Short answer
An iron filter tank is sized by what the well pump can backwash, not by the iron reading. Each media publishes a backwash rate in gallons per minute per square foot of tank cross-section: Clack lists regular Birm at 12 to 18 gpm/sq ft, Inversand lists GreensandPlus at a 12 gpm/sq ft minimum at 55°F, and Watch Water lists Katalox Light at 8 to 10 gpm/sq ft. Divide the pump’s GPM at operating pressure by that rate to get the largest cross-section the pump can lift. A 10 GPM pump on regular Birm covers 10 / 12 = 0.83 sq ft, so a 12-inch tank (0.785 sq ft, 9.4 GPM needed) works and a 13-inch tank (0.922 sq ft, 11.1 GPM needed) does not. Service flow is the second limit: the Clack Birm data sheet caps domestic service at 5 gpm/sq ft, so that 12-inch tank passes about 3.9 GPM. Iron ppm, manganese ppm and pH choose the media and the pretreatment, never the tank diameter.
If you do not have a pump GPM measured at operating pressure, a bucket at the hose bib while the pressure switch is calling or the pump curve at your pressure, stop here and get it: the tank size depends on nothing else.

Backwash need = tank cross-section x the media's minimum backwash rate. Tank cross-section = pi x (diameter / 24)^2 in square feet, from geometry: 8 in 0.349, 9 in 0.442, 10 in 0.545, 12 in 0.785, 13 in 0.922, 14 in 1.069, 16 in 1.396. Rates: Birm 12 to 18 gpm/sq ft and fine Birm 8 to 10 (Clack); GreensandPlus 12 minimum at 55°F (Inversand); Katalox Light 8 to 10 (Watch Water). Service flow ceilings: Birm 5 gpm/sq ft domestic, GreensandPlus 12, Katalox Light 12; fine Birm's service flow is not on the Clack sheet, so the calculator uses the regular Birm figure. pH floors: Birm 6.8 for iron and 8.0 for manganese, GreensandPlus 6.2, Katalox Light 5.8.
What is the formula?
Largest tank area in square feet = pump GPM at operating pressure divided by the media’s minimum backwash rate in gpm/sq ft. Backwash is the reverse-flow rinse that lifts the bed and carries trapped iron to drain; it only works when the water rises fast enough to expand the bed.

Tank area is not a manufacturer number. A 12-inch tank has a 6-inch radius, so pi x 0.5^2 = 0.785 sq ft; a 13-inch tank is 0.922 sq ft; a 14-inch tank is 1.069 sq ft.
What does a worked example look like?
Take a 10 GPM pump, regular Birm, a test showing 3 mg/L iron and 0.1 mg/L manganese, and pH 7.0.
- Maximum area: 10 / 12 = 0.83 sq ft, using Clack’s 12 gpm/sq ft minimum.
- A 12-inch tank is 0.785 sq ft and needs 0.785 x 12 = 9.4 GPM (up to 14.1 GPM at Clack’s 18 gpm/sq ft top end). The pump clears the minimum.
- A 13-inch tank is 0.922 sq ft and needs 11.1 GPM. The pump lacks it.
- Service flow: 0.785 x 5 gpm/sq ft = 3.9 GPM, the domestic ceiling on the Clack Birm data sheet.
- Flags: pH 7.0 is above the 6.8 Clack lists for iron but below the 8.0 to 9.0 it lists for manganese, so the 0.1 mg/L manganese, which is over EPA’s 0.05 mg/L secondary standard, will pass through Birm.
Answer: a 12-inch Birm tank, and a different media or a pH adjustment if the manganese has to come out too.

Clack’s two Birm documents disagree on service flow: the current web page says 5 gpm/sq ft “or higher depending upon local conditions”, while the A8006/A8007 data sheet says not to exceed 5 gpm/sq ft domestic. The calculator uses the stricter figure. The same two documents also disagree on the backwash rate itself: the current web page lists regular Birm at 12 to 18 gpm/sq ft, while the A8006/A8007 data sheet lists 12 to 15. This page uses the current web page’s 12 to 18 range because it is the primary, currently published figure; a pump sized only to the 18 top end may still fall short of the older sheet’s 15 ceiling.
Each sheet also states a flaw: Clack says Birm cannot be used where hydrogen sulfide is present, Inversand’s GreensandPlus sheet describes a chlorine feed, and Watch Water’s Katalox Light capacity figures come from the maker’s own case study, so check its NSF/ANSI 61 listing directly.

What if the pump cannot reach the rate?
The smallest standard tank, 8 inch at 0.349 sq ft, needs 4.2 GPM for regular Birm or GreensandPlus at their 12 gpm/sq ft minimum and 2.8 GPM for Katalox Light or fine Birm at 8 gpm/sq ft. A pump under that backwashes nothing.
The options, in the order a dealer usually tries them:
- A lower-rate media: fine Birm or Katalox Light at 8 gpm/sq ft lifts a 12-inch tank on 6.3 GPM where regular Birm needs 9.4 GPM.
- A backwash-assist pump or a larger well pump, sized from the pump curve at your pressure.
- An air-injection system with a smaller bed; no maker publishes a generic gpm/sq ft for those, so size it from the one system’s manual.
Before you order a tank
Do not buy a tank from the iron ppm alone. Get the pump GPM at pressure, then a panel with iron, manganese and pH (the well water test panel guide lists what to order). If the pH is under the media’s floor, price an acid neutralizer before the iron filter, because the calculator above says the bed will not oxidize iron at any diameter. What backwash rate does Birm need?
Clack's Birm page lists a backwash flow rate of 12 to 18 gpm per square foot of tank cross-section for regular Birm, with a bed expansion of 20 to 40 percent and freeboard of at least 50 percent of bed depth. The Clack A8006/A8007 data sheet lists fine Birm at 8 to 10 gpm per square foot, which suits a smaller pump.
What backwash rate does GreensandPlus need?
The Inversand GreensandPlus technical data sheet sets a minimum backwash rate of 12 gpm per square foot at 55°F, a service flow of 2 to 12 gpm per square foot, and a minimum bed depth of 30 inches of GreensandPlus alone. Colder water is denser, so the 55°F basis matters: a well pump that only just reaches 12 gpm per square foot has no margin.
What backwash rate does Katalox Light need?
The Watch Water Katalox Light technical sheet lists a backwash velocity of 8 to 10 gpm per square foot, a service flow of 6 to 12 gpm per square foot, a backwash time of 5 to 10 minutes and 25 to 35 percent freeboard. That is the lowest backwash rate of the three media on this page, so it fits the smallest well pumps.
What is the EPA secondary standard for iron and manganese?
EPA's secondary drinking water standards list iron at 0.3 mg/L and manganese at 0.05 mg/L. EPA states that it does not enforce these secondary maximum contaminant levels; they address staining, taste and colour rather than being health-based limits. A well test above either figure is the usual reason a reader is sizing an iron filter at all.
What service flow can an iron filter tank pass, separate from backwash?
Service flow is the rate the bed handles in normal use, and each maker caps it per square foot of tank: the Clack Birm data sheet says not to exceed 5 gpm per square foot in domestic service, Inversand lists GreensandPlus at 2 to 12, and Watch Water lists Katalox Light at 6 to 12. Multiply by the tank's cross-section to get the GPM the tank can pass in service.
