The VH410 sold on Amazon carries no NSF/ANSI 55 listing at all; its VH410-V sibling is Class B, rated 14 GPM at 16 mJ/cm2, and Viqua’s spec sheet says Class B systems are not intended for treatment of contaminated water. If the well has just tested positive for coliform, none of the four candidates carries the NSF/ANSI 55 Class A listing written for that case: the table below shows which published number stands in for it. The Bluonics 12 GPM gets a full verdict below but no card above, since no matching Amazon listing or dose rating could be confirmed.
How was this shortlist built?
Every figure here is the manufacturer’s published specification, read on 2026-09-12 from Viqua’s 2025 spec sheet and 2015 Home and Tap catalog (LIT-520282-R, hosted by Pure Aqua), the HQUA-OWS-12 manual (version 20180101) and the Bluonics UV FAQ. Nothing was bench-tested. Units are compared on rated flow at 30 mJ/cm2 and 40 mJ/cm2, NSF/ANSI 55 class, lamp life, chamber material, controller alarm, and pretreatment limits.
A UV dose (mJ/cm2) is the energy delivered per square centimetre of water passing the lamp, and it falls as flow rises. UV transmittance (UVT) is the share of the lamp’s output that reaches through the water, so a GPM figure means something only beside a dose and a UVT. Viqua prints both: the plain VH410 and D4 are rated at 95% UVT, the NSF-listed -V models at 70% UVT, one reason the listed version shows a lower number from the same chamber. HQUA and Bluonics print a GPM with neither.
Only the VH410 was opened as a live Amazon listing on 2026-09-12; the D4, HQUA-OWS-12 and a Bluonics-branded 12 GPM unit did not appear as standalone listings, so they are named without links.
No unit here holds an NSF/ANSI 55 Class A listing, the classification for water that is not already disinfected. NSF/ANSI 55-2024 covers both classes. Viqua’s spec sheet quotes the Class B scope on the VH410-V: supplemental bactericidal treatment of disinfected public drinking water, not for contaminated water. EPA’s Total Coliform Rule sets the MCLG for total coliforms at zero, and a well that fails that test is not “disinfected public drinking water”, so the Class B wording excludes it. Viqua’s Class A line is separate and unverified here, so the dose-rated flow table below is the stand-in.

Buy it if the house never draws more than 18 GPM and you want the only unit here with a dose-rated flow table, a 9,000-hour lamp and a controller that alarms on lamp failure.
Viqua’s 2015 catalog rates it at 34 GPM at 16 mJ/cm2, 18 GPM at 30 mJ/cm2 and 14 GPM at 40 mJ/cm2, all at 95% UVT, from a 60 W lamp in a 23.5 by 3.5 inch 304 stainless chamber with combination 1 inch MNPT and 3/4 inch FNPT ports.
Viqua’s spec sheet lists the matching replacement parts: lamp S410RL-HO, sleeve QSO-410, controller BA-ICE-CL. The lamp is the recurring cost, and this page quotes no price for it: read the current S410RL-HO listing before you order.
Skip it if you need any NSF/ANSI 55 listing: this SKU has none, the VH410-V is Class B, and neither is Class A. Skip it if the raw water exceeds Viqua’s limits of 7 grains hardness, 0.3 mg/L iron or 0.1 mg/L tannins until the matching filter is upstream.

Viqua D4: buy it or skip it?
Buy it if peak demand stays under 12 GPM and you are buying from a dealer or as the IHS12-D4 cabinet, which carries the same ratings with a pre-filter housing built in. Viqua’s catalog rates the D4 (part 650694) at 23 GPM at 16 mJ/cm2, 12 GPM at 30 mJ/cm2 and 9 GPM at 40 mJ/cm2, from a 50 W lamp in a 20.5 by 4 inch chamber with 3/4 inch MNPT ports.
Skip it if you were counting on 12 GPM from a listed unit: the D4-V and D4-V+ are the NSF/ANSI 55 Class B versions and carry a single 8.9 GPM rating. Skip it if you need a bare D4 today: no standalone listing was found on 2026-09-12, only its lamp and sleeve.
Alternative: the Viqua VH410 , which was found as a live listing and adds 6 GPM at the same 30 mJ/cm2 dose.
HQUA-OWS-12: buy it or skip it?
Buy it if 12 GPM is enough, the budget is tight and you will read its manual, which prints the fullest pretreatment table of the four. HQUA rates the OWS-12 at 12 GPM through a 37.2 by 2.5 inch 304 stainless chamber with 3/4 inch MNPT ports, a 4-pin HQUA-OWS-12L lamp of about 9,000 hours replaced annually, a HQUA-OWS-12Q sleeve, and 4 to 125 psi with horizontal installation and ambient air of 32 to 122 °F.
Skip it if you need a dose figure: the manual prints 12 GPM with no mJ/cm2 beside it, so it cannot be placed on the Viqua table. Skip it if a listing matters: the manual makes no NSF/ANSI 55 claim of any class.
Skip it if you are ordering from Amazon without checking the model: the OWS-12 base unit was not found on 2026-09-12, and search returned a different model, the HQUA-TWS-12, unread here.

Bluonics 12 GPM: buy it or skip it?
Buy it only if you can confirm the brand on the seller’s own site first. Bluonics’ FAQ rates its 55 W unit at 12 GPM and its 110 W unit at 24 GPM, in an SS304 chamber at 253.7 nm, with a lamp change every 9,000 hours or once a year and a system draw of 72 W, more than the 55 W lamp figure in the model name.
Skip it if you need a dose: none is published. Skip it if you need a listing: the FAQ makes no NSF/ANSI 55 claim. Skip it if you are shopping Amazon search results: no Bluonics-branded 12 GPM whole-house unit matched on 2026-09-12, and unbranded “12GPM 55W” listings in its place are not this product until the brand field confirms it.
Alternative: the HQUA-OWS-12, whose manual at least prints the pretreatment ceilings.
Before you buy a UV purifier
Do not buy a UV unit until two numbers are in hand: peak draw in GPM, from the whole-house filter flow rate calculator, and hardness in grains per gallon, from the well water test panel.
Peak draw at or under 18 GPM and hardness at or under 7 gpg: the Viqua VH410 , or 14 GPM if you size at 40 mJ/cm2. Hardness over 7 gpg: a softener first, sized on the softener calculator.
A coliform-positive result belongs on the shock chlorination guide and a retest before any unit is sized.
What goes wrong?
The sleeve fouls. Both Viqua’s VH410-V spec sheet and the HQUA-OWS-12 manual cap the raw water at 7 grains (120 mg/L) hardness, 0.3 mg/L iron and 0.1 mg/L tannins, and the HQUA manual states that above 7 gpg the water should be softened. Each of the three coats the quartz sleeve, and a coated sleeve delivers less dose at the same GPM.

The flow outruns the dose. The same VH410 lamp is rated 34 GPM at 16 mJ/cm2, 18 GPM at 30 and 14 GPM at 40, so a unit sized on the biggest number on the box runs at the smallest dose whenever two showers and a washing machine coincide. Size on peak draw at the dose you chose.
The lamp ages out silently. Every maker here prints 9,000 hours, and HQUA and Bluonics both say replace annually. The VH410 ’s BA-ICE-CL controller counts lamp life and sounds a reminder; a unit without an alarm relies on the calendar.
The well is the problem, not the pipe. UV acts only on the water passing the lamp, so a coliform-positive well is shock chlorinated and retested first, and the unit is sized for the water that comes back.

Every maker on this page prints the same figure. None of the three manufacturer documents used here publishes a sleeve-cleaning interval.
Does a UV purifier need a water softener in front of it?
If hardness is over 7 grains per gallon (120 mg/L), yes. Viqua's VH410-V spec sheet and the HQUA-OWS-12 manual both set that ceiling, and the HQUA manual states that above 7 gpg the water should be softened. Both documents also cap iron at 0.3 mg/L and tannins at 0.1 mg/L, because each of the three coats the quartz sleeve and blocks the lamp.
Why does one UV unit have three different GPM ratings?
Because the rating is a flow at a stated dose. Viqua's catalog rates the plain VH410 at 34 GPM at 16 mJ/cm2, 18 GPM at 30 mJ/cm2 and 14 GPM at 40 mJ/cm2, all at 95% UV transmittance. The same lamp delivers less energy per litre as water moves faster. A GPM figure printed without a dose, like HQUA's or Bluonics', cannot be compared to any of these three.
