## Short answer

No water softener maker or extension document read for this page prints an average lifespan, so the "10 to 15 years" quoted online is not backed by any of them. What the makers do print are warranty periods and the one thing that kills resin. Pentair's residential filtration warranty covers Fleck control valves for 5 years and PolyGlass fiberglass tanks of 13 inches or less for 10 years; Whirlpool's WHES40 manual covers the resin and salt tanks for 10 years and the electronic control board for 3 years. The resin's clock is set by free chlorine: Dow's DOWEX water conditioning manual gives a standard gel cation resin about 10 years at under 0.2 ppm free chlorine and about 6 years at 1 ppm. So a control valve on a seal kit is a repair at any age, fading capacity on a chlorinated feed is a resin change, and only a cracked tank past its 10-year warranty is a reason to replace the whole softener.

## Fact sheet

- **Answer:** No maker document read here prints a softener lifespan, so judge by part, not age. Pentair warrants Fleck control valves for 5 years and PolyGlass fiberglass tanks of 13 inches or less for 10; Whirlpool warrants WHES40 tanks for 10 years and the control board for 3. Dow's water conditioning manual gives a standard gel cation resin about 10 years at under 0.2 ppm free chlorine and about 6 years at 1 ppm.
- **Basis:** Maker warranty periods as printed by Pentair (Residential Filtration Warranty) and Whirlpool (WHES40/WHES44 manual 7392319 Rev G), plus the free chlorine limits and resin life example in Dow's DOWEX Water Conditioning Manual, Table 19 and section 9.6.2.
- **Assumptions:** A conventional salt-regenerated cation exchange softener with a separate control valve, resin tank and brine tank, such as a Fleck 5600SXT or a Whirlpool WHES40 cabinet unit; Standard-crosslink gel resin, which is what most residential units ship with; higher-crosslink resin tolerates more chlorine per Dow's table; Feed water within the maker's operating conditions (Whirlpool: not over 125 psi or 120 F)
- **Method:** Warranty tables, troubleshooting rows and resin chemistry read from the Pentair, Whirlpool, Dow, Purolite and ResinTech documents in Sources on 2026-10-10; nothing was tested. Dealer lifespan figures were found and deliberately left out because no maker document supports them. Clack, GE Appliances and Morton warranty text could not be read this session, so none is cited.

If the softener is twelve years old and still makes soft water, this page will probably send you to a seal kit, not a new unit; if the resin tank is cracked, skip to the [best softener for city water review](/water/reviews/best-water-softener-city-water/) now.

## Which part fails first?

A salt softener is four parts with four different clocks: the control valve, the resin, the resin tank with its riser tube, and the brine tank. The wear parts live in the valve, and both makers' manuals list them as service items rather than reasons to replace.

| Part | What wears it | Warranty as printed | Repair or replace |
|---|---|---|---|
| Control valve seals, piston, rotor, injector | Every regeneration cycles them; grit and high pressure | Pentair: Fleck valve 5 years; Whirlpool: 1 year full, control board 3 years | Repair: seal, piston and injector kits on the [Fleck 5600SXT parts page](/water/parts/fleck-5600sxt-parts-and-part-numbers/) and the [Whirlpool WHES30 and WHES40 parts page](/water/parts/whirlpool-whes30-whes40-parts/) |
| Resin bed | Free chlorine de-crosslinks the beads (Dow); iron fouls them | Pentair WaterTrust Pro: resin media 5 years; Whirlpool and Fleck: not listed separately | Clean first, then replace the resin, not the unit: [resin replacement page](/water/parts/water-softener-resin-replacement-crosslink-and-how-much/) |
| Resin tank and riser tube | Pressure cycling; a cracked riser sends beads into the house | Pentair: fiberglass tank 13 in or less 10 years, 14 in or larger 5 years; Whirlpool: 10 years | Replace the tank assembly (Whirlpool manual) |
| Brine tank, float, grid | Salt mush, a cracked wall, a stuck float | Pentair: brine tanks and cabinets 5 years; Whirlpool: 10 years | Clean every three years (Pentair); replace only a cracked tank |

The injector is the small nozzle and throat that pulls brine into the resin tank, and Pentair's 5600SXT manual lists a plugged injector screen before any valve fault in its hard-water row. The valve itself rarely fails whole: Pentair's row for an internal leak says to replace the seals, spacers and piston, and names Piston Kit 60102-71 and Seal and Spacer Kit 60125 in its parts list.

## How long does the resin last?

Resin is the part with a real wear mechanism, and Dow prints it. Chemical attack by an oxidant such as chlorine destroys the polymer crosslinks of a cation resin, which raises its water retention and lowers its exchange capacity: the bed swells and softens less water per regeneration, year by year.

Dow's Table 19 gives the recommended maximum free chlorine in the feed, in ppm as Cl2, by feed temperature and resin type.

| Feed temperature | Standard crosslink gel | High crosslink gel | Macroporous |
|---|---|---|---|
| 40 to 50 F | 0.3 ppm | 0.5 ppm | 1.0 ppm |
| 50 to 60 F | 0.2 ppm | 0.3 ppm | 0.8 ppm |
| 60 to 70 F | 0.1 ppm | 0.2 ppm | 0.6 ppm |
| 70 to 85 F | under 0.1 ppm | 0.1 ppm | 0.5 ppm |
| Above 85 F | absent | under 0.1 ppm | under 0.5 ppm |

Dow's worked example is the only printed life figure found for this page: a standard gel cation resin at 40 to 50 F with a 10-year lifetime at under 0.2 ppm free chlorine drops to about 6 years if the chlorine rises five times, to 1 ppm. Dow adds that resin life cannot be predicted accurately once other factors are counted, so the table is a guideline, not a promise.

City water commonly carries more free chlorine than the standard-gel column allows, which is why the [chlorine and chloramine guide](/water/guides/chlorine-chloramine-city-water/) and the [install order guide](/water/guides/water-treatment-install-order-sediment-softener-carbon-uv/) put a carbon stage ahead of the softener. Purolite's C100 bulletin says the resin resists oxidants such as chlorine better than less crosslinked resins, and ResinTech's CG8 sheet describes 8 percent crosslink gel with good oxidative stability, but neither prints a ppm limit or a years figure.

## What do the warranties cover, and what do they not?

A warranty period is a coverage promise, not a lifespan. Pentair's residential filtration warranty and Whirlpool's WHES40 manual are the two documents read for this page that print years; Fleck's product page repeats Pentair's "5-year valve warranty/10-year tank warranty" line.

| Maker and document | Control valve | Tanks | Other terms as printed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pentair, Residential Filtration Warranty | Fleck 5 years; Autotrol 5; Autotrol Magnum 3; Fleck 2510 AIO and AquaMatic 1 | PolyGlass fiberglass 13 in or less 10 years, 14 in or larger 5 years; brine tanks and cabinets 5 years | Parts and accessories 1 year; a replacement part carries the remainder of the original warranty or 30 days |
| Pentair, WaterTrust Pro Series | 10 years (tanks, valves, bypass) | 10 years | Electronics, meter turbine and resin media 5 years; seals, wear parts and filtration media 2 years |
| Whirlpool, WHES40 and WHES44 manual 7392319 Rev G | 1 year full parts and labor; electronic control board 3 years | Salt storage tank and fiberglass resin tank 10 years | Labor not covered after year 1; feed not over 125 psi or 120 F; registered use of the WHE-WSC cleaner extends the 1-year full warranty to 5 years |

Two gaps are worth stating. Whirlpool and Fleck print no separate warranty for the resin itself, and no Clack, GE Appliances or Morton warranty text could be read this session, so none appears here.

## Which symptom points to which part?

Every row below comes from the Pentair 5600SXT or Whirlpool WHES40 troubleshooting table, or from Dow's resin chemistry, and each has a page on this site that walks the check.

| Symptom | Likely part | Repair or replace | Where it is documented |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hard water, salt in the tank but the level never drops | Salt bridge | Repair: break the crust, regenerate after 2 hours (Pentair) | [Salt bridge diagnosis](/water/guides/water-softener-not-using-salt-salt-bridge-diagnosis/) |
| Salt tank full of water, water running to drain | Plugged nozzle and venturi, drain flow control, or brine float | Repair: clean the injector, flow control and float (Whirlpool, Pentair) | [Too much water in the brine tank](/water/guides/water-softener-brine-tank-too-much-water/) |
| Hard water with settings right, injector clean and brine normal | Internal valve leak: seals, spacers, piston or rotor | Repair with a seal or piston kit (Pentair kits 60125 and 60102-71; Whirlpool rotor and seals) | [Fleck 5600SXT parts](/water/parts/fleck-5600sxt-parts-and-part-numbers/) |
| Iron staining in softened water | Fouled resin bed | Repair: clean the bed with resin cleaner first (Whirlpool) | [Best resin cleaner review](/water/reviews/best-water-softener-resin-cleaner/) |
| Capacity fading year on year on a chlorinated feed | De-crosslinked resin (Dow section 9.7) | Replace the resin, keep the valve and tank | [Resin replacement and crosslink](/water/parts/water-softener-resin-replacement-crosslink-and-how-much/) |
| Resin beads in faucet aerators or toilet fill valves | Cracked distributor or riser tube | Replace the resin tank assembly (Whirlpool) | [Whirlpool WHES30 and WHES40 parts](/water/parts/whirlpool-whes30-whes40-parts/) |
| Brine tank leaking from the wall | Cracked salt storage tank | Replace the salt tank (Whirlpool); warranted 10 years Whirlpool, 5 years Pentair | Pentair warranty, Whirlpool manual |
| Dead display, no regeneration, motor clicking | Electronic control board, or motor and switch | Replace the board or motor (Whirlpool; board warranted 3 years) | Whirlpool manual troubleshooting |

Whirlpool's manual also lists high water pressure, over 100 psi in the daytime, as a cause of inner valve failure and tells the owner to add a pressure reducing valve. A valve that keeps eating seal kits may be a pressure problem, not an age problem.

**Before you buy anything**

Do not replace a softener because of its age or a dealer's lifespan figure. Test hardness at a softened tap the day after a manual regeneration: if the water is soft, the resin and valve still work and the fault you noticed is a wear part. If the water stays hard with the injector clean and the brine level normal, read the hardness, the feed chlorine and the resin volume before deciding between a resin change and a new unit, because the [softener size calculator](/water/calculators/water-softener-size-calculator/) decides the grain capacity either way. If the answer is a new unit, the [softener deal check](/water/guides/water-softener-black-friday-prime-day-deal-check/) covers when the price moves.

## What should you do first?

1. Run a manual regeneration and test hardness at a softened tap the next day; soft water means the valve and resin are alive.
2. If the salt level is not dropping, probe the tank for a bridge before touching the valve.
3. If the brine tank is overfull, pull and clean the injector screen, nozzle and throat and check the drain flow control.
4. If the water is hard with brine draw normal, order the seal and piston kit for your valve rather than a new softener.
5. If capacity has faded over years on city water, measure the feed's free chlorine against Dow's Table 19 and replace the resin, adding a carbon stage ahead of it.
6. Replace the whole unit only for a cracked resin tank or riser past its 10-year tank warranty, or when a parts-obsolete valve costs more than the [city-water review's](/water/reviews/best-water-softener-city-water/) picks.

## Frequently asked questions

### How many years does a water softener last?

No softener maker or university extension document read for this page prints an average service life, so any figure such as 10 to 15 years comes from dealers, not documents. The checkable numbers are warranties: Pentair covers Fleck valves for 5 years and small fiberglass tanks for 10, and Whirlpool covers WHES40 tanks for 10 years. The resin's life depends on chlorine, not the calendar.

### How long does water softener resin last?

Dow's DOWEX Water Conditioning Manual gives the only printed example: a standard gel cation resin with a 10-year lifetime at under 0.2 ppm free chlorine drops to about 6 years if free chlorine rises to 1 ppm. Dow adds that life cannot be predicted accurately once other factors are counted. Purolite and ResinTech data sheets describe oxidative stability but print no years figure.

### What usually fails first on a water softener?

The wear parts inside the control valve. Pentair's 5600SXT manual lists seals, spacers and the piston for an internal valve leak and a plugged injector screen for hard water; Whirlpool's WHES40 manual lists the rotor and seals, the nozzle and venturi, and the brine float. All of these are repairs. A cracked tank or a cracked riser tube is the fault that moves a unit from repair to replace.

### Should I repair or replace a 15-year-old water softener?

Decide by the part, not the age. A valve that needs seals, a piston or an injector is a repair at any age, because those kits sit in the Pentair and Whirlpool parts lists. Resin that has lost capacity on a chlorinated feed is a resin change, not a new unit. Replace the whole softener when the resin tank or riser tube has cracked past its 10-year warranty.

### Does chlorine in city water shorten a water softener's life?

It shortens the resin's life, and Dow prints the mechanism: chemical attack by oxidants destroys the polymer crosslinks, which raises water retention and lowers exchange capacity. Dow's Table 19 sets 0.3 ppm free chlorine as the maximum for standard gel resin at 40 to 50 F and less at warmer temperatures, which is why a carbon stage ahead of the softener is the usual answer.
