## Short answer

A water filter bought on Prime Big Deal Days (October 6-7, 2026, per Amazon's announcement) or on Black Friday is a deal only if two things hold. First, the cartridge is certified to the NSF/ANSI standard for the contaminant you actually have: NSF/ANSI 42 covers aesthetic effects such as chlorine taste, NSF/ANSI 53 covers specific health-related contaminants such as lead and PFOA/PFOS, and NSF/ANSI 58 covers reverse osmosis systems. Second, that certification appears in the certifier's own database (NSF, WQA or IAPMO R&T), not only in the seller's bullet point. The Save badge is arithmetic against a reference: Amazon defines its struck-through List Price as the manufacturer's suggested retail price and its Typical Price as the 90-day median customers paid, so the denominator decides the percentage. Check the standard, check the listing, then divide the card price by the maker's rated gallons (Brita Elite 120, PUR PLUS 40, ZeroWater 15) to see what the sale really costs per gallon.

## Fact sheet

- **Answer:** A discounted water filter is a deal only if it is certified to the NSF/ANSI standard for the contaminant you have (42 for chlorine taste, 53 for lead and PFOA/PFOS, 58 for reverse osmosis) and the model appears in the certifier's own database. Prime Big Deal Days run October 6-7, 2026. The Save badge's denominator is a List Price or a 90-day median, so the percentage is only as honest as that reference.
- **Basis:** NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 401 scope statements from NSF's standards sheet; Amazon's own definitions of List Price and Typical Price; 16 CFR 233.1 on former price comparisons; maker-published cartridge capacities from Brita, PUR, Aquasana, Express Water (CuZn), iSpring and GE
- **Assumptions:** The reader is buying a pitcher, faucet, refrigerator, under-sink or whole-house cartridge filter during Prime Big Deal Days or the Black Friday period; The discount shown is Amazon's own Save badge against a struck-through reference price; The reader has a water quality report or a test result, or at least knows whether the goal is taste or a named contaminant
- **Method:** Spec comparison only. Event dates, reference-price definitions, certifier search fields, standard scopes, capacities and shelf-life statements were read from the documents named beside them on 2026-10-02. No filter was tested, no price history was compiled, and no price appears in this copy: the live cards carry Amazon's current figures with their time stamp.

Do not buy a water filter because the struck-through price looks big; buy it because the NSF/ANSI number on its certificate matches the contaminant in your water report. If it does not, the discount is on the wrong unit.

The price and any saving shown on each card above are Amazon's live figures with their own time stamp; nothing in this copy states a price.

## Is the discount real?

The percentage on a deal badge is only as honest as the number it is measured against. Amazon's seller guidance defines a List Price as "the suggested retail price of a product as provided by a manufacturer, supplier, or seller", sometimes called MSRP, and a Typical Price as the median price customers paid in the Amazon store over the past 90 days, excluding limited-time promotions. Both appear as strikethroughs.

The FTC's Guides Against Deceptive Pricing, 16 CFR 233.1, say a former price is a legitimate comparison only if it is "the actual, bona fide price at which the article was offered to the public on a regular basis for a reasonably substantial period of time", and that an artificially inflated former price set up to enable a large reduction makes the bargain a false one.

A high MSRP produces a large percentage without a low price; a Typical Price reference is anchored to what people actually paid.

Prime Big Deal Days 2026 run October 6-7 from 12:01 a.m. PDT, per Amazon's announcement, which says nothing about Black Friday or Cyber Monday; no Amazon Black Friday window had been announced when this page was written. Black Friday itself falls on 27 November 2026, the Friday after US Thanksgiving.

## Which standard does your filter need?

NSF's own standards sheet defines the three numbers that decide whether a cartridge fits your problem. NSF/ANSI 42 "establishes minimum requirements for systems designed to reduce non-health-related contaminants". NSF/ANSI 53 does the same "for systems designed to reduce specific health-related contaminants". NSF/ANSI 401 covers up to 15 emerging compounds detected at trace levels. Reverse osmosis systems are certified under NSF/ANSI 58 instead; the [standards guide](/water/guides/nsf-ansi-water-filter-standards-explained/) walks through each.

| What you want fixed | Standard the certificate must name | Where to confirm it |
|---|---|---|
| Chlorine taste and odor on city water | NSF/ANSI 42 | NSF's DWTU search by manufacturer or model, product standard NSF 42 |
| Lead, from a service line or old solder | NSF/ANSI 53, lead reduction claim | NSF's search filtered to the lead reduction claim, or WQA's directory by model |
| PFOA/PFOS from a utility notice | NSF/ANSI 53 with a PFOA/PFOS claim (Aquasana prints it as P473) | The maker's performance data sheet naming the certifier, then the certifier's listing |
| TDS, arsenic, nitrate, fluoride | NSF/ANSI 58 (reverse osmosis) | NSF's search with product standard NSF 58; see the [RO deal check](/water/guides/reverse-osmosis-black-friday-prime-day-deal-check/) |
| Nothing specific, "just better water" | Any 42 listing | Buy the lowest cost per gallon, not the biggest badge |

The trap on deal days is the 42-only cartridge sold on a lead or PFAS worry. The CuZn UC-200 is an honest example: Express Water lists NSF/ANSI 42 and 372 and nothing else, which makes it a fine chlorine-taste unit and the wrong buy for a lead goal at any discount. The iSpring WGB32B page says its cartridges are tested by a third party to meet NSF/ANSI standards and prints no standard number at all.

Generic refrigerator filter multi-packs are the classic deal-day case. GE Appliances says genuine filters are certified to NSF/ANSI drinking water treatment standards, that counterfeits "falsely claim to meet NSF/ANSI Drinking Water Treatment standards", and that many "have been known to burst and/or leak". AHAM's Filter It Out campaign names the three certifiers (NSF International, WQA and IAPMO R&T) and warns that fakes may crack, leak or burst. Match the part on the [refrigerator filter by model guide](/water/guides/refrigerator-water-filter-by-model/), then search it in a certifier's database before the pack goes in the cart.

NSF's search takes a manufacturer name, a brand or model, a product standard and a reduction claim; WQA's directory takes manufacturer, brand or model and product standard. A model in neither, with no certifier named by the maker, is certified by a bullet point.

## What does a cartridge cost per gallon?

The sale price is one cartridge; the running cost is every cartridge after it. Fill in the card price and the maker's rated gallons:

cost per gallon = (card price / cartridges in the pack) / rated gallons per cartridge

| Filter | Maker's rated capacity per cartridge | Maker's interval | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brita Elite OB06 (2 pack) | 120 gallons | About 6 months | Brita FAQ and data sheet |
| Brita Standard | 40 gallons | About 2 months | Brita FAQ |
| PUR PLUS PPF951K (3 pack) | Up to 40 gallons | 2 months | PUR product page |
| ZeroWater 5-stage (2 pack) | 15 gallons | Not stated in gallons-per-day terms | Zero Technologies data sheet |
| Aquasana Claryum 3-Stage Max Flow | 800 gallons per set | Up to 6 months | Aquasana product page |
| CuZn UC-200 | 50,000 gallons | About 5 years | Express Water product page |
| iSpring WGB32B cartridges | Up to 100,000 gallons each | Up to 12 months | iSpring product page |
| GE refrigerator filters | 170 to 200 gallons, model dependent | Six months | GE Appliances support |

This ranking is the opposite of the badge ranking: a 15-gallon ZeroWater filter has to be far cheaper than a 120-gallon Brita Elite to match it per gallon, and a 50,000-gallon CuZn cartridge wins on running cost before any discount. The [cartridge life calculator](/water/calculators/water-filter-cartridge-life-calculator/) turns your household's daily draw into a replacement date.

## Can you stock up for a year?

Only where the maker prints a shelf life. Brita's FAQ says the shelf life of an unused Brita filter "is indefinite as long as its pouch is intact and sealed". PUR's PLUS filter page gives 40 gallons or 2 months of use and no storage statement. No shelf-life statement was found on the Aquasana, Express Water, iSpring, ZeroWater or GE pages read, so for those the honest stock-up is the count the maker's interval implies for twelve months.

## Buy it on sale or skip it?

| Your situation | On sale | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Water report shows lead or PFOA/PFOS, and the filter carries an NSF/ANSI 53 claim for it in a certifier's listing | Buy | The standard matches; the discount lowers a cost you already had |
| Same report, filter lists NSF/ANSI 42 only | Skip | The certificate does not cover the contaminant; see the [pitcher review](/water/reviews/best-water-filter-pitcher-nsf-53-lead-pfas/) |
| City water, chlorine taste only, no named contaminant | Buy the lowest cost per gallon | Any 42 listing does the job; the [under-sink review](/water/reviews/best-under-sink-water-filter-without-reverse-osmosis/) ranks them |
| Whole house, no standard number on the maker's page | Skip until the certifier search finds it | Capacity without a certificate is a claim; the [whole-house review](/water/reviews/best-whole-house-water-filter-city-water/) names the units that print one |
| Refrigerator filter, brand not in NSF, WQA or IAPMO listings | Skip | GE and AHAM both describe counterfeits that leak or burst |
| Replacement cartridges for a unit you already own, same part number | Buy a year's count | The spec was decided when you bought the housing; only the shelf-life rule above limits the quantity |

**Before you add it to the cart**

Do not buy the filter before you have read your utility's water quality report or a lab result. The contaminant picks the NSF/ANSI number, the number picks the cartridge, and only then does the deal price matter. A filter certified to the wrong standard is not cheaper, it is a different product.

## What should you do first?

1. Pull your water quality report or test result and write down the one contaminant that worries you.
2. Match it to the standard in the table above: 42, 53 or 58.
3. Search the exact model in NSF's DWTU database or WQA's directory, or find the certifier named on the maker's data sheet.
4. Divide the card price by the pack count and the rated gallons, and compare that to the cartridge you use now.
5. Buy only the quantity the maker's interval and shelf-life statement support.

## The picks

- **Brita Elite replacement filter (OB06), 2 pack**: Pitcher owner who wants lead and PFOA/PFOS on a certificate (Brita data sheet: WQA certified to NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 401, IAPMO R&T to 53 for PFOA/PFOS; 120 gallons or about 6 months per filter; the listing is a 2 pack, so divide the card price by two before the per-gallon formula) Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MU7973W/?tag=ownerspec-20
- **PUR PLUS pitcher filter (PPF951K), 3 pack**: Existing PUR pitcher, wants the lead certification kept (PUR data sheet: certified to NSF/ANSI 53 for lead by WQA, 42 and 401 under a tested statement; PUR product page: up to 40 gallons or 2 months per filter; 3 pack) Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06WVDVDXB/?tag=ownerspec-20
- **ZeroWater 5-stage replacement filter, 2 pack**: Wants a PFOA/PFOS certificate and accepts a short filter life (Zero Technologies data sheet: IAPMO R&T to NSF/ANSI 42 and 53; 15 gallons rated life per filter, the shortest on this page, so the per-gallon formula matters most here) Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001CUQ1C8/?tag=ownerspec-20
- **Aquasana Claryum 3-Stage Max Flow (AQ-6300M-BN)**: Under-sink buyer who wants PFAS and lead on a certificate, no RO (Aquasana product page: WQA tested and certified to NSF/ANSI 42, 53 (includes P473) and 401; 800 gallons or up to 6 months per filter set; 0.72 gpm; dedicated faucet) Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FN9Y9JSP/?tag=ownerspec-20
- **CuZn UC-200 under-sink filter, 5 year**: City water, chlorine taste only, wants the fewest cartridge changes (Express Water product page: 50,000 gallons or about 5 years per cartridge; NSF/ANSI 42 and 372 only, no 53, so it is the wrong buy for a lead or PFAS goal however deep the discount) Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000923524/?tag=ownerspec-20
- **iSpring WGB32B whole-house system**: Whole-house cartridges for a house that peaks above 8 GPM (iSpring product page: up to 100,000 gallons or up to 12 months per cartridge, up to 15 GPM; the page says tested by a third party to meet NSF/ANSI standards and prints no standard number, so check the certifier's database before paying) Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008GNRMYK/?tag=ownerspec-20

## Frequently asked questions

### When are Prime Big Deal Days 2026 and has Amazon announced its Black Friday dates?

Amazon's announcement sets Prime Big Deal Days for October 6-7, 2026, starting October 6 at 12:01 a.m. PDT. That page says nothing about Black Friday or Cyber Monday, and no Amazon announcement of a Black Friday window was found while this page was written. Black Friday itself is the Friday after US Thanksgiving, 27 November 2026, a calendar date rather than an Amazon event window.

### What does the struck-through price on an Amazon water filter deal actually mean?

Amazon's seller guidance defines a List Price as the suggested retail price supplied by a manufacturer, supplier or seller, sometimes called MSRP, and a Typical Price as the median price customers paid in the Amazon store over the past 90 days excluding limited-time promotions. Both display as strikethroughs. The Save percentage is computed against that reference, so a high MSRP produces a large percentage without a low price.

### How do I check that a discounted filter is really NSF certified?

Search the certifier, not the seller. NSF's certified drinking water treatment unit search takes a manufacturer name, a brand or model, a product standard such as NSF 42, 53 or 58, and a reduction claim such as lead reduction. WQA's directory offers manufacturer, brand or model and product standard fields. A model in neither, with no certifier named by the maker, is certified by a bullet point only.

### Is a refrigerator filter multi-pack on Prime Day a safe stock-up?

Only from the appliance maker or a brand you can find in a certifier's listing. GE Appliances says genuine filters are certified to NSF/ANSI drinking water treatment standards and that counterfeits falsely claim them, carry fraudulent labels, and have been known to burst or leak. Divide the pack price by the pack count and by GE's 170 to 200 gallons per filter before comparing it with the genuine part.

### Can I buy a year of pitcher filters on sale and store them?

Brita is the one maker read for this page that prints a shelf life: an unused Brita filter keeps indefinitely as long as its pouch is intact and sealed. PUR's PLUS filter page gives 40 gallons or 2 months of use and no storage statement, and no shelf life was found for the other filters here. Where the maker prints none, buy only the year's count the interval implies.
