## Short answer

A water softener on sale is a good deal only if its grain capacity fits the house, so size
it before you read the discount. The formula: hardness in grains per gallon, plus 5 grains
for every 1 ppm of clear-water iron (the Whirlpool WHES40 manual and Pentair manual 37297
both print that correction), times people, times 75 gallons per person per day (Penn State
Extension's sizing figure), times the days you want between regenerations. A 4-person house
at 15 gpg uses 4,500 grains a day and needs about 31,500 grains of usable capacity for a
7-day cycle. Usable is the catch: the number on the box is the capacity at the maximum salt
dose. Pentair's 5600SXT data sheet rates a 1.0 cubic foot resin bed at 35,400 grains at 15 lb
of salt but 11,900 grains at 3 lb. Prime Big Deal Days run October 6-7, 2026 per Amazon;
Black Friday is November 27, and Amazon has not announced its Black Friday window.

## Fact sheet

- **Answer:** A softener on sale is a deal only if its grain capacity fits the house: hardness in gpg (plus 5 grains per 1 ppm of clear-water iron, per the Whirlpool and Pentair manuals) x people x 75 gallons per day x days between regenerations. The box capacity is the maximum-salt-dose figure: Pentair rates a 1.0 cu ft bed at 35,400 grains at 15 lb of salt and 11,900 at 3 lb.
- **Basis:** Amazon's List Price and Typical Price definitions, 16 CFR 233.1 on former-price comparisons, and the capacity-per-salt-dose tables printed in the Pentair 5600SXT data sheet (4005293) and the Whirlpool WHES40 manual (7345469).
- **Assumptions:** Water use is 75 gallons per person per day, the figure Penn State Extension uses in its sizing example; Iron is clear-water (ferrous) iron and sits under the softener maker's published ceiling; red (oxidized) iron needs a filter upstream per Penn State Extension and Pentair; Prime Big Deal Days are October 6-7, 2026 per Amazon; Black Friday is Friday November 27, 2026 by the calendar, and Amazon had not announced a Black Friday window when this page was checked
- **Method:** Spec comparison of maker-published capacity tables and Amazon's own pricing definitions, read on 2026-10-02. Nothing was bench-tested. Prices and savings on the product cards are Amazon's live figures and are never written into this page.

Do not buy a softener because it is marked down; buy it because its grain capacity fits your hardness times your household, and if it does not, the discount is on the wrong unit.

The price and any "Save" figure on each card above are Amazon's live numbers with Amazon's time stamp; this page states no price of its own.

## Is the discount real?

The percentage depends on the denominator. Amazon's seller guidance defines the struck-through List Price as the suggested retail price from a manufacturer, supplier or seller, validated against sales in its store and external competitor prices. The same page defines a Typical Price as the median customers paid in Amazon's store over the past 90 days, excluding limited-time promotions.

A saving against a List Price nobody paid is a different claim from a saving against the 90-day median. The FTC's Guides Against Deceptive Pricing, 16 CFR 233.1, say a former-price comparison is legitimate only when the former price is the actual, bona fide price offered to the public on a regular basis for a reasonably substantial period; otherwise the bargain is a false one.

Amazon's announcement puts Prime Big Deal Days at October 6-7, 2026, 48 hours of deals for Prime members. Black Friday falls on Friday November 27, 2026 and Cyber Monday on November 30, by the calendar: as of 2 October, Amazon had not published a Black Friday deal window on any page this site could open.

## Which grain capacity fits your house?

Grain capacity is the amount of hardness, in grains, a resin bed removes between regenerations. The house decides it.

| Input | Where it comes from |
| --- | --- |
| Hardness in gpg | A test or the utility report; the [hardness unit converter](/water/calculators/water-hardness-unit-converter/) turns mg/L into gpg |
| Iron correction | Add 5 grains per 1 ppm of clear-water iron, per the Whirlpool 7345469 and Pentair 37297 manuals |
| People x 75 gal per day | Penn State Extension's sizing example uses 75 gallons per person per day |
| Days between regenerations | Your choice; Penn State's example lands at a 6-7 day cycle |

Multiply the four, or let the [water softener size calculator](/water/calculators/water-softener-size-calculator/) do it.

| Household | Daily grains | 7-day usable capacity |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 2 people, 10 gpg, no iron | 2 x 75 x 10 = 1,500 | 10,500 |
| 4 people, 15 gpg, no iron | 4 x 75 x 15 = 4,500 | 31,500 |
| 4 people, 15 gpg, 2 ppm iron (25 compensated) | 4 x 75 x 25 = 7,500 | 52,500 |
| 6 people, 20 gpg, no iron | 6 x 75 x 20 = 9,000 | 63,000 |

Iron also has a ceiling. Whirlpool rates the WHES40 at a maximum of 10 ppm clear-water iron, substantiated by WQA test data, and footnotes that Wisconsin requires additional treatment above 5 ppm. Penn State Extension says oxidized red iron clogs the resin and should be filtered first; Pentair's 5600SXT manual puts sediment, neutralizer and iron equipment upstream of the softener. If the report shows iron, read the [well water softener review](/water/reviews/best-water-softener-for-well-water/) first.

## What does the salt dose do to the capacity?

The grain figure on the box is the rating at the maximum salt dose, and the same resin bed delivers roughly a third of it at the minimum dose. The maker tables print this.

| Unit (maker document) | Resin | Minimum dose | Middle dose | Maximum dose |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Pentair 5600SXT VT-11-01 (data sheet 4005293) | 1.0 cu ft | 11,900 grains at 3.0 lb | 31,100 at 9.0 lb | 35,400 at 15.0 lb |
| Pentair 5600SXT VT-17-01 | 1.5 cu ft | 17,900 at 4.5 lb | 46,600 at 13.5 lb | 53,100 at 22.5 lb |
| Pentair 5600SXT VT-23-01 | 2.0 cu ft | 23,900 at 6.0 lb | 62,200 at 18.0 lb | 70,700 at 30.0 lb |
| Whirlpool WHES40 (manual 7345469) | 1.14 cu ft | 11,900 at 2.4 lb | 31,600 at 9.0 lb | 40,000 at 15.5 lb |

Salt efficiency is grains of hardness removed per pound of salt. Pentair rates the VT-11-01 at 4,400 grains per pound at the 3.0 lb dose; Whirlpool rates the WHES40 at 4,958 at 2.4 lb. Both manuals say the rating is valid only at the minimum dose, and both print the same floor for an efficiency-rated softener: not less than 3,350 grains per pound of salt, measured by the laboratory tests in NSF/ANSI Standard 44.

This is the trap a sale price tempts you to skip. A 64,000-grain unit run at an efficient dose delivers far less than 64,000 grains, so read the dose table, or, where a maker publishes none, take the box number as a maximum. The Aquasure Harmony series in the picks publishes no resin volume, efficiency or NSF/ANSI 44 status, so no discount makes those units comparable on efficiency.

## Does the valve have a parts supply?

A softener is a control valve on a tank, and the valve is what fails. The Fleck 5600SXT has a public parts list, on the [Fleck 5600SXT parts page](/water/parts/fleck-5600sxt-parts-and-part-numbers/); the AFWFilters 48K unit in the picks pairs that valve with 1.5 cu ft of 8% cross-linked resin, 12 gpm service flow and a 5-year valve and 10-year tank warranty, per the AFWFilters product page. For a proprietary head, find the maker's parts page before the sale ends.

## What will the salt cost after the sale?

The purchase price is one line; salt is every year after. Fill in from the maker's dose table:

- Salt per regeneration (lb) = resin cu ft x dose in lb per cu ft
- Regenerations per year = daily grains x 365 / usable capacity at that dose
- Pounds of salt per year = the two multiplied

The 4-person, 15 gpg house on the Pentair VT-11-01 at the 9.0 lb dose: 4,500 x 365 / 31,100 is about 53 regenerations and about 477 lb of salt a year. The [salt usage calculator](/water/calculators/water-softener-salt-usage-calculator/) runs it for any dose, and the [salt review](/water/reviews/best-water-softener-salt-pellets-crystals-potassium/) covers pellets, crystals and potassium chloride.

**Before you add it to the cart**

Get the hardness number first: it decides between a 32,000 and a 64,000-grain unit, and no discount survives the wrong one. Then read the listing for shipping and installation terms. AFWFilters says its 48K unit installs in 1-2 hours with basic plumbing skills, a DIY statement, not an included service.

## Buy it on sale or skip it?

| Your situation | Call |
| --- | --- |
| Tested hardness in gpg, sized with the formula, unit's usable capacity covers a 6-7 day cycle | Buy on sale |
| No hardness number yet | Skip; test first, the deal repeats in November |
| Iron above the maker's clear-water ceiling, or red water | Skip; an iron filter goes first |
| Unit publishes no dose table or efficiency and you care about salt use | Skip, or take the box figure as a maximum |
| Valve has no public parts list | Skip unless the maker's parts page is in hand |
| Capacity fits only at the maximum salt dose | Buy the next size up or accept the higher salt bill |

## What should you do first?

1. Get hardness in gpg and iron in ppm from a test or the utility report.
2. Run the formula: (gpg + 5 per ppm iron) x people x 75 x days.
3. Open the maker's dose table and read the usable capacity at the dose you will program.
4. Confirm the valve has a public parts list.
5. Compare the card's saving against the Typical Price, not only the List Price.

The [city water softener review](/water/reviews/best-water-softener-city-water/) compares the units on these same published specs.

## The picks

- **Aquasure Harmony AS-HS48D, 48,000 grains**: Mid-size household on hard city water, as picked on the city-water review (48,000 grains nominal, digital metered head; Aquasure publishes no resin volume, salt efficiency or NSF/ANSI 44 status, so the sale price cannot be judged on efficiency) Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07F175C2R/?tag=ownerspec-20
- **Aquasure Harmony AS-HS64D, 64,000 grains**: Large household or very hard water, highest nominal capacity here (64,000 grains nominal at the maximum salt dose, digital metered head; resin volume, efficiency and NSF/ANSI 44 status not published) Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07F1W1JBD/?tag=ownerspec-20
- **Aquasure Harmony 32,000 grains**: One or two people on moderately hard water; listing says 1-2 bathrooms (32,000 grains nominal per the listing title; same series as the 48K and 64K, with the same unpublished resin volume, efficiency and certification) Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07F18VG8L/?tag=ownerspec-20
- **AFWFilters 48K Fleck 5600SXT with 8% crosslink resin**: Wants a valve with a public parts list and a printed resin volume (AFWFilters product page: 1.5 cu ft of 8% cross-linked resin, Fleck 5600SXT metered valve, 12 gpm service flow, brine tank holds about 250 lb of salt, 5-year valve and 10-year tank warranty) Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B5B6LQD2/?tag=ownerspec-20

## Frequently asked questions

### What does the struck-through List Price on an Amazon softener listing mean?

Amazon's seller guidance defines the List Price as the suggested retail price provided by a manufacturer, supplier or seller, which Amazon validates against sales in its own store and external competitor prices. A separate Typical Price is the median customers paid in Amazon's store over the past 90 days, excluding limited-time promotions. The percentage saving depends on which of those two is the denominator.

### How many grains does a household actually use per day?

Multiply hardness in grains per gallon by people and by daily use; Penn State Extension's sizing example uses 75 gallons per person per day. Four people at 15 gpg use 4 x 75 x 15, or 4,500 grains a day, so a 7-day cycle needs about 31,500 grains of usable capacity. Add 5 grains per 1 ppm of clear-water iron, as the Whirlpool and Pentair manuals instruct.

### Why is the capacity on the box not the capacity I will get?

The box prints the rating at the maximum salt dose. Pentair's 5600SXT data sheet rates the 1.0 cu ft VT-11-01 at 35,400 grains at 15.0 lb of salt, 31,100 at 9.0 lb and 11,900 at 3.0 lb. Whirlpool's WHES40 manual shows the same pattern: 40,000 grains at 15.5 lb and 11,900 at 2.4 lb. Program a lower dose for salt efficiency and the usable capacity falls with it.

### What does an efficiency-rated softener have to deliver?

The Whirlpool WHES40 manual and Pentair manual 37297 both state that an efficiency-rated softener has a rated efficiency of not less than 3,350 grains of hardness exchanged per pound of salt, measured by the laboratory tests in NSF/ANSI Standard 44, and that the rating is valid only at the minimum salt dose. Whirlpool adds that operational efficiency is typically less than the rated figure.

### Does a water softener handle iron in well water?

Only clear-water iron, and only up to the maker's ceiling. Whirlpool rates the WHES40 at a maximum of 10 ppm clear-water iron, substantiated by WQA test data, with a footnote that Wisconsin requires additional treatment above 5 ppm. Penn State Extension says oxidized red iron clogs the resin and should be filtered first, and Pentair's 5600SXT manual puts iron filters upstream of the softener.
