Best whole-house sediment filter for well water: spin-down vs cartridge, by published spec

Short answer
For coarse sand on a private well, the pick is a spin-down filter with a flushable screen: the Rusco 1 inch Spin-Down is rated 1 to 25 GPM and 150 PSI at 73°F on Rusco’s install sheet, and Rusco’s product page lists polyester screens from 700 to 15 micron (24 to 1000 mesh). For fine silt, the pick is a 20 x 4.5 inch cartridge housing: the Pentek 150233 Big Blue with 1 inch ports drops 1 psi at 15 gpm on Pentair’s spec sheet, and takes a 5 micron nominal depth cartridge such as the Pentek DGD-5005-20. NDSU Extension puts a drilled well at a 10 to 15 micron filter and a dug or bored well at 2 micron. For sand and silt together, run the spin-down ahead of the cartridge. Rusty or black staining with clear water is a different problem: EPA’s secondary standards put iron at 0.3 mg/L and manganese at 0.05 mg/L, and that reader belongs on the iron guide, not here.
If the complaint is a stained toilet rather than grit in the aerator screens, this is the wrong page: that is iron or manganese, and the iron in well water guide reads that number.
How was this shortlist built?
Every figure here is a manufacturer’s published specification, read from the spec sheet or manual named beside it on 2026-09-11, or an extension-service threshold. Nothing was bench-tested. The six units were compared on rated flow, micron rating, initial pressure drop, port and housing size, and operating pressure and temperature.
A nominal micron rating is the maker’s own figure for the particle size the media mostly stops; an absolute rating is a tested cut-off. Pentair prints “nominal” on its R, ECP and DGD sheets and marks flow figures “based on manufacturer’s internal testing”. Nothing here is absolute.
The certification marks are narrower than they look. Pentair’s sheet certifies the 150233 to NSF/ANSI 42 for material and structural integrity; Culligan’s manual says the WH-HD200-C is WQA certified against NSF/ANSI 42 for material safety and structural integrity, “not certified for contaminant reduction”. No unit here lists NSF/ANSI 61.
Which type fits your well?
Get the lab report before the filter. EPA’s secondary standard for iron is 0.3 mg/L, with sediment listed among its effects beside orange staining; manganese is 0.05 mg/L, with black staining. Both are non-mandatory guidelines, and neither is fixed by the units below.
Turbidity is the lab’s measure of cloudiness, in nephelometric turbidity units (NTU). UGA Extension Bulletin 939 flags a private well above 5 NTU for further testing, and names sand and cartridge filters as the mechanical filtration that removes it.

Rusco 1 inch Spin-Down: buy it or skip it?
Buy it if the glass shows sand. Rusco rates the 1 inch body at 1 to 25 GPM and 150 PSI, with polyester screens from 700 to 15 micron; the install sheet lists a 1.5 inch body at 10 to 50 GPM. The sheet puts it before the pressure tank and after the pressure switch, so the tank backflushes the screen when the purge valve opens.
Skip it if the problem is haze that never settles: 15 micron is the finest flushable polyester screen, and NDSU’s dug-well figure is 2 micron (Rusco’s 1 micron pleated and melt-blown elements are cartridges, not a purged screen). Skip it above 100°F, the sheet’s ceiling at 40 PSI. Alternative: the iSpring WSP-50, for a stainless screen and a 3/4 inch thread.
iSpring WSP-50: buy it or skip it?
Buy it if the sand load is light. The WSP manual gives 20 GPM maximum through the 1 inch MNPT outlet, 20 to 90 psi, 40 to 100°F, and stainless screens at 50, 100, 200, 500 or 1000 micron, flushed at least once per week.
Skip the 50 micron screen on a genuinely sandy well: iSpring’s own listing says 50 or 100 micron screens “may be clogged very soon” on high-sediment water. Alternative: the Rusco, for the 150 PSI ceiling and the tank-backflush install.
Pentek 150233 Big Blue: buy it or skip it?
Buy it if the water is fine silt and the pump delivers 15 gpm or less. Pentair’s sheet lists 1 psi at 15 gpm for the 1 inch 150233, 90 psi maximum for the 20 inch sump, and 40 to 100°F. It is a bare housing: cartridge, bracket and wrench are separate.
Skip it if the pump’s cut-out is near 90 psi; the 10 inch sump is rated 100 psi. Skip the 3/4 inch 150467 (see port size below). Alternative: the Express Water WH100SS, for the gauge and the first cartridge in the box.
Express Water WH100SS: buy it or skip it?
Buy it if you want a complete 20 x 4.5 inch stage on day one. Express Water rates it at 0.25 gallons per second (15 GPM), 1 inch connections, 45 to 80 psi and 40 to 100°F, with a gauge and the FLTWH2045S 5 micron polypropylene cartridge rated 100,000 gallons or 6 to 12 months.
Skip it if static pressure sits outside 45 to 80 psi, the narrowest window on this page. Skip it on a drilled well with coarse grit: against NDSU’s 10 to 15 micron guidance, 5 micron alone loads faster than needed. Alternative: the 150233 with a 50 micron pleated cartridge.
iSpring WGB21B: buy it or skip it?
Buy it if silt comes with a taste or odour complaint. iSpring lists up to 15 GPM, 1 inch FNPT ports, 10 x 4.5 inch housings, 25 to 80 psi and 40 to 100°F, with the FP15B 5 micron polypropylene cartridge rated 50,000 gallons or 12 months.
Skip it if sediment is the only problem: 10 inch sumps hold half the media of a 20 inch unit, and the carbon stage still needs replacing. Alternative: the Culligan WH-HD200-C, a single 10 inch stage with a bypass.
Culligan WH-HD200-C: buy it or skip it?
Buy it if cartridge changes must not shut off the house: the manual describes a bypass valve, a pressure-relief button and a filter life indicator, on 1 inch fittings taking 10 x 4.5 inch cartridges. The manual gives 30 to 100 psi and 40 to 100°F; Culligan’s DIY page says 30 to 125 psi, and the manual wins.
Skip it if the pump delivers more than 10 GPM, the DIY page’s flow figure (the manual states none). Alternative: the Pentek 150233, double the sump length at 1 psi at 15 gpm.
Which cartridge goes in the housing?
Every 20 x 4.5 inch housing above takes either of these.

The reusable pleated polyester R50-BB (50 micron nominal, under 1 psi at 10 gpm) is listed only in 10 inch on Pentair’s current R-series sheet; the 20 inch R30-20BB is 30 micron. Culligan’s guide gives about 6 months or 24,000 gallons for 50 micron pleated polyester and 3 months or 12,000 gallons for 5 micron pleated cellulose, at roughly 4,000 gallons a month.
Before you buy either filter
Do not buy a micron rating until you know which well you have. NDSU Extension’s rule is 10 to 15 micron for a drilled well and 2 micron for a dug or bored well, and the rating sets the interval: Culligan rates its 50 micron pleated cartridge about 6 months, its 5 micron about 3. Iron above 0.3 mg/L rather than turbidity belongs on the iron guide. Sand you can see: the Rusco 1 inch Spin-Down . Haze: the Pentek 150233 with a DGD-5005-20 , nominal 5 micron, not absolute.
What goes wrong?
Pressure drop is the first failure. Every drop figure above is for clean media; NDSU says finer filters need more pressure, and the loss grows as the media loads. A gauge on each side of the housing is the honest indicator.
The housing has a ceiling the pump can exceed. Pentair’s 20 inch sump is rated 90 psi, and Express Water and the iSpring WGB21B both stop at 80 psi. Culligan’s manual adds cold water only, nothing above 100°F, and no freezing or direct sunlight.
Culligan’s manual says some harmless bacteria may attack cellulose cartridges; one that disintegrates or turns musty should be swapped for synthetic media (the ECP50-20BB is cellulose-polyester, the DGD-5005-20 polypropylene).
Port size costs pressure. On Pentair’s sheet the 3/4 inch 150467 loses 2 psi at 15 gpm, the 1 inch 150233 1 psi at 15 gpm, and the 1-1/2 inch 150235 1 psi at 20 gpm. Match the port to the pump’s flow, not the pipe.

Should I use a spin-down or a cartridge sediment filter on a well?
Spin-down for coarse sand, cartridge for fine silt. Rusco's polyester screens run from 24 mesh (700 micron) to 1000 mesh (15 micron) and are flushed, not replaced. A 20 x 4.5 inch cartridge such as the Pentek DGD-5005-20 is 5 micron nominal. NDSU Extension puts a drilled well at 10 to 15 micron and a dug or bored well at 2 micron. With both, run the spin-down first.
What micron rating does a whole-house sediment filter need on well water?
NDSU Extension's rule: a drilled well, which carries larger particles plus fine iron, should have a 10 to 15 micron filter; a dug or bored well needs the finest available, 2 micron, because fine clay is often present. Finer costs pressure: NDSU says a 2 to 5 micron filter needs more pressure to push water through. Every cartridge on this page is nominal-rated, not absolute.
Does an NSF/ANSI 42 mark mean a sediment filter housing removes particles?
Not on the housings here. Pentair's Big Blue sheet says the 150233 is certified to NSF/ANSI 42 for material and structural integrity requirements. Culligan's manual says the WH-HD200-C is WQA certified against NSF/ANSI 42 for material safety and structural integrity, not for contaminant reduction, and its cartridge micron column is marked not performance tested by WQA. EPA's consumer tool notes that Class I particulate reduction is an aesthetic-effects claim.
Where does a sediment filter go on a well, before or after the pressure tank?
It depends on the type. Rusco's install sheet puts its Spin-Down before the pressure tank and after the pressure switch, so opening the purge valve lets tank water backflush the screen from the inside out. iSpring's WSP manual says to flush the unit at least once per week. Cartridge housings are cold water only, 40 to 100°F, and Culligan's manual says to keep them out of freezing and direct sunlight.
How often does a 20 x 4.5 sediment cartridge need changing?
Culligan's selection guide gives about 6 months or 24,000 gallons for its 50 micron pleated polyester R50-BBSA, 5 months or 20,000 gallons for the 25 micron wound CW25-BBS, and 3 months or 12,000 gallons for the 5 micron pleated cellulose CP5-BBS, taking one month as roughly 4,000 gallons. Express Water rates its 5 micron FLTWH2045S at 100,000 gallons or 6 to 12 months, depending on incoming water.
