The target is EPA’s secondary standard for pH, 6.5 to 8.5. Whether the water needs treating is the blue-green stains guide’s job; this page only picks the tank.
Which media: calcite or a calcite/Corosex blend?
Calcite is crushed calcium carbonate that dissolves slowly into acidic water and raises its pH. Clack Corporation’s calcite data sheet gives it a working range of pH 5.0 to 7.0, a bed depth of 24 to 30 inches, a service flow of 3 to 6 gpm per square foot of bed.
The backwash rate is 8 to 12 gpm per square foot, and the same sheet lists calcite as certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 60.
Corosex is 97% magnesium oxide, which reacts faster and reaches lower. Clack’s Corosex data sheet rates it for pH 4.5 to 6.0, backwashes it at 10 to 12 gpm per square foot, and says it is combined with Clack calcite at a minimum 50-50 ratio so the fast media does not overshoot.

One Clack caution decides the tank type for a blend: a downflow Corosex bed can cement when hardness is over 5 grains per gallon, and Clack recommends upflow above that.

AFWFilters Digital pH 10: buy it or skip it?
Buy it if the well has a drain nearby, the household is one bathroom with one or two people, and the raw pH is 5.0 or above.
AFWFilters lists a 9 by 48 inch tank with 1 cubic foot of calcite on a Fleck 5600SXT, a digital valve that backwashes the bed on a schedule so channeling and compaction get corrected without anyone opening the tank.
AFWFilters prints a maximum service flow of 2.6 gpm and requires 3.6 gpm of available flow for the backwash cycle, the well’s number to check before ordering.
Skip it if the well cannot deliver 3.6 gpm on demand or there is no floor drain: a backwashing valve with nowhere to send water is the wrong tool. Skip it for more than one bathroom, because 2.6 gpm of service flow is the ceiling AFWFilters prints, and two showers running will feel it.
Alternative: the GreenFlo pH 15 below, when the drain is the problem, or a Fleck 2510 build from a dealer when the flow is.
AFWFilters GreenFlo pH 15: buy it or skip it?
Buy it if there is no drain and no power at the tank location. AFWFilters lists a 10 by 54 inch tank with 1.5 cubic feet of calcite on an in/out control valve, water flowing upward through the bed, and a service flow of 3.2 gpm. No backwash means no wastewater and no timer to set.
The honest flaw is structural, not printed on the page: nothing lifts and resettles an upflow bed automatically, so channeling and compaction can go uncaught longer than in a system that backwashes on a schedule. The valve model is not printed on the page either, so a rebuild kit is a support call.
Skip it if the household draws more than 3.2 gpm at once, the ceiling AFWFilters prints for service flow. Skip it if the water also carries iron: this page compares pH treatment only, and an iron problem needs its own filter ahead of the neutralizer.

US Water Systems Upflow Calcite Neutralizer: buy it or skip it?
Buy it if a larger household needs an upflow tank. US Water Systems lists the 10 GPM model as a 10 by 54 inch tank holding 100 lb of calcite and the 20 GPM model as a 13 by 54 inch tank holding 150 lb, both rated for their nameplate flow and both drain-free in service.
US Water Systems is also plain about the upkeep: a manual backwash is recommended once or twice a year, or whenever flow drops, and the calcite is replenished every 6 to 18 months depending on water chemistry and usage. The valve model is not published.
Skip it if the reader wants automatic backwash, because there is none, and skip it if the raw pH is below 6.0: the page lists calcite only, and Clack’s Corosex blend is what reaches pH 4.5.

Buy a bag before the first year is out. US Water Systems’ 6 to 18 month replenishment interval applies to every calcite bed on this page, and the media is the same crushed calcium carbonate whichever tank it sits in.
The Imerys (Clack) A8021-01 Calcite is the Clack-branded media, listed on Amazon as a 0.55 cubic foot, 50 lb bag.
The IPW Industries Calcite Filter Media is a second 50 lb, 0.55 cubic foot bag under a different label. Clack’s Corosex (part A8011) was not found on Amazon as a bulk bag, only as small inline cartridges, so a blend top-up is a dealer order.
Skip both bags if the tank is a blend and the raw pH is under 6.0: topping a 50-50 bed with calcite alone shifts the ratio away from the mix Clack specifies.
Before you buy a neutralizer
Do not order a tank until two numbers are on paper: the raw pH read on site, and the gpm the well can deliver. The well water test panel is where the first one comes from, and the blue-green stains guide explains why a jar sample drifts toward 7 before it reaches the lab.
A pH of 6.0 or above is a calcite tank; 5.3 to 6.0 is a calcite/Corosex blend at Clack’s minimum 50-50 ratio; under 5.3 is a soda ash feed, not a tank.
A well that can spare 3.6 gpm into a drain gets a backwashing valve; one that cannot gets an upflow tank and a manual backwash once or twice a year.
Whichever tank wins, a 50 lb bag of calcite is the part it will ask for within 6 to 18 months.
What goes wrong?
Hardness climbs. Calcite adds calcium and Corosex adds magnesium as they dissolve, and Virginia Cooperative Extension says a neutralizing filter will likely increase hardness. The hard water guide covers what the new scale is; a softener downstream is the fix, and the softener size calculator sizes it from the post-neutralizer hardness number.
The bed runs low. Calcite is consumed, not just fouled, so the level drops and the tap pH slides back down. US Water Systems’ 6 to 18 month interval is the reminder; a pH strip at the kitchen tap every few months is the cheaper one.
The upflow bed packs. With no automatic backwash, an upflow tank compacts until flow drops, which is why US Water Systems schedules a manual backwash once or twice a year. A Fleck 5600SXT does that on its own timer, at the cost of a drain and 3.6 gpm.
The pH is lower than the media. A calcite bed rated for pH 5.0 to 7.0 on water at 4.8 does not fail loudly; it simply never reaches EPA’s 6.5 to 8.5 range, and the copper staining continues.
That is a change to a Corosex blend down to 4.5, or a soda ash feed below Virginia Cooperative Extension’s 5.3 floor, not a bigger calcite tank.
