The runner-up is the Aquasure Harmony fine mesh unit Amazon labels 50,000 grains: Aquasure’s AS-HS48FM product page says up to 10 ppm of iron, but the owner’s manual prints no iron limit at all. The Whirlpool WHES40 (10 ppm) and GE GXSH40V (8 ppm) remain the only units here with an iron rating backed by WQA test data and an NSF/ANSI 44 statement, and neither is sold on Amazon. Both documents add that Wisconsin requires additional treatment above 5 ppm, so above 5 ppm the first tank is an iron filter, not a softener.

Nothing was bench-tested.

The nominal grain figure is the capacity at the maximum salt dose. Whirlpool prints three tiers for the WHES40: 40,000 grains at 15.5 lb, 31,600 at 9.0 lb and 11,900 at 2.4 lb. Pentair’s data sheet for its own 1.5 cu ft 5600SXT system with 8% resin (VT-17-01) rates 53,100 grains at 22.5 lb, 46,600 at 13.5 lb and 17,900 at 4.5 lb, so a 48,000 label on a 1.5 cu ft kit is nominal. The salt usage calculator turns those tiers into pounds a year.
Clear-water iron leaves the tap clear and turns red on standing. Only Whirlpool’s manual says how to program for it: add 5 grains to the hardness setting per 1 ppm of ferrous iron, so 20 gpg with 3 ppm iron is programmed as 35 gpg, which the water softener size calculator applies. No document here prints a manganese rating, so manganese above EPA’s 0.05 mg/L secondary standard is an iron-filter question, covered on the manganese black stains page.

AFWFilters Iron Pro 2 64K: buy it or skip it?
Buy it if the report shows hardness and clear-water iron together and the household wants a seller that prints an iron number. AFW’s page states fine mesh resin for iron removal up to 6 ppm, 64,000 grains, 2 cu ft of upgraded 10% crosslink resin, a 12 in main tank, a Fleck 5600SXT digital metered valve, 10 gpm service flow with 15 gpm peak, and a 5-year control head and 10-year mineral tank warranty.
The 6 ppm figure is a seller statement, not certifier test data: the page cites a WQA-certified specialist’s installation guide and no NSF/ANSI 44 or WQA product certification. AFW says a pre-filter is not required but can help; the Fleck 5600SXT settings guide covers programming the valve.
Skip it if iron is over 5 ppm, where every maker here points at an iron filter first, or if the house is small: a 2 cu ft bed takes more salt per cycle than a 1.5 cu ft one.
Aquasure Harmony fine mesh: buy it or skip it?
Buy it if iron sits in the 1 to 5 ppm band and the house has 3 to 4 bathrooms. Aquasure’s AS-HS48FM page says the pre-filled fine mesh resin is designed to remove up to 10 ppm of iron commonly found in well water, on city, municipal or well water. The Harmony manual gives the Aquatrol digital metered head, 25 to 125 psi inlet pressure, a 2 ppm chlorine ceiling for the resin, and a parts-only warranty of one year, or five years if registered within 60 days.
Two caveats. Amazon titles this listing 50,000 grains; Aquasure’s catalogue lists fine mesh Harmony units at 32,000, 48,000, 64,000 and 72,000, so the 10 ppm statement comes from the closest maker model, the AS-HS48FM, not the listing. And the warranty excludes resin and valve parts where iron, manganese or chlorine exceed specified operational limits, while the manual prints a limit only for chlorine.

DuraWater Iron Blaster 48K: buy it or skip it?
Buy it if the household wants fine mesh resin on a Fleck 5600 SXT valve at the 1.5 cu ft size. DuraWater’s page lists 1.5 cu ft of upgraded fine mesh resin for iron removal, a 10 x 54 in tank, a 14 x 14 x 34 in brine tank for about 250 lb of salt, a Fleck 5600 SXT metered valve and a 1 in Noryl bypass.
Skip it if you need a number: the page prints no iron ppm, service flow, crosslink, warranty or certification. The only iron guidance behind it is Pentair’s 5600SXT manual: a separate iron filter goes ahead of the softener if piping is clogged with iron, and iron in conditioned water means a fouled bed, where a resin cleaner comes in.
Hardness-only picks, AFW 48K, Aquasure 64K and 32K: buy them or skip them?
Buy one of these if iron is already filtered, or sits under EPA’s 0.3 mg/L secondary standard, and hardness alone sets the size. None of the three prints an iron figure.
The AFWFilters 48K uses 1.5 cu ft of 8% crosslink resin (BR8) in a 10 x 54 in tank, a Fleck 5600SXT metered valve, a 250 lb brine tank, and a 5-year valve and 10-year tank warranty. AFW states 12 gpm service and 28 gpm peak; Pentair rates its own 1.5 cu ft 5600SXT system at 10.8 gpm, so plan on the valve maker’s figure.
The Aquasure Harmony AS-HS64D is the large-household size: the manual puts 53,000 to 72,000 grain units in a 12 x 52 in tank with a 12-minute brine fill. The AS-HS32D is the smallest buy here, 8 x 44 in tank, 8-minute brine fill, listed on Amazon for 1 to 2 bathrooms. Both share the Aquatrol metered head, the 2 ppm chlorine limit and the parts-only warranty; neither prints resin volume, flow or NSF/ANSI 44 status.
The 64,000-grain listing was out of stock on 2026-10-11, so it has no button here.

Before you buy a softener for a well
Do not order any of these until the lab report gives hardness in gpg or mg/L (the hardness unit converter converts), clear-water iron in ppm, and manganese.
Iron under 5 ppm decides between the AFW Iron Pro 2 64K (printed 6 ppm ceiling) and the Aquasure fine mesh unit (maker’s 10 ppm wording). Iron over 5 ppm means the first tank is an iron filter, and the softener is sized for hardness alone on the water softener size calculator.
A hardness test strip is the only thing worth ordering before the report is back; the softener vs filter guide settles which tank it points at.
What about the Whirlpool WHES40 and GE GXSH40V?
They are the benchmark rows, sold through big-box stores, not Amazon. Ecodyne’s WHES40 manual rates 10 ppm clear-water iron and 125 gpg maximum hardness, and names NSF International as certifier against NSF/ANSI 44 for hardness reduction and efficiency. Spares are on the WHES30 and WHES40 parts page.
GE’s GXSH40V sheet rates 8 ppm iron, 110 gpg maximum hardness and 5,090 grains per pound of salt at the 2.3 lb dose, against Whirlpool’s 4,958 at 2.4 lb, and says the system conforms to NSF/ANSI 44 for its capacity claims: the maker’s statement, not a named certifier.
Both footnote their iron ratings the same way: substantiated by WQA test data, and the State of Wisconsin requires additional treatment above 5 ppm clear-water iron. That 5 ppm line is the ceiling this page uses for every unit.
What goes wrong?
The hardness setting ignores the iron. Whirlpool’s manual adds 5 grains per ppm of ferrous iron; a unit programmed for 20 gpg on water that should read 35 gpg regenerates on a capacity it no longer has.
The nominal grain rating is read as the working capacity. Whirlpool’s WHES40 drops from 40,000 grains to 11,900 at its minimum salt dose, and Pentair’s 1.5 cu ft bed from 53,100 to 17,900, so a unit sized on the label regenerates more often than planned.
A seller’s iron number is read as a certification. AFW’s 6 ppm and Aquasure’s 10 ppm are product-page statements; only Whirlpool and GE cite WQA test data. When a fine mesh bed fouls, Pentair’s fix is to check backwash, brine draw and brine fill and regenerate more often.

What does NSF/ANSI 44 certification actually cover on a softener?
NSF describes NSF/ANSI 44 as the minimum requirements for certifying residential water softeners that use a cation exchange resin regenerated with sodium or potassium chloride, which reduces hardness, and its scope includes softening capacity and rinse effectiveness. Of the units here, only the Whirlpool WHES40 manual names NSF International as certifier against the standard.
