Short answer
A standard under-sink reverse osmosis storage tank is a 4 gallon nominal tank on a 1/4 in NPT stem, and four current models fit: the iSpring T32M, the APEC TANK-4, Express Water’s RO132-TNK and the GWS PA-E RO-132, which is 4.8 gallons nominal. Nominal is not usable: APEC’s TANK-4 table gives 1.9 gallons usable at 20 psi line pressure and 3.2 gallons at 60 psi, and iSpring rates the T32M at up to 3.2 gallons holding. The spec that must match is the 1/4 in thread on the tank valve. The spec that differs by maker is the factory air precharge: 5 psi for APEC, 5 to 8 psi for GWS, 7 to 10 psi for iSpring, so an empty replacement is set to its own maker’s figure, not to a number copied from the old tank. The 14 gallon APEC TANK-14 uses a 3/4 in thread and does not fit a 1/4 in valve. No maker publishes a service life for the tank.

Which tank fits a standard under-sink RO system?
Thread and capacity decide fit, not brand: APEC’s ROES-50 page lists its stock tank at 4 gallons and 11 x 11 x 15 in, the footprint of the TANK-4 and the T32M , and every tank below threads onto the same 1/4 in valve. The figures are the makers’ published specifications, read 2026-09-13; nothing was tested.

The 1/4 in class stops at 5.5 gallons; APEC’s 14 gallon tank moves to a 3/4 in stem with its own valve. The RO GPD and tank size calculator says whether your daily draw needs it.

On a same-thread swap the old valve moves to the new tank; replace it only when the quick-connect collet is damaged.
What precharge should the new tank carry?
The precharge is the air pressure behind the bladder in an empty tank: 5 psi on APEC’s TANK-4 and TANK-14, 0.3 to 0.5 bar (5 to 8 psi) on the GWS sheet, 7 to 10 psi on iSpring’s T32M and T55M. Express Water prints 10 psi only as a maximum, not a shipped setting.
No maker document in the Sources list describes how to check or reset that charge, so this page prints no procedure. The figures still settle the diagnosis: a tank that stays heavy while the faucet trickles, and reads well under its precharge once drained, has lost its air charge; one already at that figure points back at the membrane.
How do you replace the tank?
APEC’s tank replacement PDF (V2.1) gives the sequence; it is the same job on any 1/4 in tank.
- Shut off the feed water and open the RO faucet until the old tank is drained.
- Close the tank ball valve.
- Press in and hold the quick-connect collet ring, then pull the tubing out.
- Unscrew the valve from the old stem, counterclockwise.
- Wrap the new stem with Teflon tape and screw the valve back on.
- Reconnect, open the feed, let the tank fill, and drain the first tankful.
No maker publishes a service life for the tank: the trigger is a lost air charge or a leak at the stem, not a calendar.
Which tank should you buy, and who should skip it?
The iSpring T32M carries a written NSF/ANSI 61 claim on the maker’s page, valve included. Skip it if you prefer a narrow precharge window: 7 to 10 psi is the widest range here.
The APEC TANK-4 has the easiest 5 psi setpoint to hit, and is the tank APEC’s usable-gallon table describes. Skip it for a standard number: CE approved only, no NSF number, separate valve.
The Express Water RO132-TNK ships with its quick-connect valve and the same 3.2 gallon figure as the T32M. It lacks a published setpoint, a factory figure, and a weight spec.
The PA-E RO-132 is the largest of the 1/4 in class at 4.8 gallons nominal, listed on Amazon under the PAE reseller badge, not GWS’s name. GWS publishes no usable-gallon figure and no per-SKU certification.
Gauge first, tank second
Every figure above is a maker’s published specification. No maker publishes a service life or a check procedure for the air charge, so gauge the drained tank before it goes in the cart.
At the maker’s precharge with the faucet still trickling, the tank is not the fault.
Well under it, buy the T32M for the written NSF/ANSI 61 claim or the TANK-4 for the 5 psi setpoint, and keep the old valve.

How much of a 4 gallon RO tank can you actually use?
Less than 4 gallons, because the air side of the bladder takes part of the volume. APEC's TANK-4 table gives 1.9 gallons usable at 20 psi line pressure, 3.2 gallons at 60 psi and 3.42 gallons at 70 psi. iSpring rates the T32M at up to 3.2 gallons holding and the T55M at 4.0 gallons holding.
What factory precharge should a new RO tank have?
The maker's own figure, which is not the same across brands. APEC states 5 psi for the TANK-4 and the TANK-14, the GWS spec sheet states 0.3 to 0.5 bar, which it converts to 5 to 8 psi, and iSpring states 7 to 10 psi for the T32M and T55M. Does a bigger tank make more RO water per day?
No. Tank size changes how many gallons you can draw before the faucet slows and how long the refill takes; the membrane's rated output depends on feed pressure and temperature. APEC's TANK-14 stores 6.1 to 10.7 usable gallons against the TANK-4's 1.9 to 3.42, over the same 20 to 70 psi, without changing the system's GPD.
How do you replace an RO storage tank?
APEC's replacement instructions: shut the feed water, drain the tank through the RO faucet, close the tank ball valve, press the quick-connect collet ring in and pull the tubing out, unscrew the valve counterclockwise, wrap the new tank's threaded stem with Teflon tape, screw the valve back on, reconnect, refill, and drain the first full tank before drinking from the second.
