Short answer
Water softener salt per regeneration is resin volume in cubic feet times the salt dose in pounds per cubic foot. The Hydrotech 5600SXT manual (#51569) publishes capacity at 6, 10 and 15 lb per cubic foot and marks 10 lb as the factory setting. Regenerations per year are the grains removed in a year divided by the resin’s capacity at that dose. Worked example: a 1.0 cubic foot softener at 10 lb per cubic foot, serving 4 people at 75 gallons each per day on 10 grains per gallon (gpg) water, removes 3,000 grains a day and holds 27,000 grains at that dose, so it regenerates every 9 days, 41 times a year, and dissolves 406 lb: ten 40 lb bags. At 6 lb per cubic foot the same unit holds 20,000 grains, regenerates every 6.7 days and uses 328 lb, eight bags, because the manual’s table works out to 3,333 grains per pound of salt at 6 lb against 2,700 at 10.
A bigger tank does not cut the salt bill: at the same dose per cubic foot, annual salt is the grains you remove divided by grains per pound, and only the dose setting moves that number.
Salt per regeneration, regenerations per year, bags per year
Formula: salt per regeneration = resin x dose; regenerations per year = people x gallons x gpg x 365 / (resin x grains per cu ft at that dose); bags = annual salt / 40. Capacity per cubic foot is 20,000 grains at 6 lb, 27,000 at 10 lb and 30,000 at 15 lb from the Hydrotech 5600SXT manual (#51569); the 8 lb row is a straight-line estimate between 6 and 10.
What is the formula?
In order:
- Salt per regeneration (lb) = resin volume (cu ft) x salt dose (lb per cu ft).
- Regenerations per year = people x gallons per person per day x hardness (gpg) x 365 / capacity at that dose (grains).
- Bags per year = regenerations x salt per regeneration / 40.
A salt dose is the pounds of salt the valve dissolves per cubic foot of resin at each regeneration; on a 5600SXT the brine refill time sets it.

What does a worked example look like?
The quick answer’s household: 1.0 cubic foot of resin, factory 10 lb dose, 4 people, 75 gallons each, 10 gpg.
- Salt per regeneration: 1.0 cu ft x 10 lb = 10 lb.
- Grains removed per day: 4 x 75 x 10 = 3,000. Per year: 1,095,000.
- Capacity at 10 lb: 1.0 x 27,000 = 27,000 grains, so the bed lasts 27,000 / 3,000 = 9 days.
- Regenerations per year: 1,095,000 / 27,000 = 40.6.
- Salt per year: 40.6 x 10 lb = 406 lb, which is 406 / 40 = 10.1 bags.
A metered valve regenerates a little sooner than step 3 says: the Hydrotech manual reserves 75 gallons per person, so this valve triggers with 300 gallons (3,000 grains) of capacity still unused. Read the calculator’s figure as the floor.
How much salt does the 6 lb dose save against 10 lb?
For the same household, here is every dose the Hydrotech table publishes, plus the 8 lb estimate:

The 6 lb setting saves 77 lb a year, 19 percent, against the factory dose, and 219 lb against 15 lb. The grains-per-pound column is calculated from the manual’s grains and pounds; the Hydrotech document does not print an efficiency rating.
The cost is water. Penn State Extension puts water use at about 50 gallons per regeneration, so the 6 lb row’s 14 extra regenerations add roughly 700 gallons a year, and Pentair’s 5600SXT manual (4005293) warns that using a low salt setting will save salt but the system will use twice as much water.
The salt ends up in surface water: the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency counts 68 lakes and streams over the state’s chloride standard, and a Marshall, MN program cut softener salt use 86 percent by optimizing or replacing units.
Where do the numbers come from?
The capacity constants are the Hydrotech-branded 5600SXT manual (#51569), which lists five resin volumes at the same three doses. Grains per pound barely moves with tank size, so the calculator scales per cubic foot.

Dose tables are brand-specific, even on the same valve. Pentair’s own 5600SXT manual (4005293) rates its 1.0 cubic foot system at 11,900 grains at 3.0 lb, 31,100 at 9.0 lb and 35,400 at 15.0 lb, with 4,400 grains per pound at the 3.0 lb dose. Whirlpool’s WHES44 (1.23 cu ft) prints 13,000 grains at 2.6 lb, 34,800 at 9.7 lb and 44,000 at 16.7 lb, as total pounds, not per cubic foot.

If your manual prints its own capacity table, use its numbers; the arithmetic stays the same. The rated figures are the ones the standards govern: Whirlpool’s manual, citing NSF/ANSI 44, says the efficiency rating is valid only at the minimum salt dose, and California Health and Safety Code section 116785(b)(2) requires 4,000 grains per pound of a softener installed on or after 1 January 2002. No manufacturer document found publishes an 8 lb row, so the calculator interpolates it.
Before you touch the brine refill setting
The regenerations-per-year figure is only as good as the gpg you typed. A hardness test strip or a lab result costs less than one bag of salt and decides whether the 6 lb row covers your load. Get the number, run the size calculator to confirm the bed is not undersized, and only then lower the dose. If the tap already shows white scale at the factory setting, the dose is not your problem: the resin volume is.

Does a bigger water softener use less salt?
Not at the same dose per cubic foot. Annual salt equals the grains removed in a year divided by grains per pound of salt, and the Hydrotech 5600SXT table gives the same grains per pound for every resin volume: about 3,333 at 6 lb per cubic foot and 2,700 at 10 lb. A larger bed regenerates less often but dissolves proportionally more salt each time.
Why does the low salt setting use more water?
Because each regeneration backwashes, brines and rinses for a fixed time regardless of dose. Penn State Extension puts water use at about 50 gallons per regeneration, and Pentair's 5600SXT manual (4005293) says that using a low salt setting will save salt but the system will use twice as much water. The 6 lb dose in the worked example adds 14 regenerations a year, roughly 700 gallons.
What salt efficiency does a certified softener have to reach?
Whirlpool's WHES40/WHES44 manual (7345469), citing NSF/ANSI 44, says an efficiency-rated softener delivers not less than 3,350 grains per pound of salt, valid only at the minimum salt dose. California Health and Safety Code section 116785(b)(2) requires a self-regenerating softener installed on or after 1 January 2002 to be certified at no less than 4,000 grains per pound. Both figures apply to the low dose row, not the factory setting.
