The Moen 1225 fits single-handle kitchen and bathroom faucets introduced in 1981, held by a copper clip, and the Standard and Moentrol shower valves, whose handle pushes or pulls for volume and rotates for temperature. The Moen 1222 fits the Posi-Temp shower valve, introduced in 1985, whose single handle rotates only and has no volume control. The 1255 family replaced the 1225 in single-handle faucets after 2009 and sits under a retainer nut instead of a clip. The 1224 fits two-handle faucets and Roman tubs; the 1234 replaced it in 8 inch widespreads from 2014 and 4 inch centersets from 2015. The 1200 is the brass cartridge Moen’s listing titles for single-handle sinks and Moen’s shower index files under the pre-2007 Moentrol transfer valve. The 1222 and 1225 sit side by side on the shelf and share no parts, and Moen wrote a whole comparison article because people pick by looks: identify the valve by what the handle does, not by what the cartridge resembles.

Every row is Moen’s own statement. Where Moen prints two fits for one number, the table shows both.

Moen’s shower index also lists the 3/4 inch ExactTemp cartridges: 130156 and 147208 (thermostatic) and 130157 and 147210 (volume), split at 2009. No Moen page read this session lists a 1233, so it is not in the table.
How do you identify the valve without a model number?
Moen’s comparison article sorts every single-handle shower by what the handle does.

At a sink, the retainer decides it. A U-shaped copper clip means 1225; a nut means the 1255 family, and the nut’s shape and colour picks which one. Moen warns the copper clip is load-bearing: if it cannot be reinstalled or is damaged, “the water cannot be turned back on to the faucet until the copper clip is replaced”.
Will Moen send the cartridge free?
Often, yes, and this is the step to take before any link on this page. Moen’s Lifetime Limited Warranty covers “the original consumer purchaser for as long as the original consumer purchaser owns their home”. If the faucet “should ever develop a leak or drip during the Warranty Period, Moen will FREE OF CHARGE provide the parts necessary to put the faucet back in good working condition”.
The number is 1-800-289-6636 (Canada 1-800-465-6130). The claim needs the original sales receipt, the faucet must have been bought after December 1995, and non-homeowner purchasers (industrial, commercial and business use) get 5 years rather than lifetime. Labour is excluded. A second owner of the house is not the original purchaser.
Call Moen before you buy
If you are the original buyer and have the receipt, the cartridge above is a phone call, not a purchase. Buy the genuine 1225 or the genuine 1222HD when you need it today, bought the house with the faucet in it, or cannot find the receipt.
Genuine or aftermarket?
Moen’s warranty states that “defects or damage caused by the use of other than genuine Moen parts is not covered”. That is the whole published difference: OwnerSpec has fitted neither, and the aftermarket 1222 and 1255 kits on Amazon carry only their sellers’ compatibility claims.
Two of the genuine listings were not cleanly in stock on 24 September 2026. Moen’s plain 1222 showed an availability date rather than stock, and the 1200 showed limited quantity, so neither is linked. The in-stock genuine Posi-Temp part is Moen’s own 1222HD listing; Moen’s support pages read this session do not explain the HD suffix, so the difference stays unverified here.
If a 1200 or 1225 shell stays behind in the valve, Moen’s own fix is a 1/2 inch tap wrench and a 3/8 inch hardwood dowel, 1-3/4 inches long, with no puller part number. The Danco 86712 is sold for the 1200, 1222 and 1225 and does the same job with a handle. A shower valve that has been leaking behind the wall belongs with the smart leak detector review, not with a cartridge.

Is the Moen 1225 the same as the 1222?
No. Moen's valve comparison article puts the 1225 in the Moentrol valve, whose handle pushes or pulls for volume and rotates for temperature, and the 1222 in the Posi-Temp valve, whose handle rotates only and has no volume control. Posi-Temp arrived in 1985, Moentrol in the 1970s. If the handle only turns, it is a 1222.
Which Moen cartridge does a kitchen faucet take, 1225 or 1255?
Moen's kitchen cartridge index gives 1225 for single-handle faucets from 1981, held by a U-shaped copper clip, and the 1255, 160657, 150257 and 205013 family for faucets after 2009, held by a retainer nut. Moen says the date varies by style and model, so look for the clip or the nut rather than trusting the purchase year.
Will Moen send a replacement cartridge for free?
Moen's Lifetime Limited Warranty says that if the faucet develops a leak or drip, Moen will free of charge provide the parts needed to put it back in working order, for as long as the original consumer purchaser owns the home. Claims go to 1-800-289-6636 and need the original sales receipt. Non-homeowner purchasers get 5 years.
Does an aftermarket cartridge void the Moen warranty?
Moen's warranty text says defects or damage caused by the use of other than genuine Moen parts is not covered. It does not say the whole faucet loses coverage, only the damage the non-genuine part causes. OwnerSpec has not tested any aftermarket cartridge; the only published fit statements come from Moen and from the aftermarket listing titles.
What is the Moen 1200 cartridge for?
