How was this shortlist built?
Every figure on this page is the maker’s published specification, read from the product page named beside it on 2026-09-12, or an EPA or CDC guidance figure. No kit was run and no kit carries a rating from this site.
The kits were compared on the specs that decide whether a result is worth acting on: sample format (strip read at home, or sample mailed to a lab), parameter count, stated lab accreditation, turnaround in business days, and the three parameters strips cannot resolve: coliform as a count, lead at the action level, and PFAS. Prices are a band from the maker’s list price.
Two things frame every row. EPA’s National Primary Drinking Water Regulations bind public water systems, and EPA’s private-well FAQ says EPA does not regulate private wells: the owner is responsible for testing. That FAQ and CDC’s well testing page both recommend an annual test for total coliform bacteria, nitrate, total dissolved solids and pH at a certified laboratory.
A certified laboratory is one accredited under NELAP (the National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program, 15 states by SimpleLab’s count) or a state ELAP program. EPA does not accredit labs; states do.
How do the kits compare on paper?
Maker’s figures. “Not published” means the cited page prints no value, not that the kit has none.

One pH note. Varify’s own product page names pH among the 17 pads but publishes no measurement range or accuracy figure for it, so a well acidic enough for the blue-green stains guide has no published chart bottom to check against.
A strip trades a number for a color, and three parameters do not survive the trade.

Iron against EPA’s secondary standard of 0.3 mg/L and manganese against 0.05 mg/L are also numbers on a lab report and color steps on a strip, which is why the iron in well water guide and the manganese black stains guide ask for a lab figure before a filter is sized.
Tap Score Essential: buy it or skip it?
Buy it if the water comes from a private well and there is no certified report from the last twelve months. SimpleLab’s page lists 54 analytes, with E. coli and total coliform in the microbiology block, nitrate among the inorganics, and 29 metals and minerals: the four parameters EPA and CDC name for an annual test, plus the iron, manganese and hardness figures this site’s guides ask for.
SimpleLab publishes 5 business days at the lab and includes a cold shipping kit, because the bacteria sample has to arrive overnight. Its certification page states every lab in the network is accredited to ISO/IEC 17025, with NELAP or state ELAP certification.
Price band: SimpleLab lists the Essential just above $200, the Advanced tier (114 analytes) just under $400 and the Extended tier (142 analytes, 25 PFAS, 2 radiologicals) above $1,000.
Skip it if the question is PFAS: that is the Extended tier, at five times the cost. Skip it if the question is whether a filter still works; a strip answers that.
Alternative: the Safe Home Ultimate, if the water is municipal and the worry is the chemical list rather than bacteria.
Safe Home Ultimate: buy it or skip it?
Buy it if the water is city water and the reason for testing is a long chemical list: Safe Home’s page names 200 parameters, including a 78-compound VOC package, TTHMs, pesticides, herbicides and PAH, reported against federal MCLs within 7 to 10 business days of the sample reaching the lab.
The lab is Environmental Laboratories Inc. of Madison, Indiana, in business since 1983, which Safe Home describes as an EPA-certified laboratory audited by state and federal agencies. That is the maker’s wording: EPA does not accredit laboratories, so ask Safe Home which state certification the lab holds.
Skip it for a well where bacteria is the question. The 200-parameter lab list does not include coliform; Safe Home covers bacteria with a free do-it-yourself vial in the kit, a home test, not a certified one. A positive vial sends you to a certified lab, then to the shock chlorination guide.
Skip it if PFAS is the worry: PFAS is not among the categories Safe Home publishes for this kit.
Alternative: the Tap Score Essential, which puts coliform in the lab rather than in a vial.
Watersafe Drinking Water Test: buy it or skip it?
Buy it as the screen that decides whether to pay for a lab. Watersafe lists 10 parameters, including lead, bacteria, iron, copper, chlorine, nitrate, nitrite, pH and hardness, strip results in about 10 minutes, and a bacteria vial that turns in 6 hours at high counts and up to 24 to 48 hours at low counts or cool temperatures.
Watersafe rates the lead strip to 5 ppb and the bacteria vial to 1 bacteria/mL, and states the kit is made in the USA by Silver Lake Research Corporation. Those are the maker’s figures with no accreditation behind them.
Skip it if a number is needed. The lead result is a color band, not a concentration: it cannot tell 12 ppb from 9 ppb, the gap between today’s 15 ppb action level and the 10 ppb EPA sets for November 1, 2027. Skip it if you plan to act on a positive vial alone: EPA and CDC name a certified laboratory for coliform.
One caution on the model number. Watersafe’s site sells this kit as the Drinking Water Test and does not print WS425B; older retailers list WS425B as a 9-in-1 kit with a pesticide strip. Check the box contents on the listing you open.
Alternative: the Varify 17-in-1 , for weekly tracking rather than a one-time screen.
Varify 17-in-1: buy it or skip it?
Buy it if you run a softener or a whole-house filter and check hardness, chlorine or pH every week. Varify’s page lists 17 pads, including pH, lead, fluoride, hardness, chlorine, iron, copper and alkalinity, on 100 strips with two bacteria vials.
One hundred strips is the spec that matters: at one a week it is two years of watching the hardness pad for a softener that stopped regenerating, the check the hard water white scale guide asks for.
Skip it as a first test of a well. Varify publishes no detection level for the lead pad, no sensitivity for the bacteria vials, no measurement range for the pH pad, and no accreditation. Skip it if the result has to satisfy anyone but you.
Alternative: the Watersafe kit, which at least publishes a 5 ppb figure for its lead strip.
Before you buy a test kit
Do not buy a strip kit to answer a well question, and do not buy a lab kit to answer a maintenance question.
Private well, no certified report in the last year: mail a sample. The Tap Score Essential puts total coliform, nitrate, TDS and pH, the four EPA and CDC name for an annual test, in an accredited lab with 54 analytes for just over $200 at list.
Softener or filter already installed, and the question is whether it still works: the Watersafe or Varify strips read hardness and chlorine in ten minutes.
A positive vial, a lead band, or a stain the strip cannot explain is the lab’s job, and the well water test panel guide lists which parameters to order.
What goes wrong?
The bacteria sample arrives warm or late. Tap Score ships a cold kit and asks for overnight delivery; a coliform sample that sits over a weekend is a result nobody can defend.
The turnaround is counted from the wrong day. Both makers count business days from the day the lab receives the sample, 5 for Tap Score and 7 to 10 for Safe Home, excluding shipping, weekends and holidays.
The strip is read as a number. A Watersafe lead strip rated to 5 ppb says lead is detectable, not whether the tap is at 9 ppb or 20 ppb, and the Lead and Copper Rule’s action level is a concentration: 15 ppb today, 10 ppb from November 1, 2027.
The kit does not cover the parameter. No strip reads PFAS, the Safe Home Ultimate does not put coliform in the lab, and the Tap Score Essential omits PFAS and radiologicals. Match the parameter to the kit before it ships.
The wrong problem gets tested. A rotten egg smell is hydrogen sulfide, on none of the four base panels, and belongs on the rotten egg smell guide instead.
Frequently asked questions
Can a test strip detect coliform bacteria in well water?
Not a strip, and not as a count. The Watersafe and Varify kits ship a separate vial that changes color when bacteria grow in it; Watersafe rates its vial at 1 bacteria per mL with a result in 6 to 48 hours. The vial answers present or absent. EPA and CDC both name a certified laboratory for total coliform, so a positive vial is the reason to mail a sample.
Do the EPA drinking water limits apply to a private well?
No. EPA's National Primary Drinking Water Regulations bind public water systems. EPA's private-well FAQ states that it does not regulate private wells and that the owner is responsible for testing. The MCLs and secondary standards are still the reference every lab report is judged against, and EPA and CDC recommend annual testing for total coliform, nitrate, total dissolved solids and pH.
How accurate is a home lead test strip against the EPA action level?
The strip reports a color band, not a concentration. Watersafe states its lead strip detects at 5 ppb, below the EPA action level of 15 ppb under the Lead and Copper Rule. Varify publishes no detection level for its lead pad. Only a certified lab reports a number in ppb, and the action level drops to 10 ppb on November 1, 2027, which narrows what a strip can resolve.
How long does a mail-in water test take?
Count from the day the lab receives the sample, not the day the kit ships. SimpleLab publishes 5 business days at the lab for the Tap Score Essential, and Safe Home publishes 7 to 10 business days for the Ultimate kit, both excluding shipping, weekends and holidays. Bacteria samples need overnight shipping, which is why Tap Score includes a cold shipping kit.
Which test kit reads PFAS?
None of the four on this page in their base tier, and no strip reads PFAS. SimpleLab's Extended Well Water Test, the top tier above the Essential, lists 25 PFAS compounds among its 142 analytes at a list price above $1,000. Safe Home does not name PFAS among the categories it publishes for the Ultimate kit. A PFAS result comes from a lab kit that names PFAS by count.
