVH owner's guide; Vornado's page for the 2026 MVH prints no wattage, so the 2026 unit's settings are not confirmed from a maker document
- **Method:** OwnerSpec compared manufacturer-published specifications read on 2026-10-03 and confirmed each listing in stock the same day; it did not run, measure or use any heater, prints no fire or injury outcome of its own, and reports only the figures the cited document states.

If more than one room is cold at once, this is the wrong page: start with the [furnace filter
interval](/air/guides/how-often-change-furnace-filter/), then a technician, because a 1500 W
plug-in is sized for one room and a shared circuit.

## How was this shortlist built?

OwnerSpec compared manufacturer-published specifications on 2026-10-03 and confirmed every
linked listing in stock the same day. Nothing on this page was run, measured or used.

The fields compared are the ones a maker actually prints: wattage settings, heater type,
lab listing, tip-over switch, overheat protection, cool-touch housing, thermostat type and
range, timer, noise and warranty. A lab listing counts only where the maker's own page prints
it, and a standard number only where the page prints that too. None did, so this page names no
standard number.

Three candidates were in stock but could not be compared: the Dr Infrared DR-968, the
De'Longhi Dragon TRD40615E and the Honeywell UberHeat 5. Their maker pages were unreadable or
unopened this session, so none of their specs appear here. The Lasko CT22425 and 5160 pages
returned 404.

## Why does every 1500 W heater make the same heat?

A watt of electricity turned into heat is the same amount of heat whatever the element. EIA's
energy units page prints 1 kilowatthour as 3,412 Btu, so 1500 W running for an hour is
1.5 kWh, or about 5,118 BTU/h. That last figure is OwnerSpec's arithmetic from EIA's constant,
not a number EIA prints.

1500 W is also the ceiling for a plug-in heater on a standard US outlet. The Vornado MVH owner's
guide says that, like any other 1500-watt electric heater, it draws up to 12.5 amps, and
Lasko's support page puts most of its heaters at 1,500 W on high and 900 W on low, about
12.5 A and 7.5 A. The [breaker-tripping guide](/air/guides/space-heater-tripping-breaker-watts-amps/)
works through what else that circuit can carry, and the [running cost
calculator](/air/calculators/space-heater-running-cost-calculator/) turns the wattage into a
monthly bill at your rate.

NFPA's tip sheet lists four electric types. A fan-forced heater blows warm air over metal coils,
a ceramic heater warms air over a ceramic element, an oil-filled radiator circulates heated oil
through its fins, and an infrared heater makes heat with infrared bulbs. The type sets noise,
warm-up feel and surface temperature, not the BTU count.

## How do the units compare on paper?

| Model | Type | Wattage (maker) | Tip-over switch | Lab listing printed | Thermostat | Timer | Noise | Warranty |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Dreo Atom One | Ceramic fan, oscillating | 1000-1500 W | Yes | None on the page read | Digital, 41-95 F in 1 F steps | 1-12 h | 37.5 dB | 12 months |
| Vornado MVH | Fan-forced | 750 / 1125 / 1500 W (owner's guide) | Yes, beyond 10 degrees | ETL Listed | Mechanical knob | None printed | Not printed | 5 years |
| Lasko 751320 | Ceramic tower, oscillating | 900-1500 W | Not printed | ETL Listed | Adjustable | 7 h | Not usable (page prints 0 dBa) | 3 years |
| Lasko 5586 (29 in tower) | Ceramic tower, oscillating | 900-1500 W | Not printed | ETL Listed | Adjustable | 8 h | Not printed | 3 years |
| De'Longhi EW7707CM | Oil-filled radiator, no fan | 1500 W, 3 settings | Not printed | None on the page read | Room thermostat plus safety thermostat | None printed | No fan | Shown as 2 and 3 years |

"Not printed" means the maker's page, as read this session, does not list the feature. It does
not mean the heater lacks it. Lasko's 5586 is in the table for comparison only, because no
listing for it was confirmed in stock.

## Dreo Atom One: buy it or skip it?

Buy it if the controls are what you will use. Dreo's page prints 1000-1500 W across H1, H2, H3,
ECO and Fan modes, a thermostat from 41 to 95 F in 1 F steps, a 1 to 12 hour timer, 37.5 dB,
70-degree oscillation, 3.8 lb, and tip-over and overheat protection, with a 12-month warranty.

The flaw is the listing line. The Dreo page read this session prints no ETL or UL mark, and
NFPA's tip sheet and ESFI both say to buy a heater that carries a testing laboratory's seal.
Check the carton or the plate on the unit before trusting it.

Skip it if a 12-month warranty is too short next to Vornado's 5 years, or if a fan at any
volume keeps you awake. The De'Longhi EW7707CM
has no fan.

## Vornado MVH: buy it or skip it?

Buy it if the two switches CPSC and NFPA describe are the deciding spec. Vornado's page prints
a tip-over switch, a cool-touch case, a 2-stage auto shutoff, overheat shut-off, ETL Listed and
a 5-year limited warranty. The MVH owner's guide adds three settings of 750, 1125 and 1500 W,
a shut-off if the unit tips more than 10 degrees in any direction, and a second shut-off if
the airflow is blocked.

The flaw is the control panel: a mechanical thermostat knob, no setpoint readout, no timer
printed. The wattages above also come from the owner's guide for the MVH, while the listing is
the 2026 version and Vornado's page prints no wattage, so the 2026 settings are unconfirmed.

Skip it if you want a timer or a numbered thermostat. The Dreo
Atom One prints both.

## Lasko 751320: buy it or skip it?

Buy it if an oscillating tower with a timer at the cheaper end is the goal. Lasko's page
prints 900 to 1500 W, 2 heat settings, an adjustable thermostat, a 7-hour auto-off timer,
overheat protection, a cool-touch housing, ETL Listed, a 3-year warranty and a 150 sq ft
coverage figure.

The flaw is what the spec list leaves out: no tip-over switch is printed, on this unit or on
the taller 5586. NFPA's tip sheet names auto shut-off on tip-over as a feature to choose. A
tower is also the tallest shape here, which is the shape a tip-over switch exists for.

Skip it if the heater will stand where a child or a dog passes. The
Vornado MVH prints the switch and the 10-degree
threshold.

## De'Longhi EW7707CM: buy it or skip it?

Buy it if silence decides. De'Longhi's page prints 1500 W, 3 power settings, a room thermostat
plus a safety thermostat and a thermal cut-off, and no fan: an oil-filled radiator warms the oil
inside its fins and lets air rise past them.

The flaw is how little the page prints. No tip-over switch, no lab listing, a working-capacity
line of 23.2 sq ft that reads like an error, and a warranty shown as both 2 years and 3 years
on the same page. Buy it on the fan-free design, not on the paperwork.

Skip it if you want heat you can feel within minutes: a radiator with no fan has nothing
moving the warm air toward you.

**Check the outlet before the heater**

Do not order any 1500 W heater until you know what else is on the circuit it will share. The
Vornado owner's guide and Lasko's support page both put it at 12.5 A on high, and a 15 A
breaker with a TV on the same line is the trip Lasko describes. The [breaker
guide](/air/guides/space-heater-tripping-breaker-watts-amps/) has the arithmetic, and the
[deal check](/air/guides/space-heater-black-friday-prime-day-deal-check/) says when the price
on the cards above tends to move.

## What goes wrong?

**The heater is on an extension cord or power strip.** CPSC's 2026 release says plug electric
space heaters directly into a wall outlet, never into an extension cord or power strip, and
ESFI adds not to plug anything else into the same outlet. The Vornado owner's guide warns
against extension cords and relocatable power taps for the same reason.

**It stands too close to something that burns.** CPSC and NFPA both print 3 feet from drapes,
furniture, bedding and anything else that can burn. NFPA's page counts space heaters and
heating stoves as 30 percent of home heating-equipment fires but 73 percent of the deaths in
them, and CPSC's release puts portable heaters at about 1,600 fires a year for 2020-2022.

**It runs while nobody is awake.** CPSC says to turn heaters off when sleeping, and NFPA and
ESFI say to turn them off and unplug them when leaving the room or going to bed.

**The cold is not a one-room problem.** A furnace that cannot keep up sends readers to a
space heater every winter. Check the filter first. CPSC's release also notes that
fuel-burning heating systems, including furnaces and fireplaces, can produce carbon monoxide,
which is the case for a [CO detector](/air/reviews/best-carbon-monoxide-detector/) in a home
with a furnace, whatever the plug-in heater does.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does a ceramic heater make more heat than an oil-filled radiator?

Not at the same wattage. EIA prints 1 kilowatthour as 3,412 Btu, so any 1500 W heater on high delivers about 5,118 BTU/h whatever its element. NFPA's tip sheet describes the difference as delivery: a fan-forced or ceramic unit blows warmed air, an oil-filled radiator warms the oil inside it, an infrared unit heats with bulbs. Pick by noise, controls and the switches printed on the sheet.

### Can a space heater run on an extension cord or power strip?

CPSC's 2026 winter release says to plug electric space heaters directly into a wall outlet, never into an extension cord or power strip. ESFI adds not to plug any other device into the same outlet as the heater. The Vornado MVH owner's guide and Lasko's support page both put a 1500 W heater at about 12.5 A on high, which is why a shared circuit can trip.

### How far from furniture does a space heater need to be?

CPSC's 2026 release says to keep portable heaters at least three feet away from drapes, furniture, bedding and other combustible materials. NFPA's electric portable heater tip sheet prints the same 3 feet (1 metre) from anything that can burn, including people, and says to place the heater on a solid, flat surface and turn it off when leaving the room or going to bed.

### Which space heaters on this page print a tip-over switch?

Vornado's MVH page prints a tip-over switch, and its owner's guide says the heater shuts off when tipped more than 10 degrees in any direction. Dreo's Atom One page prints tip-over and overheat protection. Lasko's 751320 and 5586 pages print overheat protection and a cool-touch housing but no tip-over switch, and De'Longhi's EW7707CM page prints a thermal cut-off and no tip-over switch.

### Is an ETL Listed heater the same as UL Listed?

Both are marks from a testing laboratory, which is what NFPA's tip sheet and ESFI say to look for on a heater. Vornado and Lasko print ETL Listed on their pages without naming a standard number, and Dreo's and De'Longhi's pages, as read this session, print no listing at all. OwnerSpec cites a standard number only where the maker prints one, and none did here.
