Best 20 inch Big Blue filter housing: port size, 90 psi rating, material, wrench, bracket and NSF/ANSI 42, by published spec

If you are shopping for a whole-house system rather than a bare housing, this is the wrong page: the well water and city water system reviews pick housings with cartridges already chosen, and this page compares only the can and its cap.

How was this shortlist built?

Every figure on this page is a manufacturer’s published specification, read on 2026-09-15 from the document named beside it. No housing was pressurised, installed or opened by this site.

A Big Blue housing is the 4.5 inch diameter sump-and-cap format Pentair sells under the Pentek name and that other makers copy in the same dimensions. The housings were compared on seven specs: port size, maximum working pressure, temperature range, housing material, a pressure relief button, whether the wrench and bracket ship in the box, and an NSF/ANSI listing for the housing itself.

NSF/ANSI 42 is the standard for drinking water treatment units with aesthetic effects; when a housing rather than a cartridge is listed to it, the listing covers material safety and structural integrity, not contaminant reduction. Pentair’s sheet uses exactly that wording.

Two brands named in the assignment are gaps, not picks. Culligan’s current DIY catalog lists two 10 inch heavy-duty housings, the WH-HD200-C and the HD-950A named in the original assignment, but Culligan’s own page for the HD-950A gives it the same 13.25 x 7.25 x 7.25 in size class as the WH-HD200-C, not a 20 inch Big Blue, so Culligan appears here as a 10 inch alternative with its own figures. Filtrete’s own site loads and its navigation sells no water filter housing at all, only HVAC air filters, and no reachable DuPont page names a 20 inch housing either, so that column is absent rather than guessed.

The Pentek 150233 itself has no live standalone Amazon listing under its part number at the time of writing, only an out-of-stock bundle, so it is named and not linked; Pentair’s sibling part numbers 150467 (3/4 inch) and 150235 and 150236 (1-1/2 inch) share the same sheet and the same NSF/ANSI 42 listing, and a plumbing supply stocks all four. Pentair itself sells no housing directly online: its product and filter-housing category pages are both a dealer locator with no spec content, so the PDF spec sheet stays the only primary source for these numbers.

How do the housings compare on paper?

Manufacturer figures. “Not published” means the cited page prints no value; it does not mean the housing lacks one.

Pentek 150233: buy it or skip it?

Buy it if the main line is 1 inch, the static pressure is known to sit under 90 psi, and you want a housing whose pressure rating, temperature range and NSF/ANSI 42 listing are printed on a manufacturer document you can hand to an inspector. Pentair’s sheet 310053 lists the 150233 at 23.22 x 7.45 in (590 x 189 mm) with a high-flow polypropylene (HFPP) cap, a pressure relief button and an initial pressure drop of 1 psi at 15 gpm with no cartridge fitted.

The flaw is the box: it is empty apart from the housing. Pentair sells the SW-4 wrench as part 144368 and the zinc-plated WB-ZP bracket kit as part 150061, neither of which has a live standalone Amazon listing. An SW-4 compatible aftermarket wrench is live as a 2-pack; it is a third-party part, not a Pentair one, and this page says so.

Skip it if the line is 3/4 inch or 1-1/2 inch: Pentair makes those as 150467 and 150235 or 150236 on the same sheet, and reducing bushings on a 1 inch cap add joints for no flow. Skip it if static pressure runs above 90 psi and there is no pressure-reducing valve upstream, because the sheet caps the 20 inch length at 90 psi against 100 psi for the 10 inch length.

Alternative: the iSpring WGB32B if you want wrench, bracket and three housings in one purchase and can live without a published pressure figure from the maker’s own page.

iSpring WGB32B: buy it or skip it?

Buy it if the plan is three 20 inch stages on a 1 inch line and you would rather buy the housings, wrench, bracket and first cartridge set together. iSpring’s product page states 1 in NPT inlet and outlet, water flow up to 15 GPM, 20 x 4.5 in cartridges and a 1 year manufacturer warranty, and the Amazon listing title confirms the 1 inch ports.

The flaw is documentation. iSpring’s own WGB32B page prints no maximum working pressure, no temperature range and no housing material beyond “heavy-duty”, and no NSF/ANSI listing for the housing. The Amazon listing’s specifications section states 25 to 80 psi working pressure and 40 to 100°F, which is useful but is a listing, not a spec sheet; if a permit or insurer wants a manufacturer document, iSpring’s page does not supply one.

iSpring does not appear to sell the WGB-series 20 inch housing on its own: every live listing found was a complete WGB32B, WGB32B-KS or WGB32B-PB system. Replacement cartridges for it are on the iSpring WGB32B replacement filters page.

Skip it if you need one housing, not three. Skip it if the pressure or temperature rating has to come from the manufacturer’s own document. Skip it if the line is anything other than 1 inch, since iSpring’s page names no other port size for this model.

Alternative: the Pentek 150233 from a plumbing supply, one housing at a time, with the published 90 psi rating and NSF/ANSI 42 listing that iSpring’s page lacks.

Culligan WH-HD200-C: buy it or skip it?

Buy it only after admitting you may not need 20 inches at all. The WH-HD200-C is a 10 inch housing, not a Big Blue, and Culligan’s page gives it 1 inch ports, a 30 to 125 psi pressure range, a 40 to 100°F temperature range and a WQA/IAPMO listing for structural integrity. That 125 psi ceiling is 35 psi above Pentair’s 20 inch figure.

Culligan sells the housing with the filter separately, which the listing title says plainly. Cartridges that fit it are on the Culligan HF-360 and WH-HD200 replacement filters page.

Skip it if the reason for a 20 inch housing is cartridge life or flow: a 10 inch cartridge holds half the media and loads twice as fast, which is the whole argument for the larger format. Skip it if you specifically want a 20 inch Culligan housing, because Culligan’s current DIY catalog lists two heavy-duty housings, the WH-HD200-C and the HD-950A, and Culligan’s own page puts both in the same 10 inch size class, not a 20 inch Big Blue, and this page will not invent a spec Culligan does not publish.

Alternative: the Pentek 150233 if the 20 inch length is the requirement, or a second Culligan WH-HD200-C in series if the requirement is really more media at a printed 125 psi.

What goes wrong?

Static pressure exceeds the rating. Pentair’s sheet gives the 20 inch housings 90 psi, not the 100 psi of the 10 inch length, and a night-time static reading on a city main often runs higher than the daytime figure.

The cartridge does not seat. Big Blue cartridges vary by about an eighth of an inch in diameter between the two common Pentek families. The 20 inch Big Blue cartridge compatibility page has the dimensions; this page does not repeat them.

Pressure drops after the install. Pentair’s 1 psi at 15 gpm is the empty housing; the cartridge adds the rest, and a fine sediment cartridge on a 20 inch housing can halve the pressure at the shower once it loads. The sump grows something. A clear or blue sump left in a warm utility room for a year past the cartridge interval is the subject of the growth inside a filter housing guide; the fix is the interval and a light-blocking sump, not a different brand.

No wrench. A 20 inch sump that has held 90 psi for a year does not come off by hand, and the genuine SW-4 is not sold standalone on Amazon at the time of writing. Buy the wrench with the housing, or own the aftermarket 2-pack before the first cartridge change is due.
