## What does the taste tell you?

Total dissolved solids (TDS) is everything dissolved in the water, in mg/L, which a handheld meter reports as ppm. Rejection is the share of feed TDS the membrane keeps out, and Nebraska Extension G1490 defines it as the percentage of a contaminant not allowed through the membrane.

## What does the number mean?

EPA's WaterSense performance overview states that the WaterSense specification requires a minimum TDS reduction of 75 percent, the same baseline NSF/ANSI 58 sets. So a certified system leaves at most 25 percent of the feed TDS in the product water, and most leave far less.

APEC's FAQ states that its high-rejection membranes deliver 90 to 99 percent rejection and that most other membranes deliver 70 to 90 percent. Tap water at 300 ppm and RO water at 15 ppm is 95 percent rejection; the same tap at 90 ppm out is 70 percent, and the membrane is done.

EPA's secondary drinking water standards list TDS at 500 mg/L, and EPA states that it does not enforce these secondary maximum contaminant levels. Nebraska Extension G1490 adds a cause of biofilm nobody expects: on unchlorinated feed water, a carbon pre-filter can encourage microbial growth on the membrane surface. On a well with no chlorine, a sulfur smell that returns after every sanitizing cycle is that, and the fix is upstream disinfection, not another bottle of bleach.

**Before you buy anything**

Do not order a membrane, a post-filter or a mineral cartridge until you have two TDS readings from one meter, the kitchen tap and the RO faucet, on the same day. The HM Digital TDS-3 reads 0 to 9,990 ppm at plus or minus 2 percent in the 0 to 5,000 ppm band per HM Digital, which covers any tap. Its limit is the one to know: it reads conductivity, so it will confirm or clear the membrane, and it will tell you nothing about a chlorine or rotten-egg taste. ## What should you do first?

1. Name the taste from the first table and run the confirm test for that row before buying anything.
2. Read tap and RO TDS on one meter the same day; divide the difference by the tap reading for the rejection rate, and compare it with your maker's published figure.
3. On a new install, run and discard the number of tank-fulls the manual states before judging the taste at all.
4. Smell the kitchen tap as well as the RO faucet: sulfur at both is a feed-water problem; sulfur at the RO faucet alone is a sanitizing job per the manual.
