Short answer

The Whirlpool WHES30, WHES33, WHES40 and WHES44 share one valve, so most parts carry one number across all four. The current manuals (7392319 Rev G for the WHES40/44, 7392301 Rev H for the WHES30/33) list the rotor and valve seal kit as 7129716, which supersedes 7092163, the brine valve assembly as 7381180, the motor, cam and gear kit as 7397864 and the bypass valve as 7370286. The nozzle and venturi kit is the part that differs: 7398705 fits the WHES40 and WHES44, 7398674 fits the WHES30 and WHES33. Resin volume is 0.82 cu ft in the WHES30, 0.88 in the WHES33, 1.14 in the WHES40 and 1.23 in the WHES44, refilled from 1 cu ft bags of part 0502272. Err1, Err3 and Err4 share one cause list in the troubleshooting table (harness, switch, high valve torque, motor); Err5 alone means the control board, 7335163 on the WHES40/44 and 7335155 on the WHES30/33. The WHES40E is the WHES40 in the parts list; the control shows model code L40P.

What fits

  1. Rotor seal, venturi seal and O-rings, all four models

    SWEthSU 7129716 seal kit

1 kit; replaces 7129716 and the superseded 7092163; fits the 3/4 in 5-bolt valve cover, not the 1 in 8-bolt cover; aftermarket

  2. Aftermarket venturi when the OEM kit is not in stock

    Suifaqi nozzle and venturi assembly

    1 assembly, 3.52 oz; listing names WHES30, WHES33, WHES40 and WHES44; cross-references 7187065, 7238450 and WS15X10027, not the current 7398705 or 7398674

The number people order first, 7129716 , is the seal kit, not the nozzle and venturi: the venturi is 7398705 or 7398674 depending on which tank you own, and the two do not swap.

Which parts fit the WHES30 and WHES40?

Every number below comes from the two current manuals: 7392319 Rev G for the WHES40/44 and 7392301 Rev H for the WHES30/33, both current for units built from 2023. An older unit uses an earlier revision; check the sticker before ordering a control board.

The WHES40 spec table sets the working window at 20 to 125 psi and 40 to 120 F, with a 3 gpm minimum supply, 7.6 gpm rated service flow at 14.7 psig drop and 2.0 gpm maximum drain flow; salt storage is 200 lb (WHES40/44) or 175 lb (WHES30/33). Certification is to NSF/ANSI 44, NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 and CSA B483.1.

Capacity is a salt-dose table: the WHES40 is rated 17,300 grains at 3.4 lb of salt, 31,600 at 9.0 lb and 40,000 at 15.5 lb. The manual adds 5 grains to the hardness setting per 1 ppm of clear-water iron, within its 10 ppm iron and 125 gpg hardness limits. No hardness number yet? The water softener size calculator and the well water test panel come first.

Both manuals list Err1, Err3 and Err4 in one troubleshooting row with the same four causes, cheapest fix first; only Err5 has its own row.

CodeCause, in the manual’s orderFix the manual gives
Err1, Err3 or Err41. Fault in the wiring harness or its connections to the position switchReplace the harness or reseat the connections
Err1, Err3 or Err42. Fault in the switchReplace the switch
Err1, Err3 or Err43. Fault in the valve causing high torqueReplace the rotor and seal (seal kit 7129716 , rotor and disc 7199232)
Err1, Err3 or Err44. Motor inoperativeReplace the motor (motor, cam and gear kit 7397864)
Err5Electronic control malfunctionReplace the control board (7335163 or 7335155)

To clear a code, the manual says to unplug the power supply, correct the problem, plug it back in and wait 8 minutes; the code returns if the fault remains.

What else fits the same valve?

Aftermarket sellers list both parts under older numbers from the shared GE and Whirlpool valve platform, so the cross-reference is the only way to match a listing to the manual.

AlternativeSame part? What the listing statesWhat differs from the OEM number
SWEthSU 7129716 seal kitYes, by cross-reference1 kit; replaces 7129716, 7092163, 7134224, WS35X10005; nominal inside diameter 0.75 in; fits the 3/4 in 5-bolt valve coverAftermarket, not Whirlpool. The listing excludes 1 in 8-bolt covers. 7092163 is the superseded number, and 7129704 appears in neither manual
Suifaqi nozzle and venturi assemblyCompatible, by the listing’s model list1 assembly, 3.52 oz; names WHES30, WHES33, WHES40, WHES44 and WHES48; replaces 7187065, 7214969, 7165704, 7238450, WS15X10027Cross-references legacy numbers, not the current 7398705 or 7398674, and does not state which tank size the nozzle is sized for. Buy the OEM kit if the softener has never drawn brine correctly

One seal kit fits all four models; the only fit check is the 5-bolt cover.

The venturi is different: Whirlpool gives the two model pairs different kits, and the listing covers both with one assembly.

How often do the venturi and brine well need attention?

Neither manual sets a calendar interval for the nozzle and venturi. The trigger is a regeneration that draws no brine, and the first step is cleaning: put the bypass valve in bypass, confirm the softener is in the soft water (service) cycle so there is no pressure at the nozzle, then unscrew the cap by hand and rinse the screen, nozzle and venturi. Only a nozzle that stays blocked, or a cracked seal, calls for kit 7398705 or 7398674 plus the seal kit.

The salt monitor flashes the low salt light at level 2 or below on the 0 to 8 brine well scale. If the light is off but hardness is back, push a broom handle straight into the salt: a hard object felt before the pencil mark reaches the rim is a salt bridge, broken up with the handle. A tank that overfills afterward points at the brine valve assembly, 7381180.

Before you order the venturi

Both listings here are aftermarket. The SWEthSU 7129716 seal kit is the low-risk order: one number fits all four models. The Suifaqi venturi carries five legacy numbers for two model pairs that Whirlpool gives two different kits, and no listing with 7398705 or 7398674 was opened this session, so clean first (no parts needed) and buy the OEM kit by number if the nozzle is cracked. Skip this page if there is no softener yet: that is the hard water and white scale guide. If the water runs orange, the iron in well water guide covers the 10 ppm limit this valve is most often pushed past.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Whirlpool WHES40E a different softener from the WHES40?

Not in the parts list. The current WHES40/WHES44 manual (7392319 Rev G) never uses an E suffix: the spec table, the valve parts list and the softener parts list are written for the WHES40 and WHES44 only, and the model code the control shows is L40P. Order WHES40 parts for a WHES40E; the E is a retail designation, not a separate bill of materials.

Which nozzle and venturi kit fits the Whirlpool WHES30?

The WHES30/WHES33 manual (7392301 Rev H) lists the nozzle and venturi kit as part 7398674. The WHES40/WHES44 manual lists a different kit, 7398705. The two model pairs share the seal kit (7129716), the brine valve assembly (7381180) and the motor, cam and gear kit (7397864), but the nozzle and venturi number changes with the tank size, so check your model before ordering.

What does Err 3 mean on a Whirlpool water softener?

The troubleshooting table in both current manuals groups Err1, Err3 and Err4 in one row with the same four causes, in this order: a fault in the wiring harness or its connections to the position switch, a fault in the switch, a valve fault causing high torque (rotor and seal), or an inoperative motor. Only Err5 has its own row: an electronic control malfunction, fixed by replacing the board.

How do you clear an error code on a Whirlpool WHES40?

The manual's procedure is to unplug the power supply, correct the problem, plug the softener back in and wait 8 minutes. If the fault was not corrected, the error code comes back on the display after that wait. The manual does not offer a button sequence that clears a code without power cycling, so start with the wiring harness and switch connections before ordering a motor or rotor.

How much resin does a Whirlpool WHES40 hold, and how many bags does a refill take?

The WHES40/WHES44 manual's specification table gives 1.14 cu ft of high-capacity ion exchange resin for the WHES40 and 1.23 cu ft for the WHES44. The WHES30 holds 0.82 cu ft and the WHES33 0.88 cu ft, per the WHES30/WHES33 manual. Whirlpool's refill part 0502272 is sold as 1 cu ft, so a WHES30 refill uses most of one bag and a WHES40 refill needs part of a second.
