The runner-up for long intervals is the ZeroWater ExtremeLife, whose data sheet lists 400 gallons per cartridge at 0.65 gpm with WQA certification to NSF/ANSI 53 for PFOA and PFOS only, and no lead reduction line. The Brita Elite edges past PUR on lead, 99.9% versus 99.70%, and matches its 100 gallons, but carries no PFAS line. Skip every unit here if the kitchen tap is a pull-out or pull-down sprayer, which PUR says its systems do not fit, or if a lab result exceeds what one small cartridge is certified to reduce: that is an under-sink job.

If the kitchen tap is a pull-out sprayer, this page cannot help: PUR’s own FAQ says its systems do not fit one, no other maker here says its unit does, and the under-sink filter without RO page is the one to read.
How was this shortlist built?
Every figure on this page is the manufacturer’s published specification, read from the performance data sheet or manual named beside it on 2026-09-13. Nothing was bench-tested and no unit carries a rating from this site.
Six candidates were compared on the reductions each maker lists under NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 401, whether a PFAS line appears at all, rated capacity in gallons per cartridge, rated service flow, and which faucet types the maker excludes.
NSF/ANSI 42 is the standard for aesthetic effects such as chlorine taste and odor, NSF/ANSI 53 is the standard for health-related reductions such as lead, and NSF/ANSI 401 covers the list Brita’s sheet titles “Emerging Compounds/Incidental Contaminants”.
Two gaps are flagged rather than filled. The NSF DWTU listing search returned no matching products for Culligan under Standard 53 or Waterdrop under Standard 42 this session, and the WQA and IAPMO registries were not queried, so every certification below is listed per the maker’s own data sheet, not a database record.
No maker page rendered a replacement-cartridge price, so cost per year is not captured; the table gives cartridges per year from each maker’s stated interval instead.
Four products are named without a link because no genuine Amazon listing was found this session: the basic PUR RF3375 cartridge, the Waterdrop WD-FC-06, and the complete Culligan FM-25 and ZeroWater ExtremeLife systems.

Manufacturer figures. “None” means the cited sheet prints no line for that standard. Percentages are the maker’s stated reductions.

The two PUR rows are identical on purpose. PUR’s performance data sheet dated 28 October 2025 is the same document at the RF9999 URL and the RF3375 URL.
So on PUR’s sheet the basic RF3375 carries the same 99.70% lead, 99.92% Total PFAS and Standard 401 data as the PUR PLUS RF9999. That is PUR’s sheet, not a finding of this site, and the sheet gives no performance reason to pay more for the RF9999.
PUR PLUS RF9999: buy it or skip it?
Buy it if lead and PFAS are both on the shopping list and the tap is a plain threaded aerator faucet. PUR’s data sheet lists the RF9999 as certified by IAPMO R&T to NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 401, with 98.71% chlorine taste and odor, 99.70% lead at pH 6.5 and 99.92% Total PFAS.
The same sheet rates the cartridge at 100 gallons and the system at 0.52 gpm, and PUR’s product page gives a 3 month interval, so a household that follows the interval buys four cartridges a year. The RF9999 6-pack covers a year and a half at that rate; the 2-pack covers six months.
Skip it if the faucet is a pull-out or handheld sprayer: PUR’s FAQ names both as not compatible. Skip it if 100 gallons is too short an interval, because the ZeroWater ExtremeLife lists four times that.
Alternative: the basic PUR RF3375, on PUR’s sheet the same certified data, if a genuine listing can be found; none was this session.
Brita Elite: buy it or skip it?
Buy it if lead and chlorine are the targets and PFAS is not. Brita’s data sheet for the FF-100 and SAFF-100 systems with the FR-200 cartridge lists WQA certification to NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 401, with 99.0% chlorine and 99.9% lead at both pH 6.5 and pH 8.5.
Brita rates the FR-200 at 100 gallons and 0.58 gpm, the highest flow of the three 100 gallon cartridges here, and states no month interval. The chrome version ships with two cartridges.
Skip it if PFAS reduction is the reason for buying: Brita’s sheet carries no PFOA or PFOS line, unlike PUR’s and ZeroWater’s. Skip it if a month interval matters for a reminder schedule, because Brita prints none.
Alternative: the PUR PLUS , same 100 gallons with the PFAS line.
ZeroWater ExtremeLife: buy it or skip it?
Buy the replacement cartridge if an ExtremeLife system is already on the tap and PFOA and PFOS are the target. ZeroWater’s data sheet lists WQA certification to NSF/ANSI 42, 53 for PFOA and PFOS, and 372, with 99.1% chlorine and PFOA and PFOS above 98.9%, on a 400 gallon rated service life at 0.65 gpm.
Do not buy a system around it. The complete unit no longer appears in ZeroWater’s own navigation or on-site search, no complete-system listing was found on Amazon this session, and the cartridge listing above showed no single buy box and a high-price flag when opened.
Skip it if lead reduction is the reason for buying: the sheet’s NSF/ANSI 372 line is a materials standard for lead content in the filter’s wetted parts, and there is no Standard 53 lead reduction line. Skip it if a battery-powered part is unwelcome, because the filter-life indicator uses one and ZeroWater’s warranty excludes it.
Alternative: the PUR PLUS , which lists lead and Total PFAS together.
Culligan FM-25: buy it or skip it?
Buy the FM-25R cartridge if an FM-25 is already on the faucet and lead and chlorine are the targets. Culligan’s manual, Rev D of January 2020, lists IAPMO R&T certification to NSF/ANSI 42 and 53, with 97.4% chlorine, 98.0% lead at pH 6.5 and 98.7% at pH 8.5, plus lindane, atrazine and turbidity.
Culligan rates the cartridge at 200 gallons or 2 months at 0.5 gpm. Two months is the shortest interval on this page, so 200 gallons buys six cartridges a year rather than four.
Skip it if PFAS or a Standard 401 listing is wanted: the manual claims neither. Skip it as a new purchase, because no complete FM-25 system listing was found on Amazon.
The Waterdrop WD-FC-06 is the other unlinked candidate: Waterdrop’s product page lists 320 gallons or 3 months at 0.5 gpm under NSF 42 and 372 only, with no Standard 53 or 401 claim and no certifier named.
Before you buy a faucet filter
Do not buy any of these until you know which contaminant you are buying against. Chlorine taste alone is a Standard 42 job and every unit here claims it; lead or PFAS needs the Standard 53 line with a percentage beside it, and only the PUR PLUS lists both. A test kit or the utility’s consumer confidence report is where that number comes from.
Who should choose an under-sink unit instead?
Every faucet filter here runs one small cartridge at 0.5 to 0.65 gpm and stops at whatever its own sheet claims. Three readers are sized wrong for all of them.
- A reader with a lab result above what the chosen cartridge is certified to reduce, or a contaminant with no line on any sheet here, such as nitrate or arsenic. The lead and PFAS guides list the treatment classes.
- A reader who wants full-pressure flow at the tap. An under-sink unit has its own faucet and does not throttle the main one to 0.52 gpm.
- A reader whose faucet is a pull-out or pull-down sprayer, which PUR excludes and no other maker here confirms.

What goes wrong?
The cartridge runs past its gallon limit. PUR’s 100 gallons and Culligan’s 200 gallons are the makers’ rated capacities, and the reduction percentages on the sheets apply to that volume, not beyond it. A household drawing filtered water for cooking and drinking can pass 100 gallons well inside 3 months.
The mark is misread. NSF/ANSI 372 on the Waterdrop and ZeroWater sheets is a materials standard, not a lead reduction claim; a filter bought for lead needs the Standard 53 line.
The faucet does not take the adapter. PUR’s FAQ excludes pull-out and handheld faucets, and none of the other four makers states which faucets its unit fits, so the reader with an unusual tap finds out at installation.
The standard reads the same but the list differs. PUR’s sheet lists 15 Standard 401 compounds and Brita’s lists 7, so a 401 mark on two boxes does not mean the same test list.
Frequently asked questions
Does a faucet-mount filter remove PFAS?
Only where the maker's data sheet prints a PFAS line under NSF/ANSI 53. PUR's sheet for the RF9999 lists 99.92% Total PFAS reduction, and ZeroWater's ExtremeLife sheet lists PFOA and PFOS above 98.9%. Brita's FR-200 sheet, Culligan's FM-25 manual and Waterdrop's WD-FC-06 listing carry no PFAS line at all, so a faucet filter is not a PFAS filter by default.
What does NSF/ANSI 401 certify on a faucet filter?
Brita's data sheet titles the standard Emerging Compounds/Incidental Contaminants: a list of compounds such as bisphenol A and microplastics that sit outside Standards 42 and 53. PUR's sheet lists 15 Standard 401 compounds for the RF9999 and Brita's lists 7 for the FR-200, so a 401 mark says which list the maker had tested, not that two filters with the mark match.
Will a faucet-mount filter fit a pull-out or pull-down sprayer?
PUR's faucet-systems FAQ says pull-out and handheld faucets are not compatible with its systems. Brita, Culligan, ZeroWater and Waterdrop do not address sprayer faucets on the pages read for this comparison, so no fit is confirmed for any of them either. A faucet filter mounts on the aerator thread, and a sprayer head does not offer one.
Does NSF/ANSI 372 mean a filter reduces lead in the water?
No. NSF/ANSI 372 is a lead-content standard for the wetted materials of the product itself. ZeroWater's data sheet lists it as a low lead requirement, separately from its PFOA and PFOS reduction line, and Waterdrop's WD-FC-06 names Standards 42 and 372 only. Lead reduction from the water is a Standard 53 claim with a percentage beside it, as on PUR's and Brita's sheets.
How many gallons does a faucet filter cartridge last?
Between 100 and 400 gallons on the current maker sheets: PUR RF9999 100 gallons, Brita FR-200 100 gallons, Culligan FM-25R 200 gallons, Waterdrop WD-FF-03A 320 gallons and ZeroWater ExtremeLife 400 gallons. Gallons and months are separate limits: PUR and Waterdrop state 3 months, Culligan 2 months, and the cartridge is due at whichever limit arrives first.
