At Brita’s $19.99 filter price that is about $0.17 a gallon. The runner-up is the PUR PLUS PPF951K, which PUR’s data sheet lists as WQA certified to NSF/ANSI 53 for lead at 99.4% to 99.7%, with 42 and 401 named under a general tested statement. The sheet carries no PFOA/PFOS row and the filter is rated for 40 gallons. Skip both if the only complaint is chlorine taste: the Brita Standard is certified to NSF/ANSI 42 for that at $7.99. Clearly Filtered, Epic Pure and LifeStraw rest their lead and PFAS numbers on laboratory tests or “meets” language, not a certification mark.

Every figure here is the manufacturer’s published specification, read from the data sheet or product page named beside it on 2026-09-12, or the standard’s own description from NSF. Nothing was tested and no pitcher carries a rating from this site.

The filters were compared on four things: which NSF/ANSI standard each is certified to, which body certified it, rated capacity in gallons per filter, and the maker’s own price per replacement filter. Cost per gallon is this page’s division of the last two; no maker prints it.

NSF/ANSI 42 is the aesthetic effects standard: NSF says it covers chlorine, taste and odor, and particulates. NSF/ANSI 53 covers reduction of contaminants with a health effect regulated by EPA and Health Canada, which is where lead and PFOA/PFOS claims sit.

NSF/ANSI 401 covers what NSF calls emerging compounds and incidental contaminants. NSF/ANSI 372, which two makers here cite, is a lead-content standard for the filter’s own materials, not a reduction standard.

“Certified” on this page means the maker’s data sheet names a certifying body, WQA, IAPMO R&T or NSF, against a numbered standard. “Tested” means the maker cites a laboratory result to the same protocol with no certification mark.

Buy it if lead or PFAS is the reason for buying a pitcher and a certification mark, not a lab report, is the bar.

Brita’s performance data sheet for the OB06 lists WQA certification against NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 401, IAPMO R&T certification against NSF/ANSI 53 for PFOA/PFOS, 99.5% lead reduction at pH 6.5, 99.6% at pH 8.5, and 98.1% PFOA/PFOS reduction, over 120 gallons or about six months.

Skip it if the only complaint is chlorine taste: the Brita Standard is WQA certified to NSF/ANSI 42 for that at $7.99 a filter. Skip it if the house is on a lead service line and a pitcher cannot keep up with the draw.

PUR PLUS PPF951K: buy it or skip it?

Buy it if the pitcher in the house is already a PUR and lead is the concern. PUR’s 2024 performance data sheet lists the PPF951K as certified by WQA to NSF/ANSI 53 for lead at 99.4% at pH 8.5 and 99.7% at pH 6.5.

Buy it if a certified PFOA/PFOS number matters more than filter life. Zero Technologies' performance data sheet dated 1 December 2023 lists the 5-stage filter as certified by IAPMO R&T against NSF/ANSI 53 and 42, with lead at pH 6.5 at 99.7% and PFOA/PFOS at 94.9%.

Waterdrop Chubby PF-01A: buy it or skip it?

Buy it if chlorine taste is the complaint and cost per gallon decides. Waterdrop’s NSF page lists the PF-01A under NSF/ANSI 42 and 372, and Waterdrop’s owner’s manual rates the filter at 200 gallons or 3 months. At Waterdrop’s $13.99 per filter, from a $41.99 3-pack, that is about $0.07 a gallon, the lowest here.

Skip it for lead or PFAS. NSF/ANSI 372 is a materials standard, and the Amazon listing’s own comparison table puts this ASIN at 42 and 372 only; the 53 line belongs to the separate PF-01A Plus variant.

The lead and PFAS figures in the listing title are Waterdrop’s own data, not a certification. The listing also disagrees with itself on life: the title says 3 months, its comparison table says 9 months for the same SKU.

Alternative: the Brita Standard , WQA certified to 42, at $0.20 a gallon.

Clearly Filtered: buy it or skip it?

Buy it if a laboratory report is acceptable in place of a mark. Clearly Filtered’s performance data page says the filter is certified by NSF to NSF/ANSI 42 and 372, and cites tests by QFT, now IAPMO New Jersey, an ISO 17025 laboratory, at 99.34% for lead, 99.64% for PFOA and above 99.80% for PFOS.

Skip it on price: at $58.50 per 100-gallon filter on Clearly Filtered’s page, that is about $0.585 a gallon, more than three times the Brita Elite. None of the lead or PFAS figures is an NSF/ANSI 53 certification, and no 401 figure is published.

Epic Pure: buy it or skip it?

Buy it if the house already owns the Epic pitcher. Epic’s replacement filter page lists NSF certification to NSF/ANSI 42, independent testing to 42, 53, 401 and P231, 99.9% for lead and 99.9% for PFAS, 100 gallons per filter, at $59.00.

Skip it for the same reason as Clearly Filtered: about $0.59 a gallon, with the 53 and 401 numbers tested, not certified. The linked ASIN is the original Pure Standard filter by its title; the listing’s bullets describe the newer Pure XP cartridge, so read the title first.

LifeStraw Home: buy it or skip it?

Buy it if a two-part filter and the maker’s “meets” language are acceptable. LifeStraw’s product page says the Home meets NSF 42, NSF 53 for PFOA, PFOS, lead, mercury, cadmium and copper, NSF 401, NSF P231 and NSF P473.

Its replacement filter page rates the membrane at 264 gallons, about a year, and the carbon and ion exchange filter at 40 gallons, about 2 months, at $16.95.

Skip it if a named certifier is the bar: neither LifeStraw’s page nor the linked listing names NSF, WQA or IAPMO as the body behind “meets”, and no lead percentage is published. The carbon filter alone is about $0.42 a gallon; the membrane’s price was not on the page read. The linked listing is the 7-cup glass pitcher.

Before you buy a pitcher

Do not choose on the word “removes”. Get a lead and PFAS result for the tap first: the water test kit review covers which kits report those numbers, and the PFAS guide explains what the result means.

A lead result points at the Brita Elite or the PUR PLUS , both WQA certified to NSF/ANSI 53 for lead. A PFAS result points at the Brita Elite or the ZeroWater , the two with a certified PFOA/PFOS row.

A chlorine taste alone points at the Brita Standard or the Waterdrop, and an under-sink filter is the step up when a pitcher’s gallons run out.

What goes wrong?

Filter life is read in months, not gallons. ZeroWater’s 15 gallons and PUR’s 40 run out well before a calendar reminder in a household that refills the pitcher several times a day.

The wrong variant of the same brand goes in the cart. Three brands here sell a base filter and a certified one under near-identical names, and the base lacks the 53 line.

NSF/ANSI 372 is read as lead reduction. It is the lead-content standard for the filter’s materials; a filter listed to 42 and 372 has made no certified lead claim.

A laboratory result is read as a certification. Clearly Filtered and Epic Pure publish percentages to the 53 and 401 protocols from independent labs and say so; the reader should keep the distinction too. When a pitcher’s gallons or its standard list fall short, the under-sink RO review is the next class up.

What is the difference between NSF/ANSI 42 and NSF/ANSI 53 on a water filter pitcher?

NSF describes NSF/ANSI 42 as the aesthetic effects standard: it covers chlorine, taste and odor, and particulates, none of which EPA regulates as a health contaminant. NSF/ANSI 53 covers reduction of contaminants with a health effect regulated by EPA and Health Canada, which is where lead and PFOA/PFOS claims sit. A pitcher certified only to 42 has made no certified lead or PFAS claim.

What does NSF/ANSI 401 certification on a pitcher filter cover?

NSF says NSF/ANSI 401 establishes minimum requirements for reducing specific emerging compounds and incidental contaminants, substances that are not yet regulated in drinking water. On this page the Brita Elite and PUR PLUS data sheets list WQA certification to 401; ZeroWater's IAPMO data sheet lists only 42 and 53, and LifeStraw cites 401 for its microplastics claim without naming a certifier.

Does the Brita Standard filter reduce lead?

Not under any certification. Brita's performance data sheet for the Standard OB03 filter lists WQA certification to NSF/ANSI 42 and 53 with rows for chlorine at 95%, zinc at 64%, cadmium, copper and mercury, but it has no lead row and no PFOA/PFOS row. The Brita Elite OB06 sheet is the one that lists lead at 99.5% and PFOA/PFOS at 98.1%.

Is the ZeroWater filter certified to reduce PFOA and PFOS?

Yes, per Zero Technologies' performance data sheet dated 1 December 2023, which lists the 5-stage filter as certified by IAPMO R&T against NSF/ANSI 53 with PFOA/PFOS reduction of 94.9% and lead at pH 6.5 of 99.7%. The same sheet lists no NSF/ANSI 401 line and rates the filter's service life at 15 gallons, the shortest of any filter on this page.

Are microplastics regulated in US drinking water?

No. EPA's draft Contaminant Candidate List 6, published 2 April 2026, names microplastics as one of 4 chemical groups alongside PFAS, pharmaceuticals and disinfection byproducts, and states they are not subject to any proposed or promulgated national primary drinking water regulation. A pitcher's microplastics claim therefore has no EPA limit to be measured against, whatever the listing title says.
