Every figure on this page is the manufacturer’s published specification, read on 2026-09-12 from the Whirlpool WHES40 manual (7345469) and the GE GXSH40V specification sheet (49-50283). Nothing was bench-tested.

The units were compared on the specs that decide whether a softener survives a well: maximum clear-water iron in ppm, grain capacity at each salt dose, resin volume, regeneration type, NSF/ANSI 44 status and warranty.

Neither was found as a complete unit on Amazon this session, so there are no purchase links here. Both Whirlpool and GE sell through big-box stores.

The nominal grain figure is the capacity at the maximum salt dose. Both efficiency-rated units publish three tiers, and both state the efficiency rating is valid only at the minimum dose.

The iron ratings above are for clear-water iron only, water that leaves the tap clear and turns red on standing. Whirlpool’s manual is the only one of the two that says how to program for it: add 5 grains to the hardness setting per 1 ppm of ferrous iron, so 20 gpg with 3 ppm iron is programmed as 35 gpg. The water softener size calculator applies the same factor. Neither manual rates iron that is already red, and neither sheet prints a manganese rating, so manganese above EPA’s 0.05 mg/L secondary standard is an iron-filter question, not a softener question.

Whirlpool WHES40: buy it or skip it?

Buy it if the report shows hardness and clear-water iron together and the household wants a unit whose certification and iron figure both sit in the manual rather than on a marketing page. Ecodyne’s manual lists NSF/ANSI 44 certification for hardness reduction and efficiency, NSF/ANSI 372, WQA certification to CSA B483.1, and the 10 ppm iron rating on the same specification page.

The limits are also in the manual: 125 gpg maximum hardness, 20 to 125 psi, 8.5 gpm rated service flow, 200 lb of salt storage. The warranty page gives one year full parts and labor, three years on the electronic control board and ten years on the salt storage tank and fiberglass mineral tank.

Skip it if the house draws more than 8.5 gpm at once: GE rates the GXSH40V at 9.5 gpm. Skip it if salt efficiency is the deciding spec, because the WHES40’s 4,958 grains per pound at the 2.4 lb dose trails the GE by 132.

Alternative: the GE GXSH40V, which trades 2 ppm of iron rating for that efficiency and flow.

GE GXSH40V: buy it or skip it?

Buy it if iron is under 5 ppm and the household wants the lowest published salt use: GE’s sheet gives 5,090 grains per pound at the 2.3 lb dose, with a stated floor of not less than 4,000 grains per pound, and demand-initiated regeneration.

GE rates the GXSH40V at 9.5 gpm service flow with a 12.7 psig pressure drop at that flow, 110 gpg maximum hardness and 8 ppm clear-water iron. The same sheet publishes performance claims for barium (10 ±10% mg/L influent to a maximum 2.0 mg/L) and radium 226/228 (25 pCi/L to a maximum 5 pCi/L), which no other document read for this page prints.

Skip it if the iron result sits between 8 and 10 ppm, where only the Whirlpool is rated, and skip it if a printed warranty term matters to you: the specification sheet fetched for this page does not carry one, so ask the retailer for the warranty document before paying.

Before you buy a softener for a well

Do not order either unit until the lab report gives hardness in gpg or mg/L (Health Canada’s hardness guideline gives 1 gpg as 17.1 mg/L as CaCO3), clear-water iron in ppm, and manganese.

Iron under 5 ppm decides between the Whirlpool WHES40, rated 10 ppm and NSF/ANSI 44 certified, and the GE GXSH40V, rated 8 ppm at 5,090 grains per pound of salt. Iron over 5 ppm means the first tank is an iron filter, and the softener is sized for hardness alone on the water softener size calculator.

Neither unit is sold on amazon.com; both are dealer and big-box purchases. A hardness test strip is the only thing worth ordering before the lab report is back.

What goes wrong?

The hardness setting ignores the iron. Whirlpool’s manual adds 5 grains per ppm of ferrous iron; a unit programmed for 20 gpg on water that should read 35 gpg regenerates on a capacity it no longer has, and the iron stays in the resin between cycles.

The nominal grain rating is read as the working capacity. Both efficiency-rated units drop from 40,000 grains to under 12,000 at their minimum salt dose, valid only there. A unit sized on 40,000 and run at the efficient dose regenerates three to four times as often as expected.

Certification is assumed from a component. Whirlpool’s manual states NSF/ANSI 44 certification by NSF International; GE’s sheet states conformance for its capacity claims only, and NSF’s scope for the standard covers the whole unit, brine system and owner information included.

NSF says NSF/ANSI 44 sets minimum requirements for residential cation-exchange softeners regenerated with sodium or potassium chloride: hardness reduction, material safety, structural integrity, pressure drop, softening capacity, rinse effectiveness, brine system accuracy and the accuracy of the information given to the owner.

Why does a 40,000 grain softener deliver far fewer grains at its efficient salt setting?

Because the nominal figure is the capacity at the maximum salt dose. Whirlpool's WHES40 manual lists 40,000 grains at 15.5 lb of salt, 31,600 at 9.0 lb and 11,900 at 2.4 lb; GE's GXSH40V sheet lists 40,000 at 15.1 lb, 31,500 at 8.7 lb and 11,700 at 2.3 lb. Both makers state the efficiency rating is valid only at the minimum salt dose.
