Compensated hardness is the number you program into the valve, not the lab figure. Whirlpool’s example: 20 gpg water with 2 ppm iron is programmed as 30.

How do I turn a hardness test into grains per gallon?

Divide mg/L (the same as ppm) by 17. Penn State Extension and NDSU Extension both give 1 gpg as about 17 mg/L; Pentair’s reference chart uses 17.1. A lab result of 171 mg/L as calcium carbonate is 10 gpg.

How many days between regenerations should I plan for?

No extension service or manufacturer states a rule. Penn State’s example lands on 6 to 7 days; the calculator defaults to 7.

A metered Fleck 5600SXT sets its own cycle: its service manual says the control divides “the unit capacity by the feed water hardness” and subtracts the reserve; the day override only forces a regeneration once that many days pass.

Which standard size does my number map to?

The 24,000 to 80,000 ladder is a marketplace convention tied to resin volume, not a standard; the figure on the box is the highest-salt-dose capacity. Pentair’s 5600SXT performance data (4005293) gives each dose:

Rated efficiency for all three rows is 4,400 grains per pound, at the low dose only. Whirlpool’s WHES44, 1.23 cubic feet sold as 44,000 grains, has the same shape: 13,000 grains at 2.6 lb, 34,800 at 9.7 lb, 44,000 at 16.7 lb.

Why buy the size above the arithmetic?

Because the salt-per-grain figure only holds at the low dose. Whirlpool’s manual, citing NSF/ANSI 44, says an efficiency-rated softener delivers not less than 3,350 grains per pound of salt and that “the efficiency rating is valid only at the minimum salt dose”.

California Health and Safety Code section 116785(b)(2) requires a softener installed on or after January 1, 2002 to be certified at no less than 4,000 grains per pound.

Published low-dose ratings run 4,272 to 5,060 grains per pound; the same documents’ high-dose rows work out to 1,945 to 2,635. A unit whose low-dose row covers the weekly load spends roughly half the salt per grain.

The trade-off is in Pentair’s manual: “using a low salt setting will save salt but the system will use twice as much water”.

Only after the calculator has a number

The 21,000-grain household above fits a 1.0 cubic foot Fleck 5600SXT on its mid-salt row (31,100 grains at 9.0 lb); only the 2.0 cubic foot row covers it at the 4,400 grains per pound dose. Two listings match Pentair’s 4005293 valve and tank sizes: the AFWFilters Fleck 5600SXT 32,000 grain, 9 x 48 in, 1.0 cu ft and the AFWFilters Fleck 5600SXT 48,000 grain, 10 x 54 in, 1.5 cu ft .

The 32,000 listing ships 10% crosslink resin; Pentair’s table is for 8% resin, so the rows describe the valve and tank, not this unit. Skip both if your iron is above the limits below.

When is a softener the wrong tool for iron?

Penn State Extension recommends a softener for iron only when pH is above 6.7, hardness is 3 to 20 gpg (50 to 350 mg/L) and dissolved iron is below 5 mg/L. The ceiling then depends on the unit:

The form matters more than the number. Penn State says colorless, reduced iron is removed by the unit, while red, oxidized iron (exposed to air or chlorine) clogs the resin. Water that is orange at the tap belongs on the iron in well water guide, where a filter goes ahead of the softener.

Manganese has no published compensation factor in any source cited here, so the calculator leaves it out.

How do I convert water hardness in mg/L to grains per gallon?
