Reverse osmosis output is rated gallons per day (GPD) times inlet pressure divided by 60 psi, times 1 plus 0.015 for every degree F above 77 F (minus 0.015 per degree below). Membrane makers rate GPD at 60 psi and 77 F, per Pure Water Products; the roughly 1.5 percent per degree rule is Puretec’s RO normalization guide. Daily need is people times gallons per person: ready.gov’s emergency figure is 1 gallon per person per day, so 4 people need 4 gallons. Worked example: an iSpring RCC7AK rated 75 GPD, fed at 50 psi and 60 F, makes 75 x (50 / 60) x 0.75 = about 47 GPD. Its 3.2 gallon tank holds 2 usable gallons at 40 psi (PAE RO-122), refilling in 2 / (47 / 24) = about 1 hour. That covers 4 gallons a day with hours to spare; a tankless 800 GPD class buys faucet speed, about 0.56 gallons per minute, not more gallons per day.

If your inlet pressure reads under 40 psi, price a booster pump before a bigger membrane: the table below shows a 75 GPD membrane making about 30 GPD at 40 psi and 50 F, and no tank size fixes that.

No EPA or extension document isolates drinking and cooking gallons. EPA WaterSense’s 82 gallons per person per day is whole-house use, so the per-person box stays editable.

Cold, low-pressure feed costs more than the box suggests. A 75 GPD membrane’s effective output:

The roughly 1.5 percent per degree figure is Puretec’s industrial RO normalization guide, the source in hand that states a specific percentage; Pure Water Products confirms the 77 F rating condition but its own text does not print a percent-per-degree number, so read this factor as an approximation rather than a membrane-specific value. What does a worked example look like?

Four people, an iSpring RCC7AK rated 75 GPD, inlet pressure 50 psi, water at 60 F, the stock 3.2 gallon tank.

  1. Need: 4 people x 1 gallon = 4 gallons per day.
  2. Pressure factor: 50 / 60 = 0.83.
  3. Temperature factor: 1 + 0.015 x (60 - 77) = 1 - 0.255 = 0.745.
  4. Effective output: 75 x 0.83 x 0.745 = 46.6 GPD, about 47 gallons.
  5. Usable tank: about 2 gallons of the 3.2 gallon total, from PAE’s RO-122 volume and factory precharge (Global Water Solutions USA’s RO Tanks specification sheet). Refill from empty: 2 / (46.6 / 24) = 1.0 hours.
  6. Verdict: a tank unit fits; the membrane makes 47 gallons against 4 needed.

A tankless class buys faucet speed, not more gallons a day: an Waterdrop G3P800 rated 800 GPD makes water at about 0.56 gallons a minute with no tank to refill, but needs a power outlet and Waterdrop specifies municipal tap water. Divide any class’s rated GPD by 1,440 minutes for its gallons per minute at the rated condition.

At 50 psi and 60 F the same membrane makes about 47 GPD.

How many usable gallons does a 3.2 gallon RO tank hold?

About 2 gallons. PAE's RO-122, the 3.2 gallon steel tank shipped with many under-sink systems, ships with a 5 to 8 psi factory air precharge, per Global Water Solutions USA's RO Tanks specification sheet. At 40 psi supply pressure that leaves about 2 gallons usable, the rest is the air bladder that pushes water to the faucet. A lost precharge cuts the usable figure further.

Is a tankless 800 GPD reverse osmosis system better than a 75 GPD tank unit?

It is faster at the faucet, not more water per day. An 800 GPD unit such as the Waterdrop G3P800 delivers about 0.56 gallons per minute at its rated condition, with no tank to run dry. Does cold well water in winter change which RO system I should buy?

It changes the effective output, not the class.
